Success is not obtained overnight. It comes in instalments; you get a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow until the whole package is given out. The day you procrastinate, you lose that day's success.

BINGO!!! Input level is one of the most important things of all/ever/full stop, especially for home recording where software sims are being used. If the input level is to low, you just can't make it sound very good. Just like you need enough level to hit the front of an amp, you need enough to hit a sim as well

I also see people that just crank it to max level on the input gain and think that's good too. Literally have had people send me recorded .wav files that almost didn't have waveforms showing. Almost like this (not my picture):

It has always baffled me that people don't really look it up first. Spend 10 minutes learning to gainstage. I bet there are videos of it on YouTube that take about 2 minutes to watch - most of them look to be 5-10 minutes, but the point usually takes a very short time to get across. In this digital age it doesn't really take that long. Plug in your guitar to your audio interface and find that sweet spot.

Here's one, anyway:

Great tips guys! This knowledge is essential. If you don't set your input level correctly, you won't be able to sound good.

This lesson adds many more important tips related to tone:

I don't know about him, but I actually do the same. My DI box has an input and a thru-put, and I use it to have ease of access to running both directly to my Focusrite/computer, but also to my amp. Sort of like this (imagine my Focusrite/computer instead of the mixer):

Yeah I can see that, but I'm wondering why he does it in that video. Interesting
