Recipe For Getting Faster, I don't want to get super speedy. More like 16th notes at 140-150

I'm just getting back into guitar playing after about a 12 year break and I need to pick up a little speed. I wasn't fast the first time I quit playing and I'm not any faster after a 12 year hiatus. ohmy.gif

Right now, I can play the basic patterns from Kris' speed picking lessons at 110 BPM (16th notes). I guess I'd like to get up to 140-150 BPM 16th notes for now.

What's the best use of my time? Is working specifically on speed picking 10 minutes a day going to help me progress? Is 60 minutes a day counter-productive?

Can someone give me an outline of what I need to be working on each week or each session?

Thanks.

Sure man, I`m glad you asked. Kris`s lessons are a great way to start building up your speed. But that is just the beginning. You must understand that going up to 140-150bpm requiers some discilpline and months of training in order to play it properly. Just sit back and relax. If you can play it today, practise every day for some 20-30 minutes some speedpicking lessons and you will be on your way to become a serious player. No one knows how long can it take, maybe 3 months, maybe a year, maybe never. I think that you are serious about guitar and i think you can do it (otherwise you wouldn`t be here right wink.gif ). Try to practise every day, even for 10minutes. If you can find 10 minutes every day, slowly you will get hooked up, but try to not overdo it. Just think and act patiently and you will in time get your speed and technique. If you have some specific problems with your practising routine or anything, feel free to post and we will help you as much as we can. Cheers smile.gif

Would this be considered a legit exercise to help bump up the next level?

It's basically little burst/rest. The bursts get longer and there's less rest after each 4 bars.

The TAB is for rhythms only, the patterns would vary.

Hi there,

Im sorry I overlooked this thread, and I will try my best to help you out a little. Maybe if I explain a little about how I practice daily it might give you a little insight into your practice regime.

The first thing I would like you to do, is ask yourself if your current playing is clean, precise, and in time at the current speeds your playing at. If not, you need to take a step back to a speed where you are doing just that.

Many people place massive emphasis on playing fast, this is generally a bad idea because it is far better to play slow, clean and intime than fast and "sloppy". Of course there is nothing wrong with wanting to play fast, I absolutely love shredding fast but Its something you have to work towards through many many hours.

When I first started shredding 3-note per string patterns i started off at 60bpm for 16th note triplets. I knew that playing this slow for a long time would ultimately be the fastest way to my goal of shredding like a pro. As time passed the speed naturally happened and I moved up to 80 bpm. I would spend further months shredding at this speed (before moveing up again) despite the fact i knew i could go alot faster! This is because I belive personally that speed needs to happen naturally and not forced.

So how much time do I spend daily speed picking? generally 2 hours of very focused practice. Im not saying you need to do the same, you may be at a level where less is enough for you.

What do I practice daily? Everything and anything i can lay my hands on!! For example recently I have spent 1 hour a day practicing Muris's Thirds lesson, and 1 hours a day on Pavels Ionian Scale lesson. I have played these lessons over and over for many months, and probably will continue to do so !! smile.gif Soon I will Introduce a third lesson, most likely the Speed Bursts lesson. In addition to that I get a good 1 hours sweep-picking in to boot!!

Mentally I am always preparing to rotate lessons and exercises. Phase one out slowly, and introduce a newer more challenging one.

You can absolutely acheive you goal of speed picking at 140bpm or whatever. But you need to get there slowly. Its also very important that whatever lessons, exercises or patterns you choose to practice - you need to make sure you are haveing fun and enjoying yourself. This is the key to success in my opinion.

I hope I have helped a little, and not rambled on to much. If you need help chooseing exercies please just ask.

kind regards

Matt wink.gif

I don't want to discourage you. But that exercise isn't not really that great. You need an exercise that is constantly changing strings. That exercise will teach you how to play triplets properly, tremolo pick, and may help you with those metal breakdowns if you choose to move it to the low E string. And if you are going to practice that, make sure to play it correctly, many people including myself had a hard time learning how to play triplets properly, but that exercise is pretty good for teaching someone. 16th note triplets (which are in there) mean that there is 3 notes in the time of 1 eigth note, so 6 notes per beat. 8th note triplets are 3 notes per beat.
