Very nice backing Gab!! I hope to record in this one as well, would love to collab with Piotr - it's been way to long! ā¤ļøšŸ‘Š

Right now busy with family/Christmas preparations.

Here's an idea I've been trying tonight, it's a variation on the traditional theme, do you think it works?

Thanks Gab,

I'll stick with it then, maybe it could be the intro section. I was trying to think how to build it into a powerful ending but the track is tricky for me to play along with.

When is the closing date? I won't get much guitar in tomorrow, if any, maybe one boxing day I will but the day after is my last chance as I'm going away until Jan 2nd.

Thanks Gab,

Something I'd like to work on in the future is how to build speed when the backing doesn't change, or when the backing is shot to get more dramatic. I was watching https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=60620 and Dime does it in some sections, I know I'm light years away from him but it got me wishing I understood how to build speed over a slow backing. I tried and my fingers got tangled.

Anyway, sorry to hijack thread, its something for the future.

By the way, you have to watch her disbelief and awe at the 10 minute mark laugh.gif

I'll make a take when I get back

Cheers

Hi Gab, Hi Kris

Iā€™m renovating my new home.
I have very little time to play the guitar right now,
I couldn't participate in the collab of the Christmas holidays.

Happy new year all

The easy answer is to simply start slow and then ramp up the speed of your licks. Of course this means playing sometimes at double the speed that you were playing during the slow bit. This will tangle your fingers up until you get used to it. Try to ram up speed in a small burst then go back to the regular speed.

Thanks buddy

I think it's not just about speed. I have an example solo in my head but can't think who plays it. It's kinda like eight notes at a time getting faster each time and the a bit crescendo.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 etc

Or

1 2 3 4 5 4 3 2 2 3 4 5 6 5 4 3 3 4 5 6 7 6 5 4 4 5 6 7 8 7 6 5 etc

It wouldn't work being that big in this project but it's more about the idea of building solo speed gradually over a static backing.

It's probably far too advanced for me at the moment and because I don't actually know what's being done, it's hard to explain. I hope I can find an example and/or remember who played the one in my head. Maybe we could have some lessons at least levels covering the basics, maybe there are some but I'm fully booked with my time at them moment so it's for the future, for me anyway wink.gif

Cheers

Phil

It's more about "building" speed. You mentioned building up during a slow backing. the trick is to find the right timing to shift between slow and fast. Either way to play a fast passage, one does have to play or sound like one is playing faster which just means more notes in the bar than in the last bar. One can do it by tapping, adding open strings, etc My five note per string tapping techniqe, that weve worked on, is a good example. You can play it at the same relative speed, but sincethere are more notes in the same bar it sounds much faster since it make use of an openstring that you don't have to strike. Hope this makes sense.
Here is an example. I'm playing pretty slow, lots of 8th notes some slow during the bendy bits. Then I speeed it up at the end. Is this what you are talking about? If not share a vid or two if Im just missing it smile.gif

That's very similar to what I have in mind, that very last run is kinda in reverse of what I'm thinking. I don't have it to hand, I'll check later but the example solo I'm thinking could be Jake E Lee from the Bark At The Moon album. Hopefully when I find it it's how I remember it laugh.gif

Should this discussion be taken out of this thread and continued elsewhere?

Cheers

Phil

UPDATE:

This is similar to what is in my head, https://youtu.be/F89-MOy7Xfg?t=151 if you listen, at the 2:38 point Jake E seems to accelerate to a climax. Obviously this wouldn't fit in this backing, but I felt the urge to do a run to blend up to a higher register but my knowledge and skills aren't there yet. That's why i said for future learning I just didn't know what it's called to search for in the lessons when I fancy having a go.

Cheers buddy.

I went a really different direction and did something that's more like a background texture than a solo. I hope it works for the composition as a whole! The good news is that it will fit retty much anywhere! smile.gif

Hi guys! I've been working on this one! It's not an easy track to mix. All those synths combined with clean guitars is giving some EQ headaches! laugh.gif

This tune seems to be one of those tracks that you can listen over and over. It reminds me to Marty Friedman's Scences.

Could you please share your thoughts and let me know if you find your takes in perfect sync?

Could you mix Todd's piece low down in the mix as a background soundscape for a bit of atmosphere?

I think he already did mix me down in the mix as a texture which is what I was thinking would work best smile.gif Seems to go well at the end as a texture. nice!

Wow this is turning out amazing beautiful!! šŸ‘Œ

I think Todd's take works like this. What I would try to experiment with is maybe to add a phaser or similar effect that could take the edge of the high end which in turn could allow you to bring it a little bit forward in the mix (maybe coupled with some slow automated panning).

Posted by: Rids Jan 31 2020, 10:31 AM

Sounds good to me!

Posted by: Phil66 Jan 31 2020, 09:18 PM

Now I've listened on my monitors, I'd say just bring Todd's piece up in the mix a little maybe increasing gradually as it goes along. Just a thought wink.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 31 2020, 10:00 PM

I like kris's idea quite a bit. Some fx should make my bit a bit more "textured". I was thinking it would make a good keyboard type bit. Sorry it's caused so much trouble in the mix!

Well done everybody and extra thanks to Gab for putting together!

Absolutely brilliant everyone, loving every take. Stirling job once again from the mighty skills of Gab.

I don't normally pick a favourite take but if I had to, it would have to be Piotr's probably because he's doing what I eventually want to be able to do by understanding enough to incorporate chords within the solo.

This was one of the best collabs, we should release it on iTunes, maybe a full GMC collab album.

Thanks to all who took part, it's this kind of thing that makes GMC unique and a pleasure to be a part of.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 7 2020, 01:58 AM

This would be cool as a long video on the GMC INSTAGRAM imho!! They let you upload long vids now that get shown as IGTV vids on gram!! A short 60second version might be cool as well, even just the first 60 seconds for the instagram feed. Those vids are limited to 60 seconds.

WOW! GREAT work everyone and AMAZING job by GABE. These are nearly impossible to put to gether as a piece of music and he does it every time. I apologize for going off the reservation and doing something that really didn't fit. Gabe made it work !!!!!! next Time I'll play something a bit more straight forward.

Tddd
