QUICK LICKS #24 ECONOMIC PICKING LOOPING PATTERNS INTRO: This is is straight up ECONOMIC PICKING which is just using two down strokes or up strokes in a row. In this case, we are going to use two downstrokes in a row. It's this technique that allows you to play things would simply be too stressful on the hand if they were to be alternate picked. It's a very simple technique that many folks just never sit down and work on and thus never learn, keeping them from being able to play all manner of music, not just shreddy stuff. There are certain things that just work better using Econ Picking Here is the tablature. Notice that I've marked out UP vs DOWN stroke. The V looking thing means UP STROKE. We are starting on an upstroke here. There is a three note grouping you will notice, don't let it throw you off. Just follow the strike patter as it's shown in the first row on the tab. This one technique is something that separates players. It takes a bit of time and effort so most folks simply can't do it at speed. The first step is being able to do it at all. So play it at any speed you like, with or without the backing. Just give it a shot and do just a little of it every time you practice. As always, start SLOW, don't worry about playing this fast. Just focus on playing it CLEAN Speed is a byproduct of precision. Just like previous quick licks, this lick works as a warmup, practice and solo lick. Don't over stress on getting it just right, or fast enough. This is just about learning the lick. Once you have it you can start it anywhere on the neck to play it in any key. *NOTE: The lick is written to be loopable so you can play it with a backing/drums/metronome/etc.

You are using the Econ picking to great effect. This lick is VERY awkward and hard to play if you try to do it with Alt Picking. I know econ is something people avoid as it makes people feel uncomfortable when it doesn't seem to want to work. You give a great performance here and show that it's quite possible, even in a quick lick!
