Hi everyone!

What are your music goals for 2013? Of course we always want to improve ourselves in all aspects, but in which area do you want to improve the most this year? For example:

music theory
improvisation
playing more tightly
finishing a lot of own songs
playing arpeggios precisely
using more fast licks in the appropriate situation

etc.

My main goals for this year are: to practice a lot of hybrid picking, broaden my jazz knowledge, and venture to fresh and more bold territories regarding songwriting.

My music goals for 2013 are to focus on practicing slapping technique as well as improvisation, record and release as many of my band's as well as my solo project songs as possible + shoot a music video for one of them which will open up space for composing and recording brand new songs. Also improve my mixing skills and upgrade my home project studio. Lot of interesting things to look forward to! smile.gif

Sounds like a lot of promising things going on for you, Bogdan!
Regarding the music video shoot: do you plan to create it yourself, or it is better to hire an outside company, even with the newest improvements of the lower-budget video equipment available nowadays?

Yes, the foundation is crucial, I agree.

If you had to list the 3 most important areas of your guitar playing to improve this year, which ones would these be?

I'd say Ear training is top of the list. Working out heaps of songs and tabbing them out, drums and bass included.
And keep working on my bends, vibrato, ap, sweeping and timing don't forget timing.

We are actually planning to record the video ourselves - we have gotten a pretty good gear which is similar to some local smaller production companies here. As our goal is to get out as much of new material as possible, saving the budget on smaller video production would help us fit in the plan. TV music video placement opportunities here are very limited (and the quality we'll produce will work for most of those placement opportunities anyway). It would be awesome to do a high end production music video some time in the future though smile.gif

Transcribing improves the ear immensely, so it is a great choice - and a big fun too! smile.gif

Good to hear that you are aware of the details (vibrato, bends, etc) as well, they could add up a lot to the overall sound and style.

Yes, when you have the appropriate gear then it's definitely a wise choice to do it yourselves. I'll be curious to see the video, so when you finish it, then let me know - I have plans for some interesting videos in the near future, and every bit of knowledge and reference helps tremendously wink.gif

Some of my goals for this year is to finish the composition and recording of Cirse's new album. Continue improving as a guitar player and composer. Keeping a healthy and balanced life (gym, swimming, healthy food). Producing good albums from some cool bands at my studio.
And many more that will appear once this ones are done or being done. smile.gif

And good luck for the new album of Cirse!

Wow, that's a major goal, and I hope you'll reach it!
Can you tell me more about this school? Are you going to study contemporary classical music or contemporary jazz/rock? What is the best thing in this school, in other words, what is the main reason for you to go there?

I like it, your 'top 3' covers a lot of aspects of guitar playing.

You're spot on - both learning theory and applying it are equally important. If you do both simultaneously, then you're on the right path,

If you have time, then head on to the new topic https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=47710, you can guess the mode of the song segment of a famous guitarist I've just put in via SoundCloud. It is one of the coolest modes IMO.

Its called Selkirk College its in Nelson , BC. Its purely contemporary so we will be exposed to anything from fusion and metal to jazz and blues.
Its the only school in north america that is a sister school of Berklee College of music, So it follows the exact berklee curriculum for a fraction of the price. Also after 2 years at Selkirk college, I can transfer to Berklee instantly , so its quite wonderful, plus in such a rural area there are far less distractions so i can just stay in the shed and work on my guitaring tongue.gif

Get my scales & modes memorized.

Learn the actual notes on the fretboard with the help of The Professor!

Get my playing to sound more musical rather than "note playing" if that makes any sense.

Do seven REC's this year.

Great idea for a thread! It will keep us all accountable. biggrin.gif

- Record/Produce my band's EP
- Incorporate more of my chops into my usual improvising (before school I was all chops, during school I was half chops and half musicality, and now I'm like 95% musicality with 5% chops. Want to get more of the chops I've built up into my improvising, not just in my writing)
- Finish my diploma, get accept into the degree program at my Music School in Vancouver
- Continue writing my own material
- Record at least one song of my own material, hopefully over the summer

Sounds cool, items #1 and #2 on your list will give you a major boost in your guitar playing, and so do the seven REC's!
Yes, I understand totally what you mean by sounding more musical, and it's a good thing that you aim it consciously, this is already half the road to success.

Oh yes, writing down goals frees up a lot of willpower and energy to actually reach those goals.

Your list is quite impressive. I think that 95% musicality is a good thing, but I understand what you mean - you'd like to incorporate more interesting runs where the music needs that, while retaining all that musicality.

I don't really have any set goals for this year, but this thread at least makes me think in that direction. smile.gif

The two things I would like to focus more on is technique practice and lick vocabulary.

More precisely, I want to become a more fluent alternate picker, also my sweep picking still needs lots of improvement. And I need to broaden my views when it comes to improvising and composing, the same ideas keep repeating in my collab solos etc.

I would also like to complete a selection of Bushido tasks (only a year or so too late).
