This is our thread for MTP during October!
Since you already started with Alternate Picking Thirds lesson I suggest that we use that one for month/REC assignment, ofc feel free to ask anything you need and post takes of it during month, you don't have to wait whole month to post final take only, more takes-more hints from me.
And as for first weekly lets try something a bit mixed, use BT for Em Melodic solo and compose a solo inspired with AP Thirds lesson, use shapes and patterns from that lesson but using proper scales we discussed earlier to fit progression nicely. It doesn't have to be 100% inspired tho but as much as possible would be cool. Let me know if you have problems with any of scales, I'll be pleased to help you with that. And of course I would need a video or audio of that solo after 7 days, ok?

Hello Muris
OK. For month/rec I will do the AP at full speed for Cmaj and Cmin. I will post a few vid's so we can see how I am progressing
The main problem I am having now for this lesson is the finger position (what finger to use for the G and B sting for example) in the sequences in third intervals part going down and up. Same with the Cmaj. I don't seem to get them right and and I make mistakes every time
I will try to make a tab for Em solo using Alternate picking. That will be in about 7 days in video or audio or both.
See you next time
Cheers Robert

For weekly assignments you can post audio or video, video would be better of course but audio would work as well, no need for both tho!!
And as for fingering, I know what confuses you, I'll give you full explanations first thing when I'm back home from gig, I'm leaving in 5mins and it would take me lot of writing to explain everything.

Okay Muris,
I can upload again
Here is my first weekly try of the AP of C maj/min at 60 bpm.
I can surely hear some progress here, specially over C major part!
However I noticed few "wrong" notes when you play C major in sequences of thirds, ascending line. You play E, D and E notes on high E instead of playing E, D and F. That leads you to totally different descending line compared to original lesson, you start from F note instead of E and whole pattern comes different. I'm gonna try to post a tab of it here and pay attention on bold notes.
Then try to work out the bar that comes after bold notes, descending line. First note should be E on high E, 12 fret, not F as you played it.
Now, major version had some more problems timing wise, you're probably still struggling with fingering so you went out of tempo a lot. You can try to practice that part by using different monitoring settings tho, set backing volume louder and lower the guitar volume a bit, it might help you to follow backing track and tempo far better. After you record it you can set mix back to normal where both backing and guitar are approx equally loud.
What about improvised take over Em backing track? That was our weekly assignment actually, AP Thirds is our monthly assignment for REC.

Hi Muris,
Thx for the feedback
I misunderstood
I thought improvised take over Em backing track was monthly assignment. But I will work on Em improve this week and will post it

Yeah, seems so. Regular lessons are monthly assignments and for REC as well, we can't use improvised takes for REC so far.

Hi Muris
I am working on an improve on the Em backing track.
I am tabbing it in GP but there I only have a track with the solo. I there a way I can import the backing as an Mp3 in GP5 so i have two tracks?
Posted by: Muris Varajic Oct 19 2009, 11:51 PM
I'm really not sure if you can import mp3 in GP, it works only with midi files I think. But you don't have to bother with tabbing your improvisation atm, just record an audio take, it'll be quite enough. I mention tabbing your takes in general AFTER you record them so that you could compare where you went wrong with timing.

At the Em to F# part I was to late. I wanted to end on the E string 14 th position when F# was played but I had timing problems with the pivot sequence I did on the Em part.
I must do that faster this is what I wanted to play:
Em Em S S S S S S S S S S S S S S --12-10h-12-8h-12-7h-12----12-10h-12-8h-12-7h ------------------------10------------------- --------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------
Em F# S S S S S S S S H --12-10h-12-8h-12-7h-12--L-14--------| -------------------------------------| -------------------------------------| -------------------------------------| -------------------------------------| -------------------------------------|

That was quite nice Robert, I can tell that your improvisation views are getting wider and wider as we work more on improvisation, well done and keep it up!
Here's our new weekly assignment tho, this time I have something different for you. Here's a GP file with kind a short solo that I composed for this occasion. What I want from you is to learn to play this piece, of course, but I also want you to figure out a chord progression for it as well. My suggestion would be to use one chord per bar, that would be quite enough. Analyze notes, figure out which scale were used, also pay attention if there were some arpeggios used cause that would instantly help you with chords. You can write chords in GP file as post it here or you can simply write progression in a post, what works better for you.
As for playing, you can record your take over metronome only, ofc if you can use some kind of drum loop it would be even better.

According to the notes in this solo I would say this is in the key of A: I see the solo has 3 sharps. A scale has 3 sharps in it. Notes used are from the A scale: A-B-C#-D-E-F#-G#-A
Chord progession major: Major triads I-ii-iii-IV-V-vi-vii
Bar 1:
Possible chord here: A (maj) notes: A,C#,E or variations like: A maj7 notes: A,C#,E,G# or or A2 / Aadd9 notes: A,C#,E,B
A possiblity is also Cmin7 notes: C#,E,G#,B
Bar 2: D chord notes: D,F#,A or variations like Dmaj 7 notes: D,F#,A,C# (if 1 bar was Amaj7)
Bar 3: E chord E add 9 notes:E,G#,B,F#
But also Bm7: notes:B,D,F#,A
I have to go now
Will finish this later

I see some nice thinking here but I'm not gonna comment it now so lets wait till you finish it. good job.

I resume
Bar 1: A Bar 2: D Bar 3: E Bar 4: E
Bar 5: G note played with Em chord: notes: E,G,B
E, F#, G#, B, E, F#, G#, B notes play over Bm chord, notes B,D,F# or variation of Bm like Bm7/9
Bar 6: first 5 notes ( F#, A#, C#, E, F# ) F#minor7, notes: F#,A,C#,E Last 3 notes (D, C#,D) Bm chord
Bar 7 notes played: E, E, F#, G#,A, B, C#,D, E, F# G#, A,B E 7 Chord: notes: E,G#,B,D
Bar 8 Notes: A, E, C# , B , G#, A possible chord chord A notes: A,C#,E,G#
Let see what it should be...

Very very nice!!
Bar 5 should be Em tho, no need for using Bm there. And I guess you had a typo regarding bar 6, it was F#7 (cause of note A#), first you named A# note but then you said A which probably led to this tiny confusion.
Is mp3 take ready to go? I would like to hear how you play it, expression wise.

Ahh, sweeeet tone!! This was a very surprise I must say, I almost expected distorted tone but you came up with clean one, good thinking. Tho I was expecting you to play it over metronome for better time tracking but never mind, this is more than great imo.
I just came home from London tho, sorry for not posting your last weekly assignment before, will do it asap!!

Thanks Muris,
I didn't know how many bpm I should use.
Is it 80 bpm
Posted by: Muris Varajic Oct 26 2009, 10:03 PM
Well yeah, tempo in GP file was 80 bpm. Anyways, no need to record another take, just use metronome for next similar assignments (GP file without BT) and it shall be just fine!
BTW, how is your REC assignment going??? We have few more days left.

Well to be honest, I still make the same mistake at the end. (and I feel a "little" silly about that cause we are talking about very complicated stuff here)
But the thing is I have that wrong 3th sequence in my head and I can't get it out. Today I started to loop the sequence starting on 20 bpm up to 50. That worked fine. I have to cement that to get it right otherwise I will go on automatic pilot and will play the wrong sequence at the end.
I will try to make a video tomorrow.
We will see
Posted by: Muris Varajic Oct 27 2009, 12:23 AM
Yeah, it happens when we learn something in a wrong way, damn hard to get rid of it!!
Break it in parts, ascending and descending parts maybe, look for first note in every bar and let them be your guide, listen closely to BT and keep straight 16ths, thumbs up!
Posted by: Muris Varajic Oct 28 2009, 05:12 PM
And here's our last weekly assignment for October, I putted couple of different bends here to see how our bends and intonation work, it shouldn't be too hard for you.
After playing tone of notes and to many bad takes this is the best I could make of it and ......it is still not perfect.
Looking closely I saw my righthand wasn't at that video.
So I did I don;t know how many takes to get in down but still there are wrong notes....it is driving me crazy... I doesn't seems to get right...

So here is the other one I did - I don;t know how many takes trying to get it right- , but unfortunately it isn't...
because now the webcame didn't start recording at bar one for some reason so I had to full that with some text in the beginning of the video...
and yes I didn't play it 100%
I give up for today ....(too much frustration....) and try tomorrow to do one that is without errors.

Ohh, I see some MAJOR progress here, MAJOR!!!
Go ahead and compare first half of these 2 takes with those you did earlier in MTP, these are almost 100% perfect in time, well done.
I said first half because that's were he have problems, when minor kicks in. All you have to do now is to play minor part of the lesson only, figure out all fingerings and clean up your picking. Play minor part few times and then connect it with major part, trust me, it's gonna take hour or two top since you already did 50% of job by nailing major part, well effort, you are veeeeery close.

Thx Muris,
This feedback is good for my motivation.
Will concentrate on the minor scale/fingering and connect that with the major part.
Take to you later.

After a few mis-takes ((it was a hard work again...) I managed to get one that is quit 'perfect'. Only problem is that that web came says it is recording but when view it I am missing a split of a second at the beginning ..hmmm. I think a need a cameraman... .. anyway
here it is
Looking forward to your feedback
Cheers

Ohh, I'm not sure if this one would pass for REC, you pulled minor part quite steady in rhythm but you made some mistake in major part and after that all note were displaced, C note on low E MUST be the first note in each 8 bars, it just must.
Can I ask for one more take with better focus on all notes?
Otherwise I'm afraid it won't pass.
edit: just to clear things up for you, I meant it won't pass for REC which is not the most to continue with MTP tho!
And I would also need that last weekly assignment, bends lick, we have broken the deadline a bit.

Hi Muris
Yes I know I have broken the deadline, but I have underestimated my skills on this complete: didn't think it would be as hard as this.(I have pain in my hands form playing up and down up and down from yesterday and today...Guess I have problems to concentrate on this or maybe to much concentration.. I don't know why I mess up)
So I thinks this is a really good lesson for me
Thing is I also have a tight schedule with work, rehearsal with my band have had a gig last week and this weekend I have had family maters ....so things are hunting me a bit at the moment..do the best I can to keep everyone satisfied
Here is the bends lick. MTP_oct.MP3 ( 469.39K )

Bends licks was played nicely! There were only 1 or 2 whole tone bends that were not 100% in pitch but you'll nail that soon, no worries.
Sorry to hear about your troubles with time, family issues etc, I fully appreciate your effort and I'll try not to give you too hard lessons as we continue with MTP. Feel free to post this (or new one if you have done it) video take in REC, I'll close this topic now and open a new one for November, all good.
