I myself am more of arpeggio/modal player, but now my band has gave me the role of composing custom solo for ROck you like a huricane by Scorpions. Since the whole song is based on pentatonic, I cant dwelve into modes too much (the background is just E,e,e,G,g,A,a,C,D,d, repeting till the end of time) and so I have to learn some pentatonic shredding licks.

One that appaled me was that syncopated zakk wildish lick with bending

-------10------------10------------10------------10-------|
--13b-----13-10-13b-----13-10-13b-----13-10-13b-----13-10-|
----------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------------|

I have been trying to master for a few months, but after few moments of practicing, my pinky started to hurt like hell, I was unable to play for several hours and that stupid lick is still slow and dirty as... when I begun:)

Anyone has some tips for practicing this kind of stuff?
Btw. any other cool (pentatonic is not cool..) pentatonic licks are welcome as well

THE PENTATONIC IS AWESOME! Especially for soloing!

I have no Idea about modes and arpeggios but I could tear your face of with some Pentatonic shreds, hehe^^

First of all: Use your index and ring finger for this lick!!! It's faster and makes the bend easier!
Now you can make variations of that lick, you could move it up in the scale (Ozzy Osbourne: No More Tears Solo) or you could use some tapping licks out of the pentatonic boxes and don't forget some wide bends with vibrato in the style of gary moore to take the tension out of the solo...

Why can't you just write your own solo?

Just a tip, play bended note on 13th fret with ring finger, not with pinky.

Omg, of course if you do bends with pinky even with help from other fingers, pinky will just die after some time..

Edit- pentatonic IS cool!

Pentatonic is an awesome tool for rock soloing. Check out Paul Gilbert who uses it all the time and it sounds great. Or you can have a look at Muris´ Pentatonic Licks series and realize how melodic Penatonics can sound.
Oh, I´d never use my pinky for such bends. biggrin.gif

Actually I was think of bended 13th fret only, not regular one,
I would use index for 1oth fret and ring and pinky for 13th,
bend with ring. smile.gif

I think it`s more of pinky endurance than strenght, because it is less used usually, so there are less calluses. If you are so tough, try to do some 2 whole tone bends with pinky on 22th fret for 10 minutes laugh.gif laugh.gif

I don't seem to have the same problem as you, can play the lick with both ringfinger and pinky.

Must say the ringfinger is easier though, so I prefer to play it that way.
I see most people do around here tongue.gif

OT : Is it just me or is it possible to get more posts on a page ? First I always thought maximum was 10, now its 20 ?
