Hi friends

I just joined Gab's Army.
Lot of work lot of fun already!
Anyway here are 2 recordings.
The first is a metal instrumental attempt I made 2 months ago (rhythm guitar and lead).
The second one is a blues impro I made just before beginning my journey here.
All the guitars were made in one take to show my "skills" at the moment.
I am new to recording by the way.
I want some honest brutal feedback because I want to know where I am right to know where I want to be in the near future.
Thanks for your time.

Ok, I will say my honest opinion from my point of view wink.gif

The first feel when I listened the metal take it was that two different songs are played in the same time but mostly because of timming issues between rhythm guitar and lead guitar. Another important thing is that your guitar it's not in tune and the tone it's too muddy.

At blues take, I will mention the same problem with guitar not in tune and the tone too muddy. Also I hear problems in making bends.
But I like your improvisation idea from blues take. With all things played right I'm sure you will come with some awesome things.
Don't worry you are already in Gab army so you are on amazing hands smile.gif You will fix all these much fast than you can imagine smile.gif

Hi Rhida! As I told you earlier, your playing needs to be polished and we are already working on each of the topics (HERE) and techniques you need to improve it, patient and hard work are the keys.

Let's go with some detailed feedback for both recordings:

Metal track:

This track has some good ideas, but it shows that you need to work on many techniques as well as your melodic sense and rhythm in order to polish your soloing and rhythm skills. The most important things to improve are:

- Rhythm: The riffs are not played tight with the drums and this is a big problem because everything you play over it won't sound tight. The base must go with the drums and this is not happening. The "rhythm" section of the routine I assigned you will help you to master this.

- Bending: Your bends don't reach the correct pitch most of the times. I've never seen a video from you but I suspect that you are not using extra fingers from your left hand to help the one that is bending and that's why you can't reach the note. It seems to be a strengh problem but your ear can also be responsible. Dedicate the 20 minutes bending section of the routine to fix this problem.

- Melodic sense: Your phrasing needs more sense, and the note choices need to be adjusted since most of the times the notes where you stay doesn't fit really good over the chords sounding. This is something that depends on your ear, but also on the connection between your mind (melody maker machine) and your fingers/fret board. You definitely need to develop your ear, improve the connection between mind/fret board and also and the way to practice this is practicing scales over chords, backing tracks and transcribing music. The "Creative Stuff" section of your routine is dedicated to this.

- Phrases rhythm: When you improve solos, your phrases keep the same rhythm most of the time and this makes your melodies linear and a bit predictable. Experiment using different rhythms while you jam, during the Creative stuff moment.

Blues Track:

The blues track has similar issues than the metal one so most of the things detailed previously can be applied to this one too. The only thing that I should add is that your faster licks show a weak Alternate Picking technique. You lost sync between both hands when you play faster and the result is unclean phrases. You also have a 20 minutes Alternate Picking section on your current routine so work on it! wink.gif

There are two techniques that are fundamental in blues, the first one is bending (my comment about this one is the same than for your metal track) and the second one is Vibrato. Where is your vibrato on this take? Work on it during the vibrato section of the routine!

-----

About your sound on both takes, I think that it's not anything to worry about, you have a good sound that you can keep on improving and evolving in order to find the guitar sound that you feel yours and that enhances your own personality. Keep on experimenting, you are on the right track. wink.gif

You already got some detailed feedback you can work on - so I will just chime in with my 5 cents.

Bad news:

Your two tracks do not provide a good listening experience, for the reasons mentioned by Gab and Monica. The blues track is slightly better though, but still very problematic. So your playing and recording skills currently do not lend themselves to any audiences, except ours of course smile.gif

Good news:

It's all very much fixable, and some big improvements can probably be made quickly. For example by improving the mix, and by re-recording without 'improvising' - rather practice the track over and over before recording (that's how must of us do it anyway - improvising is very difficult)

----

We had a great chat a few days ago, and I really hope you take my advice right and understand the reason I am being honest with you. You wanted honest feedback and I think anyone asking for it here should get it.

I understood from your questions in the chat that you are not inexperienced, and I think you will be able to take this feedback and turn into raw practicing energy.

Let us know your thoughts and keep us updated on your progress!

Thanks a lot all of you!
You pointed my weaknesses and what I need to know to fix them.
I must work hard be focused and more in control.
I struggled all these years because I had no direction. I practiced sometimes a lot but with no significant resuts. I had an online teacher before joining here. I learned a lot from him but something was missing and I was hoping for more feedback and more guidance from him (one every 6 weeks and the feedbacks and advices for all the students look a lot alike).
I don't want to be one more eternal late beginner/early intermediate guitar player for life
I want to really progress.
It's here and and now and it's up to me with your guidance.
You have no idea how much I am grateful for the feedbacks.
You are the best!

The guys have already given some excellent feedback already so I won't repeat the same advice !

The only thing I will underline is Kris's point about improvising versus composing. At your stage of development (and when we were at that stage) the best thing we could do is write out something that we could play. Improvisational results in our early days were not so good ! So already you're fighting a hard battle... you stand a better chance at making good progress by focusing on homing your overall sound. Get the bending sorted and the timing.

Use some of the lessons suggested in your introduction thread to improve those techniques and as you get better at them you can start learning short solos and hearing how the techniques are meant to sound and be used smile.gif

Great to know that our comments are helping Rhida. I've been very honest with the things that I said because I think that's the only way to transmit you every detail that must be worked to take your guitar playing to the next level. Let me also say that it's normal to have that feeling of being stuck but you have to convert it in motivation for more practice.

You have a very cool energy and motivation so I really trust in you, keep on the hard working and let us know about every new recording or question you have. Also keep me updated about how the routine is going.

Hey there smile.gif I think the guys pretty much pointed out everything there is to observe, so i will also insert my 5 cents, as Kris did smile.gif If you take the time to pay attention to the received suggestions, apply them in your playing and what's most important - no rushing, you will find yourself progressing pretty fast smile.gif

It's always a matter of having patience with yourself and realizing that this sort of transformation is not a magical thing that occurs overnight. Somethings take years, some take days, but what's most important in this case - understand YOUR rhythm and learn how to improve it. Some people understand theory quickly but are less prone to apply it in the same rhythm, while others understand it with difficulty, but have a natural sense of melody, great groove and amazing ears. I have met both types and everyone can enjoy music, once they understand how they function and which should be the focal points in their development smile.gif

Glad you found a good spot for learning here, so please keep us updated and share more recordings! I am looking forward to it!

Hi good peole!
Thanks Cosmin for the comments.
I listened to you guys and worked on my vibrato, bending on pitch, target notes and creative side.
A lot of suggestions I tried to apply in this solo with a backing track from a lesson I work on, Classic Ballad Bending Techniques to be exact.

So here's my first attempt after practicing 4 days in Gab's Army.

As usual, brutal honesty requested please! wink.gif

Hi Rhida! Great to see you working hard! I can feel a lot of creativity coming from you on this take, so at first I can say that it's very promising. It's always good to practice in a creative way, composing your own phrases and solos. There is a big important thing to fix that affects the overall take: Your guitar is not perfectly tuned. This generates a big problems because everything you play sound a bit off compared with the backing. I can judge your bending technique because of it, but I can say that it's also a bit off most of the time.

I can notice a small improvement in your expression techniques in this 4 days, but honestly you need more days of practice to see more important improvements. On the other hand, having this recording every 3/4 days would be awesome to monitor your practice.

This is the list of things to improve:

- Tuning: Always check the tuning of your guitar before starting your practice and each recording.
- Bending: Practice this technique to reach the correct pitches.
- Vibrato: It's weak yet, use the lesson that I suggested to improve it.
- Alternate Picking: Your hands are not perfectly synchronized when you play fast AP licks.

Ok Rhida, I think that you have a very good energy and that you have to keep this motivation to keep on evolving as a guitarist and musician.

Keep on rocking! wink.gif

Gabriel is spot on smile.gif Progress does occur, but we aren't superheroes - you know, there's an old saying here in my country, which was used in fairytales - 'He grew in one year as others would in 7' Unfortunately, that's not possible for anyone, so please keep practicing and post your progress and things will occur in due time smile.gif

Gabi's suggestions are very good and you should follow them closely and enjoy the journey. Each of us has a different rhythm, which is also dictated by experience, so the more you practice in a healthy way, the better you will become. Slow things down and take Gabi's list point by point and what's most important, try to slowly become aware of what's happening to your body when you are playing - are you comfortable, are you tense? When does tension start to happen?

Keep us posted and we'll make sure to help out wink.gif
