New Guitar Or Upgrade?

Hi!

I'm using a cheap guitar (A beginner guitar, Fender Squier Bullet something) for around 100EUR but it came to my attention i might need a better one, this is a just a wild guess though. For that matter, do i need a better one for exercising?

So, here's the choices:

1. Buy a new one for ~300EUR (can't afford more)

2. Replace my pickups with http://www.thomann.de/gb/emg_set_sasa85_black.htm

I don't have THAT much of knowledge of guitar parts and how much difference it'll make so throw me a bone here smile.gif.

(Note: I'm using Toneport UX2)

And a question to Kristoffer Dahl (unless someone else know and is able to answer, that is most appreciated): What amp/effect is used in the section "Beginner Guitar > Power Chords for beginners". It's easier to exercise if i use the same, don't ask why i do.

(Though if i don't have the same amp/effect in my TonePort, could you recommend another one similar in the library of tones?)

Thank You!

IMHO, I would say upgrade the whole thing. Just upgrading pickups won't help you much. Cheap guitars not only use cheap pick ups..but cheap hardware and cheap wood. You'll see a greater gain if you buy a new one.

Well what I did at first was played my fender stratocaster for a while, then I had gotten a little better and decided for an upgrade. It was an alright upgrade and it produced a better sound, but just a few weeks ago I decided i'd gotten tired of my strat and wanted to move onto something better and higher quality,so... I bought a Schecter FR C-1 Hellraiser. I tell you what I think this is the best thing i've ever done for myself - buying equipment-wise. Icedern is right, guitars that are cheaper will oviously have less expensive equipment on them: wood, pickups, bridge, nut, etc.. What I would do is find what style fits you best first before you make any major upgrades because different styles have certain pick-ups you would want to get, or some pick-ups are good for a variety of styles. Example: my guitar's pick-ups are EMG 81/85, I think these pick-ups are best for a style that is more metal.

First off The squire Bullet series is the cheapest model guitar they build ,well they make a mini one thats even cheaper.I dont know what kind of wood the body is made of on the guitar but as far as the pickups, YES you should change them out if your going to keep the guitar. It really is all about how much you were going to spend to decide wether to buy a new one or upgrade. If you got the cash to blow by another one and keep the one you have as well.If your on a tight budget try to just start replacing parts one at a time on the Bullet.Ebay and guitarfedish.com have some good deals on parts.BTW there are many other guitars out there cheaper than this. This guitar is one of the best made for price range.I would also ask Marcus Lavandell on here about it because he seems to know alot about stripping down cheap guitars and making them sweet biggrin.gif

You can't go wrong with Schecter biggrin.gif.. i would upgrade the whole thing, once uve got a better wood and better parts its much easier to upgrade that for a much bigger return than if you were to just upgrade 1 part on a entry level guitars. On the same topic, ive got my new Schecter C-1 exotic star with the stock schecter pickups, does anyone know if these will need replaceing or are the stock okay.. they sound okay for now but ive never tried any others so i don't know smile.gif

I'm aiming at playing Metal, so a Shecter C-1 is recommended?

But i don't find it at thomann.de and i mainly buy my equipment from there. Is there any other good guitars from thomann that could fit me? I looked at bit and found this: http://www.thomann.de/thoiw5_schecter_omen...h_prodinfo.html

And http://www.thomann.de/gb/bc_rich_se_warlock_afterburner.htm (Alright, i primary went for the design but is any of the specs good?)

It would be remiss of us not to point out the Ibanez RG350 as an excellent metal/shred guitar in the lower rice ranges omething of a classic really. There is a review of it here.

Although Schecter guitars are very well thought of too.

I bought a Warlock myself, Ohem and I replaced it with an Ibanez RG350DX in less than a month.

I would highly recommend the Ibanez to you as an amazing guitar for around $500CDN (no idea what that is in EU). Ibanez guitars are great for wanting to building speed. I love mine!

Oh... I guess if it hasn't come out yet, I would recommend buying a new guitar as well.

I have tried Schecter and Ibanez and I prefer the feel of the Ibanez guitars. Schecter has a much thicker and rounder neck which, for me, was unpleasant for speed.

Ibanez RG350 and 370 seems a bit expensive, but if it's THAT good i'll be saving up for it.

Thanks for your replies!

Have a look at Jackson too, they have descent low price entry guitars. Or Yamaha. But the big question is wther it's going to be a huge step up with only 300 Euro.
Perhaps you could do a better deal buying something used from eBay?

Hi Ohem,
I'd agree with MickeM largely - seriously consider getting a used guitar as the upgrade rather than a new one. You should be able to get a good 2nd hand one for 300euros. Only note of caution I'd have though is that you might want to try it first (or get a friend who knows to do it for you) just to make sure the hardware and setup are A1.

Cheers,
Tony
