Check out Ben's Vibrato Odyssey series : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/lessonseries/Bens-Vibrato-Odyssey/
It is very good for developing vibrato.

Again, you are too kind.. the bribe money is in the post guys wink.gif

Joking aside, I hope those lessons help you, ygro. If you need any help with them, feel free to get in touch with me anytime. I'm not sure where you are in the world but I do live video chats every Tuesday evening starting from 7pm GMT. I cover different subjects every week. I've talked about vibrato in the past but I would be happy to do another special chat on vibrato again.. smile.gif

Hey, don't worry about that.. those levels are just guidelines based on the level that we imagine that you would be in order to master them or play them 100%.. however, it doesn't mean that you can't learn them at any level. Vibrato is a fundamental technique that people need to learn early on when they start playing lead guitar so it is good that you're looking at it now ! smile.gif

Hmmmm... I recently started fretting lighter than ever before. What is the secret to achieving a good bend, and or bend style vibrato for this? I currently vibrato like a violinist/cellist would. Any suggestions? I literally use just enough strength for my string to make contact with the fret wire and ring out nowadays. I am always trying to perfect my techniques, you know?

I also recommend a light touch as a great way to train technique and make your fretting hand movements more efficient. For vibrato and bending, however, nothing replaceses good, old fashioned pressure.

When you say you perform vibrato like a cellist, does that mean you use an unnacompanied finger ?

I do a variation on that which I call classical vibrato, where I use my other fingers to sit on the string and push up next to the finger that is fretting the note, thus providing more strength. The vibrato motion itself comes all the way back from the elbow, through the forearm and the wrist.

For other types of vibrato, the regular 'up, down' and the more exotic 'circular' vibrato like Steve Vai does.. the hand angle changes but the principle is pretty much the same: The finger is the contact point with the string, a contact point that needs to remain strong.. but the actual vibrato motion itself is performed by rotating the wrist and keeping a strong, united line from the forearm through the hand. I hope that makes sense ? smile.gif

I learned to vibrato in a horizontal fashion rather than a vertical one(Fun Fact: I taught myself a little bit of Violin. I haven't played in a couple years, and I would love too, but i am concentrating on guitar too much).

Check out the way Elena is (vibratoing?) in the beginning.

Yeah, that's the image I have in my head of violin vibrato. If you're able to make it effective on guitar then I'm impressed as I usually encourage people to avoid performing vibrato with just the finger on its own smile.gif

Thanks! I actually developed it for the song "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles. I can play the vocal line on my guitar, and I felt that amore expressive vibrato was needed; so I developed a violin vibrato on my guitar. It has its uses, just like the other vibrato styles, it is just the one that I currently prefer.
