GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ My Practice Regime

Posted by: Raph Jul 27 2009, 12:51 PM

Hey guys, sorry for not posting since forever due to projects and whatnot...

Anyways, it's holiday time for me, and since I have nothing else planned, I'm gonna spend more time practicing. Here, I have a 7 hour practice reigime that I'm gonna try and stick to and I was wondering what you make of it...

Warm up - 5 minutes

Picking technique - 40 mins (20 mins on alternate picking and 20 mins on sweep, economy picking)

Scales - 40 mins

Legato technique - 40 mins

Rhythm playing and learning new chords - 1 hour

Soloing and jamming - 1 hour

Transcribing and Ear Training - 30 mins

Style Analysing - 30 mins

Learning new songs - 1 hour

EDIT: Theory has been replaced with ear training, transcribing and style study.

Is this going to be everyday? You could soon have PhD in music smile.gif Great practicing plan. I would just say that you don't need to stick to these numbers strictly. If you think that some of these techniques goes well then just continue and leave something else for the next day. Never break a good continuity. You can learn theory when you go to bed. I used to read books about it like reading a newspapers. After when I take guitar I try to use what I learned. Your plan can lead to a great progress.

I like your practicing plan!
I would add to it Ear training and Transcribing for 30 minutes a day. It is more than enough trust me if you do it for a month you will notice a lot of improvement in your improvising and composition skills.

Good luck with your practice plan and stick with it!

Thanks! I'm going to certainly add that to my practice plan.

I'm not going to try and stick to these numbers...they're more like a guideline to the minimum amount of time I should practice this area of study. If I feel that these techniques are working for me, then by all means I will continue. And about theory, I guess I could study theory in my free time but learn a little bit during my scale and chord practice...smile.gif

Exactly! And that way you will see the result for sure. Good luck

You have a lot of things planned there, work it on. smile.gif

I see no problem with your schedule, except maybe for the fact that it's 7 hours long ! biggrin.gif If you can keep that work up, I'm sure you'll reach level 10 in a few months ! biggrin.gif

Great plan man, can't wait to see results. You should post your progress on this topic regularly so we can check out how it is going with the plan. smile.gif

If you continue to play like this for one year, you will have really extraordinary technique. I mean, slow, clean, with a metronome...

Tapping will come in my legato practice and sweeping comes in picking. What kind of a guitarist will I be if I don't practice them.... biggrin.gif

It's also a great way to practice arpeggios...

Hi Raph,

I've seen your regime and 7 hours is like a dream smile.gif I work 8-10 hors a day so I devided my practie in two parts. The first is in the morning before I go to work and it is sometimes the only time I can practice (ovehours etc.). So here it is

Morning:
-Scales (40- 60 min): -Chose scale
-Incorporate alternate picking, legato, optional-tapping scales (use of metronome)
-Try to learn new lick for the particular scale or repeat the old for the scale that day

Evening :
- warm-up (5 min)
- tech (25 min) : -sweep picking-
- practice new song for this week or work on own songs (40 min)
- practice melodies-solos/segment- (40 min)
- transcribing by ear- (20 min)

Weekend:

repetition of the week + new assignments.

It's nowhere near your regime but I try my best to go trough all these things.
Congrats on yours! smile.gif

BR,

Denis

Denis your plan also sounds good. I think if you spend only 2 hours a day you can see a huge progress in a year, not to mention more hours and longer overall period. Every minute that you can spend for practicing will be well worth.

I agree with Emir. I especially like in your plan Denis transcribing part!
Keep up the good work guys, no giving up please wink.gif

Tnx guys, appreciate the comments! Progress is very slow and in the last half year I really accepted that it's a long/lifetime journey.

PS: Emir, have a nice holiday...give me a call when you come to Croatia! biggrin.gif...
