Ok so I will have been with GMC nearly two years and when I joined up I was completely brand new to the guitar. Over the past two years I have seen my skills progress well, and never felt bored with my practice routine.

I have mainly been practicing the harder lessons, level 8 & 9. This past year I have been concentrating on Muris's alternate picking lesson, Paul Gilbert Lesson no1, and most recently Marcus's neoclassical etude no2.

So, my picking skills I feel are strong, im accurate and im used to timeing changes. But Im not sure what to progress to next. Should I practice some more GMC lessons? or should I learn a peice of music that I like next.

I have avoided up untill now practicing non GMC stuff for two reasons:

1. With GMC lessons I can see the correct fingering (which to me is very important, as you dont get this on a random tab)

2. I have always seen good progress learning GMC solos and etudes, so not had much reason to change.

But i feel now is the time to branch out perhaps?

Im not at all into Metal (unless its like Racer - X style ), or even classic Rock. I do however LOVE Neo Classical like Yngwies Far beyond the sun, Adagio, Icarus Dream, or blue for example. I also totally dig "real classical" music on eletric guitar, much like alot of the bach peices Paul Gilbert plays on the Guitars from Mars video - im a total bach nut !

I sometimes wonder if I should be playing the piano or violin laugh.gif laugh.gif

So my question is, what would you Instructors and students recommend I progress to playing next? smile.gif

Hi Matt,
What about improvisation?

Hi Jerry,

I generally improvise daily over pentatonic scales, but I have a lack of interesting chops, especially in the 3nps area sad.gif I still dont really understand how to make my own chord progressions either unsure.gif

I think the key is to listen and play some folk/pop/rock or whatever you want, where there are different chord progressions. You know, also in metal music there are chord progressions but if you take a look at different genres, you will have different points of view. Knowing the theory about tonality and chord construction can help too, because you know the relationship between chords.
Use your ears as well to find chords and melodies when you're listening something new.

Hi Matt I think i am on a same point of practice like you:)

I can play and learn lessons from GMC very easily and i think i have a good technique but i found out that this is not all.
I want to make something on my own. You said your chops are boring when Improvising and you have no idea how to make a chord Progression, I think that's the things you should concentrate on your practice. I try it too and it's really hard:)
Try to learn songs/riffs by ear and try to develop your own ideas. Maybe this is the way to go:)

I agree with what Edguy said, but also, I think it could really give you a kick to learn some music you enjoy. I don't really know how good you are, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could play like for example Racer X's Technical Difficulties, I know I would get a huge kick from playing that song. (Wich sadly is something I'm far from being able to), or if that's too hard maybe Down To Mexico or something. I really think you'd really get a kick from playing some "real" song, and I think you should try that. For fingerings etc you could always look at youtube videos, but I also think you should be able to figure that out by yourself and not worry to much if it's the same way as the one who composed the music would play it, the only important thing is that it sounds good.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I understand intervals and how to construct chords, triads and 7ths in a given key no probs. But the problem is knowing what to do with them, so I think im going to start to learning some Racer - X stuff, and maybe some Yngwie too. Im going to start to really analzye the chord progressions and licks, and try to get some ideas for my own stuff this way smile.gif

Ear training and improvising are great topics to work on indeed.
But for the best results with them
you should learn as much more stuff as possible.
And I think of both GMC lessons and real music.
With learning new stuff you expand your lick library,
which is absolutely the most important thing for improvising.
And at the same time you train your ears,
of course if you learn more with ears and less from tabs. smile.gif

I know that starting improvising is always hard. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-less...writing-lesson/
Ivan haw a great lesson on this topic.I think that good practice is to take a simplest progression,A C D,and try to come up with few themes every day.
