Hey guys, so I'm thinking of buying a new guitar, and I've narrowed it down to two choices: The Ibanez S series Prestige http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...itar?sku=518112 or the JS2400 http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...itar?sku=584125 I play shred and metal, but I also am playing jazz in school so I want it to be versatile. What do you guys recommend? Thanks.

Definitely not the Joe Satriani one, quality wise it is no better than the S5470 - you are just paying for the name and some gimmicks.
Get the S5740, which is made from mahagony (warmer sound) and upgrade it with some good pickups if you don't like the stock ones...

I agree with Zakk, for you S5740 seems like a logical choice.

Thanks for the help. I played both, and the JS feels a little better because the neck is a little thicker and the body isn't super thin, just feels more natural. Is there a big difference quality wise between the two? And does the mahogany vs basswood really make a huge difference?

The body Wood make THE MAJOR diffrence in guitars! More than pickups or neckwoods or shape!
It's not that basswood is a lower quality or cheaper wood, it just sounds totally diffrent to mahagony...

The JS and the S are on par quality wise, the JS is just too expensive for what it offers (paying for Mr. Satrianis name).
There are a lot of other superstrats out there, you don't have to settle for one of those two. You could try a jackson or ESP and even an Ibanez RG or RGA!

I own an ESP, and I played the RG Prestige models and I didn't like them that much. I've never played a Jackson though, the store I am buying from doesn't carry them. How do they compare? And I didn't know that about the wood, thanks. If mahogany gives a warmer sound what does basswood give?

Basswood is very neutral, a pretty much flat eq curve... It tends to sound bright but that comes mostly from it being a very light wood that doesn't pack much low end. Think of an 80's hairmetal sound and you know what to expect from Basswood.
I would choose mahagony for such a thin bodied, floyd rose guitar as it gives you more sustain and a less sharp top end...

Try the RGA! It is very diffrent from a standard RG; it has a mahagony body with a maple top just like a les Paul. I can't tell you how those guitars compare though, you have to go and try them out - at diffrent stores if one doesn't carry all of them!

OK, the RGA looks pretty awesome. How does it sound clean though, would it be usable for jazz? I mainly play metal, but whatever guitar I end up getting has to at least be passable in a jazz band.

I don't think RGs fit for Jazz.. although you can actually use any guitar you want.. If that is the only choice, I would go for S Prestige.

I don't know how it fits, but this guitar might be of interest too.. some great shredders and jazzers use them.

You can play any genre with any guitar if it has the right pickups and a suitable amp. The stock pickups in the RGA are active and more aimed at Rock & Metal but they should do some Jazz tones - and if not you can always change to a more *allround* set of pickups!

Alright dude, thanks a lot. I actually went to the store today and spent all day playing every guitar they had, and finally decided on a PRS Custom 24, 25 Anniversary Edition. I know it's totally different from what I was looking at before but I fell in love with it (and my parents decided to pay a little extra for it... tongue.gif) I'll put up some pictures when I get it in a few days, they're setting it up for me.

Very nice guitar! I didn't suggest any PRS guitars since they are a little out of the price league but if you managed to get one - good for you!
