I Need Help With My Sound Please

I have a solid state Marshall MG100DFX with built in effects (it was what I could afford) and I need advice on running my pedels. I have a Ibanez tube screamer, MXR envelope filter and Boss DS-1 distortion and Boss E.Q. along with a Boss NS-2 noise gate. I have connected together and seperately and no matter what order I try the sound is terrible. I have tried thru both clean and overdrive channels. Is it just a product of my lo end amp or would a different effect pedel possibly be the answer? Any tips will be much appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know that amp, but I can give you one important tip: NEVER use 2 distortion pedals at once! Specially not in front of a Marshall, cause I guess the amp has some gain itself already, in the end that would just be gain overkill. Check out both distortion pedals individually and then use the one that you like better (Tube Screamer! wink.gif) You can play around with the eq and try to fine tune your sound a bit, and of course the gate can help to eliminate unwanted noise. Do you really need that envelope filter? And what about those built in effects of the Marshall, are you using those ones too? In this case, less could be more, don't use too many effects, personally I prefer a good sound without tons of effects, my main rhythm sound for example is my pure Rectifier, only tamed by my hush, thats it.

Yeah. I agree with Marcus. Never use two distortion pedals together in chain although I actually do occasionally but never together. Get a good sound without pedals first and then add a distortion pedal in and get a good sound you like with that and keep adding pedals but don't add unecessary pedals if you don't think they add to your sound.

Thanks for the tip. Using the tube screamer only improved it for me.

DS1 is not made for that amp, I suggest you put it away, cause it's a very specific sounding stompbox for tube amps.

My advise is to use only tubescreamer on the clean channel. If you want to use tubescreamer on overdrive channel you will have to use it as a booster (drive (almost) 0, tone 6, volume 7)

My advice is to use overdrive channel from the marshall. It's the best overdrive you have from all the stuff you mentioned.

Hey. Just a little thought on the amp. I once had a Marshall MG50FX and i traded it cause it would sound terrible no matter what.
Still, i don't know the "DFX" series, but i read that they're slightly better than the "FX" ones.
One thing i have for sure, Tubescreamer is way better than a marshall's solid state digital overdrive.
