Using Backingtracks In Live Concerts Options

Hey guys, I was wondering how many of you that are in a band, have used backing tracks with additional effects/ guitars/ voices or such in a live context?

It is a rather tricky business, as the drummer needs to have the track with the metronome on one channel and on another channel the track without the metronome has to be heard on the PA system, in the whole mix.

If something goes wrong...ka-boom! The gig goes down in flames I am a bit worried as this Sunday will be the first time when Aria will be using such backing tracks in a live context, but I am also excited because of the huge wall of sound we will create

I was thinking that Todd maybe, knows stuff about this?

Ah I was in a band that did something similar, we had a keyboard/sequencer that we used quite a bit with pre-sequenced tracks, our drummer was pretty good at playing along with the click track so I can't remember it ever being a problem. It was definately a little more pressure on him though.

I have done this with my two bands... a long ago with Damnation, my metal band, we used to have keyboards, backing vocals and some rhythm guitars also... this is very dangerous and the whole show depends on the drummer. We had a 24 minutes song with lots of compound meters... it had lots extra stuff in the track (we used a minidisc) we only played it live once but everything went perfect!

Nowadays with Cirse, we use an ipod for synth arrangements... in tracks like Tecno and Asesina Serial. We deleted extra guitars now that we have another guitar player.

Last night, after the video chat session, we had our first full backing rehearsal. We have tracks for each of the songs we will be playing and the only thing which we have to take care of is to establish a general convention regarding the way in which the backing leads the drummer.
