#39 Shredding The Blues Part Ii, Barred Pull Offs / Alternate Picking Options

INTRO

This is PART II of what we started in the last Quick Licks with SHREDDING THE BLUES. This lick also goes great with GABES blues backing from the JAM WITH GABE COLLAB. It's a very cool backing to jam over and you can use any inspiration from this to create a take for the GABE JAM! Here is the link to the JAM WITH GABE page.

Just like the last licks YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLAY THIS FAST. You can play it at any speed that feels right and it will still sound great against the backing or by itself. It's a great way to start building your speed/precision. It was with licks like this that I finally broke through my own speed barrier and began to be able to play at any speed I liked. This lick uses something similar to a BAR CHORD and you fret two strings at once and leave them fretted. Then you do pull offs and picking which makes it sound like you are playing way faster than you actually are. Your palm muting is very important since these two strings stay fretted and you have to mute any unwanted string noise.

*Make sure to watch the vid!.

*NOTE: This lick is a great transition lick from not being able to shred, to being able to shred. It lets you play beyond your regular ability by leveraging pull offs and a barred shape instead of making the left hand stay in constant motion like many shred licks.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS : You can pick this any way that feels comfortable. I'm picking it using the same approach. Trust your fingers and let them guide you. Getting used to finding your way is also part of the key to breaking your own speed barrier.

Nicely Done!!! This is the one of those that I used that TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES "ish" opening riff thing to build a solo lick. This is not an easy bit to play. It requires pretty much constant string traverse and you pick hand never gets to stop moving. It's pretty much non stop the entire time. You did very well on this which is Awesome! Learning just about any Racer X or Paul Gilbert tune/riff/lick is a great way to learn a lot of things at one time. You'll find those skills translate to a host of other things. Super Congrats!! You KRUSHED it. You are knocking up against the upper decks on Rank for Quick Licks. In no time at all you may over take as TOP DAWG.Keep it up! Nailed it and .....
