i watched pavel's lesson on sweep picking and i was fine.i can do the right motions with my "left hand" and i can sweep pick with my right but i dont undertand what was he talking about with his plam muting. isnt letting go mutes the string instantly? i have to add palm muting? and if so how do i get the motion down because i cant palm mute while sweeping with that kind of accuracy.

I believe Pavel is referring to muting unwanted noise from open strings with your right hand when he is talking about palm muting. Not palm muting to get that heavy sound when doing and alternate picked run. Hope that helps. biggrin.gif

Basically its about keeping your palm rested over the strings you are not playing. As you sweep downwards *roll your palm* over the strings your not playing and it will clean up your sound smile.gif Does that make sense? I hope so lol laugh.gif

When you sweep up, the open strings are not as noisey as on the way down, at least thats what I have found. As long as I am muting the low (bass) strings with my palm i find i get a clean enough sound. Some people might use there left hand to help mute on the way back up, but this is something someone else might need to explain to you smile.gif

I always keep my palm on the bridge, its just im rolling my palm accordingly smile.gif

The sweeping motion:
When you go down the palm of your right hand covers the unwanted strings to keep them from ringing.
When you go up could be a combination of the palm of your right hand and the left hand muting (index finger and others as well).

It is a bit harder to play while muting strings, generally. That is because your right hand wrist is locked, and you cannot use your usual routine. Don't mute them to hard, that is generally why most people have trouble with this, mute lightly, and keep your hand relaxed.

Make sure you mute with both your left hand fingers and right hand palm. That is the only way all the notes will come clean and smooth smile.gif
