GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ I Need To Vent

Posted by: bart m Sep 5 2007, 05:30 AM

just a mere three weeks ago, i was offered a "position" in a "house" band playing rhythm/lead guitar and singing backup vocals twice a week at a local restaurant/bar. we played mostly covers...classic rock, classic soul, funk, blues...etc. before that i hadn't played a regular gig in 6 years. well, i just got a call from the band leader saying we had the plug pulled on us...the reason, it's football season. mad.gif i'm really bummed right now. this gig was pefect. i played 2 hours friday night, 2 hours saturday night and i was home in time to get some hang time with my family, plus the extra cash was nice, not to mention the best part...i was playing and singing again. the venue had a real nice atmosphere. it wasn't a big party scene and the crowd was always attentive...i guess i can make my regular poker game again...

Man, sorry to hear that especially since you got such a good thing going. Hope football night renders low beer sales and they want the rock band back cool.gif

obviously not anymore...it's a bull**** excuse, clearly. the gig was only from 7:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m friday and saturday night followed by a comedy act from 10:00 to 11:00...this place is not a sportsbar, so i know the excuse was b.s. my paranoia is telling me that when i was added to the lineup, the owner was out a little more money and this is what lead to his decision. i really hope not because the other guys really need the $$$$ as much or more than i do. for example, the keyboard player is this old guy with killer chops who has lead one of those not so glamorous rock n roll lifestyles fraught with substance abuse and mental issues who is trying to get back on top of his game...it just sux!!

I really hope you won't stop by the bar to see another band play. Guess you're right, football season was a lame excuse. And don't take the blame, obviously you added to the performance and somewhere there's a line beween delivering a good perfomance and selling out. Though I understand from your explanation they needed the cash.

there is no reason for anyone to treat people like that. they should be up-front and honest with you. it sounded like a perfect gig too and maybe something could have been worked out. there's probably some other opportunities out there for you though. keep looking around.

something will come up, i'm positive of that. it's been a long road to getting another gig and it's far from over with this current band(my wife's ex husband was a musician, one of the reason's they split...now he and his wife and me and my wife are all really good friends because we wanted to do the right thing for the kids...and he was the one that got me the gig..he's the bass player...haha) i believe new and better doors will open, and now i will have a few more hours during the week to practice. but for those that know how great is to play live with people you connect with, you know it's tough when it stops. i'll live and i'm actually over it now that i've posted it and got it "out there." i'm going to try and not even be mad at the owner...too much bad energy for my blessed life.
thanks for the support...
peace

I agree. College Basketball season, I could understand. Just kidding, you're in Mississippi right, SEC football is pretty big down there I am sure, people like to watch the games I suspect in the bars, and it costs them nothing extra.

edit: when in doubt, pass on the paranoia theory. bar owner is just trying to make a living, he knows people will want to watch Ole Miss, or whoever, and it costs them nothing, he changed his mind. A lot of college games come on at that time, don't take it personal.
