The final mix and comments are now here.
I must thank Pedja for providing all the comments on this collaboration, he has worked very hard on them the last couple of days!  Personally this has been a real treat to have you all play over my backing I must thank Kris for allowing me to put this one up for the Instructors and a huge "thank you" to you all for taking part, each and every take was great and in each I had favourite part. thank you I hope you all like the mix, enjoy!

Before I get to comments I would just like to say you guys did really great job and made my commenting much more difficult than usually I could hardly find any flaws in your playing and most comments are matter of personal taste to some extent, although there are spots that I commented on structure and melodic approach as well. Without further ado I present you final comments and in the meanwhile enjoy final mix as you read them! Pedja Emir (0:00 – 0:57) Sound – I really like your sound Emir. Fits your aggressive style of playing very much and has that extra treble boosted to make notes scream with distortion. Intro – Very well played intro. Usually I prefer solos to build up start slow and peak later , but your playing style is different and aggressive so you got your point across in the opening which was great. Excellent pentatonic sequence by the way that followed opening bend! Phrasing/time feel/rhythm – For your style of melodic choices, phrasing was very well placed trough out the whole solo. Time feel change was also there but it seemed more like 8th note was your primary pulse rather than quarter so your double time was 16th note phrases and faster triplets with broken phrases. Development/melodic shapes – I am thrilled how you used repetition and motive development in some segments of your solo. That was very well placed, not too repetitive and as soon as I got idea you were doing something you moved to another new idea which sounded fresh and new. Melodic shapes were mix of a lot of different things (scale sequences , arpeggio , motive development) and for this style of music was perfectly placed. Technique – Flawless, alternate economy legato sweep, even open string licks – great stuff man. Outro/ending – This is perhaps only part that I found to be contrasting from your whole solo. Ending sounded weak to me for couple of reasons. One of them is that speeding up you did was not 100% placed in time so it made it drop. I am assuming you wanted to create climax in the ending just like you created one in the intro, but ending didn't work really well with that particular idea you tried to get trough. I would advise to do a sequenced run that leads into that final bend, as that is much more expected and heard in style we are covering. Overall this was great solo. Technically it was 99% executed perfectly. I had problem with ending and one little legato passage(0:27) that was repeated. Since I heard your style of playing and solos I will not comment what I would advise most people. In general this solo lacks space and resting but you really shredded trough the whole solo with repetition, sequence and development so that exchanged lack of rests in solo. Well done Emir and hope you don't hate me now haha ! Muris (0:58 -1:44) Sound – Really blends well with the backing track, great job Muris ! Intro – Wonderful intro, I loved it Muris. You had question and answer type phrases and you used syncopated rhythm. I really like how you established regular time feel in the intro before doing double time later on in the solo. Excellent man Phrasing/time feel/rhythm – Phrasing flawless, time feel was there trough out the whole solo and rhythm choice was great. Its your style Muris what else can I add to it… Development/melodic shapes – This was your strongest point in this solo. We all know you are monster technical player, and most of the times technical players seem to forget about melody, repetition, sequence, motive development etc. In this solo you showed (in my opinion) much more mature playing then I have heard in lessons (which are all amazing by the way). Your Guitar Idol entry I have to connect with this as in both of solos you displaced great sense of repetition (melodic and rhythmic), motive development, sequence and things that can hook anybody to listen to your playing. I am referring to somebody who has very well musical trained ear all the way to people who have no musical background whatsoever. I am really thrilled with this part of your solo, it was truly refreshing to hear that kind of approach from you Muris, excellent work. Technique – Legato, economy, open string licks, slide outs, tremolo licks – just awesome Muris. Outro/ending –Awesome ending ! I love how you didn't end your phrase on ROOT but rather on minor 7th. That sounded really strong as you played long rhythm and it was perfect not to set up anybody who was doing next solo! Overall Muris I have just words of praise for this solo really. Development , repetition, motive , sequence those things really made huge difference in this solo. Everything you played you delivered strongly with things mentioned and I am very happy to hear you play like this I must say I wish you all the best with Guitar Idol as I want you to win with song that has all elements I mentioned above in it. Great stuff man, thanks. Marcus (1:45 – 2:37) Sound – Fits backing well and great work with EQ's on this one. Great job Marcus. Intro – Really well done intro Marcus! Question and answer type phrasing was applied there. I really think students can definitely benefit from this long vs short rhythm question and answer phrase. Great job Marcus. Phrasing/time feel/rhythm – I feel this was your strongest point in this solo Marcus. I must say I have your couple of other solos before and your phrasing really sticks out and I can recognize your playing very easy. Excellent work man. Development/melodic shapes – Some excellent ideas in development section. Your melodic shapes were great mixture of high and low register melodies corresponding each other. I really liked AC DC style open string lick at 2:27! That was refreshing and added extra strength to whole solo! Technique –Legato as well as economy were primary source in this solo. I really enjoyed your long bends as they were very well balancing whole solo and creating communication between faster and slower melodies! Outro/ending – Couple of things on ending; I think it works as it is but perhaps some slower rhythm values would have made it even stronger. I also think it sounded weaker because of Piotr's entrance to the solo. I am sure if anybody else's take started after yours, ending would sound much stronger, but this was no fault of yours Overall this was really great melodic solo. I am digging your phrasing ideas Marcus and as I said you are one of the guys that after hearing couple of bars I can say that's you out there doing your thing. I think that's extremely important as you have signature rhythms that follow your playing. You have also very strong sense of melody and most importantly you are very creative guy. I hear you doing idea , repeating that lick 3,4 times and then moving onto another one. In other words you control tension and release really well in this solo whether that is technique or melody approach. I look forward to more of your solos Marcus, thanks man Piotr (2:38 – 3:30) Sound – Cristal clear and crisp distortion, awesome Piotr. Intro – Loved tremolo dived bombs, absolutely unexpected and worked perfectly! One of the best intros I've heard at GMC possibly Phrasing/time feel/rhythm – Very strong phrasing and rhythm choice. Time feel was not as obvious but you compensated that with strong melodic ideas which were great. Development/melodic shapes – Your melodic shapes were possibly the best in this whole collaboration. I have to emphasize your octave skips as refreshing trick that I rarely hear at GMC (Muris likes and uses that as well in his solos). Development was strong but not perfect. It sounded like this was improvised and at times I had a feeling you were putting licks in between your solo. Don't get me wrong, your lick playing is incredible, your sound and attitude make everything sound strong, but development I felt could have happened more here (repetition, motive development etc). Technique – Stunning technique and flawless really. I have to emphasize use of Tremolo bar which you really pulled out great ! Outro/ending – I like this ending! It reminds of Satriani as this pinched harmonic with whammy is his signature in 90% of the solos he does. Excellent work Piotr ! Overall Piotr this solo was full of useful licks and melodic shapes. I think if I had to put a label to your solo I would have to say its between Satriani and Vai sounding type lines and techniques. I am thrilled with your technique, especially your Whammy bar skills, and perhaps you could do some Whammy lessons in future – I know I would practice them for sure If I had to pick a bad spot in your solo, I would have to go with time feel that was not obvious (rhythm you used was along same values most of the times) and development in the solo. I take into consideration that this was improvised solo so that makes things I mentioned even harder to control and do well. I think you did great job with everything else and personally I want to hear more from you Satriani and Vai type lessons man. Thanks a lot Piotr Rousseau (3:31 – 4:18) Sound – It works over backing well. I think it's a bit in the background compared to all the other sounds used in the mix but that is not necessarily bad thing Intro – Excellent intro! I like how you took a riff, repeated it numerous times and created different endings. Excellent work man! Phrasing/time feel/rhythm – Phrasing was strong and consistent but I liked even more balance of rhythms you had hence time feel change was very obvious trough the solo. Great work! Development/melodic shapes – I feel this was strongest part of your solo! You had lots of repetition, different endings and development was spontaneous trough out the whole solo. Melodic shapes were good and I have to point out Octave runs with open string licks giving extra strength to whole solo. Technique – Nothing spectacular in technique section, but your approach solo didn't really require anything crazy to be honest. However, in this style that backing provides, it would have been nice to hear some sweep picking or tapping at some points, as they are both characteristic for style we are covering. Outro/ending – I feel this was the weakest part of your solo for couple of reasons. One of them is you overplayed the ending and could have ended sooner with longer bend or slide into strong chord tone for example. Another reason is your scale choice. Trough out the solo you established E Aeolian sound and in the ending you tried doing E Dorian which didn't work because of rhythm choice you made. For future reference I advise when changing modes from same root (modal interchange) to set it up a bit more in advance so that listener can have at least couple of seconds to get used to the sound of new mode. Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly fine with you using E Dorian in the very end and taught that was great initiative. Check out how Marcus used Gypsy Minor and/or Dorian #4 mode in his Development of the solo. The rhythm he choose along with melodies was perfect so it made everything sound really strong! Overall Rousseau I really liked your intro and development in this solo a lot! What I think could have been approached better was ending and usage of a bit more in style techniques (tapping, sweep picking arpeggios). Other than that, solo is very melodic and rhythm choice along with time feel in it is great. Great work Rousseau, I look forward to more of your solos man! Zsolt (4:19 – 5:10) Sound – Excellent sound, comes over top with all notes ringing out. Perfect for pinched harmonics and other techniques which you delivered trough the solo. Excellent work Zsolt ! Intro – Solid intro with question and answer type phrasing used. Good job Zsolt! Phrasing/time feel/rhythm – Very interesting approach with phrasing. Your 1st and 3rd section of the solo (verses if I may label them as that) had almost exact type of phrasing ideas. The good thing about this is you established your soloing sound and phrasing. Another good thing was you used Regular time feel in these sections, so when B section (chorus) came to play, you did double time playing and it added great contrast to the whole solo! I think you did a very good job (especially in the B section of the solo) and A section could have used a bit more rhythm variety or starting on different beat when soloing. Great work Zsolt! Development/melodic shapes – Development was there trough out the tune for reasons I mentioned above. Your rhythm was very specific and repeated trough out 1st and 3rd section so that made everything you played more stronger and glued together all your ideas. Melodic shapes were also well used and placed especially in B section where you applied variety of different techniques. I must emphasize Satriani type pinched harmonic in 1st section – reminds me a lot of Back to Shalla Bal melody with pinched harmonics at the end! Excellent work man Technique – This has to be no doubt your strongest point in whole solo! I am very impressed how you took alternate picking (unlike anybody else) and delivered it perfectly in B section. That sounded a bit like Greg Howe or Paul Gilbert type of approach which I really enjoyed hearing. You didn't stop there as you had some awesome arpeggios and sequences that had usage of whammy bar as slide down effect. I really liked that and would like to see some lessons from you on this type of licks (personal preference Also trough out the solo you displayed great feel for pinched harmonics and I felt they were greatly placed trough the solo. From all the instructors I hear this from you, Muris and Piotr the most in your playing and I must state that this is very characteristic sound that Vai and Satriani took further and developed in Instrumental music later on. Excellent work Zsolt.Outro/ending –Very nice ending as it sets up next soloist strongly. The fast rhythm you used with your bends on Root worked really well. Overall Zsolt I liked a lot of the things in your solo. Sound was excellent with backing, development and melodic shapes were really strong, your time feel control was really well placed and your technique trough the solo was just mind blowing. I feel intro could have been stronger and your phrasing could have included a bit more variety in 1st and 3rd section (A sections). I am glad you submitted your take man and I hope we will all see some lessons on pinched harmonics, alternate and whammy bar licks soon Sergio (5:11 – 6:01) Sound – It sounds like there is a touch more distortion then needed. Even with that being said, I still think it fits backing Good work Sergio!Intro – Excellent approach in intro! I love how you played 4 notes over 2 bars. That was really strong melodic idea that you took and did motive development type response from it. Excellent work Sergio. Phrasing/time feel/rhythm – 99% very strong phrasing but there were couple of dropped notes around 5:18 time frame with legato section. Time feel was evident trough out the solo as well as good balance of rhythms. Good job Sergio! Development/melodic shapes – I feel this was your strongest point in the whole solo. The way you developed was typical example of how to work single and simple melodic ideas. You created different endings extended the ideas and it never became too predictable as you were changing ideas right on time. Great work with development and strong melodic shapes Sergio. Technique –Great mixture of techniques combined in your B section of the solo! Legato, tapping and alternate picking were your strongest point but I have to emphasize that your phrasing in B section totally blew me away with combination of techniques and melodies you used. Excellent work Sergio. Outro/ending – I feel this could have been done better but I also think it fits whole solo for one reason. Your approach to whole solo was to start slow, use repetition and extend your ideas and build it up slowly until you reach climax. In this case, you postponed climax at the very end which worked well with your approach. I just feel with different phrasing (not by using constant rhythm) ending would have been even more stronger. Great work man. Sergio I must say it was very hard for me to write comments for you. I have heard your playing in totally different style for lessons and now you deliver this solo, seriously it was a lot of work man I think overall your solo was very strong as you used a lot of repetition, motive development and different endings, but also your B section of the solo was trough composed and had some great sequences and unexpected runs there. I am very pleased with what you delivered and I hope you will join us in future collaborations man. Thanks Sergio!Ivan (6:02 – 6:56) Sound – Excellent sound, fits backing really well. Excellent work Ivan. Intro – Question and answer type phrasing applied in melody with strong rhythm choice. I like it, great work man. Phrasing/time feel/rhythm – Phrasing was spot on trough whole solo. I felt you time feel change could have been more obvious at some points as you had a lot of fast long passages in your solos. That tends to set up in listeners ears 8th note as regular feel rather than quarter note. Rhythm was well placed; there was strong combination of downbeat and upbeat rhythms. You approached solo just like Zsolt did – 1st and 3rd section regular time feel, 2nd section double time feel. Great work Ivan. Development/melodic shapes –This was one of the strongest points in your solo along with technique (if not the strongest point) in your solo. Even though you were doing a lot of double time soloing, your lines sounded very well connected together. There was great balance of high and low register of melodies, and each one of them corresponded really well to the next one. Melodic shapes were mostly linear and scale runs, but in the 3rd section of the solo you used some nice motive development with interesting interval skips that made it sound like Eric Johnson! I like it man, you really did well in that section. Technique – Legato was strongest technique in your whole solo and was predominant trough out double time. You also had some nice bending ideas in your solo which took double time away and returned to regular time feel , which I felt was well done and placed. Great job man. Outro/ending – I like your ending very much. You gradually slowed down your rhythms and had perfect climax of the solo with the bend to Root as highest note in the solo. Well done man. Overall Ivan I think this was one of your best solos that I heard from you at GMC. You had great sound, excellent double time legato licks in B section, and 1st and 3rd A sections had some really nice development ideas. Ending was very well executed and whole solo had lots of positive things in it. Only thing I might mention is to try to work regular vs double time feel more into whole solo, not to just assign section to each. Great solo and effort Ivan as this is not your style of music, but I think you did great job regardless of that man I would like to thank Smells (chris) and Kristofer for giving me opportunity to write out comments for all of you guys. It was extremely challenging task for me as you all are accomplished and developed players, and it was very hard to find "flaws" in your playing when writing comments. I could have wrote all the comments with wow, great, amazing and finish it all there, but I felt regardless of everybody's style and approach of playing, you all had different things to work on. Thank you Pedja. Yes it's true, a couple of licks could have been executed better but now it's too late hahah. I agree 100% with your comment. I should have started slower and then build up but again, too late
Great takes by everyone, well done. The only thing I noticed is that the whole mix is too much in treble. More bass would be nice but still works as it is

I have to admit that Piotr's intro makes my outro look bad  Next time I will hand in my take after everybody else  As always it was a lot of fun, let's do another one now
