QUICK LICKS #24 ECONOMIC PICKING LOOPING PATTERNS

INTRO:

This is is straight up ECONOMIC PICKING which is just using two down strokes or up strokes in a row. In this case, we are going to use two downstrokes in a row. It's this technique that allows you to play things would simply be too stressful on the hand if they were to be alternate picked.

It's a very simple technique that many folks just never sit down and work on and thus never learn, keeping them from being able to play all manner of music, not just shreddy stuff. There are certain things that just work better using Econ Picking

Here is the tablature. Notice that I've marked out UP vs DOWN stroke. The V looking thing means UP STROKE. We are starting on an upstroke here. There is a three note grouping you will notice, don't let it throw you off. Just follow the strike patter as it's shown in the first row on the tab.

This one technique is something that separates players. It takes a bit of time and effort so most folks simply can't do it at speed. The first step is being able to do it at all. So play it at any speed you like, with or without the backing. Just give it a shot and do just a little of it every time you practice.

As always, start SLOW, don't worry about playing this fast. Just focus on playing it CLEAN Speed is a byproduct of precision. Just like previous quick licks, this lick works as a warmup, practice and solo lick. Don't over stress on getting it just right, or fast enough. This is just about learning the lick. Once you have it you can start it anywhere on the neck to play it in any key.

*NOTE: The lick is written to be loopable so you can play it with a backing/drums/metronome/etc.

[b]BACKGROUND / COMMENTS

As mentioned, this is from the GABE COLLAB called "PEARL JAM" as it's based on a Pearl Jam type backing that Gabe created. It's great fun to solo over. If you have not joined in, go join! Here is the link again.

Here is the backing track.

BTW:
Let me know if this one or any of them are just to complicated for you guys or just not what you wanna play. I need to figure out why some like this one get no response.

Bit of a tricky pattern, but I gave it a shot:

NICE!! I was worried that this was just flat out too darn hard. Not to worry, here comes our fave Viking to make it look easy!!! You nailed the big thing that I was hoping for. The Double Down Stroke that makes this an Econ Picking Lick. It is a very tricky pattern and it's very easy to get lost somewhere in the pattern. You hold it together and loop it!!! Very well done. Muting is on point, strikes are clean, just all around well played. Impressive. In other words you just.

LEVELED UP!!!!!

BINGO! This is exactly what I'm looking for. I hope this motivates others to give this a try. I feared that this econ
picking might have thrown everyone a curve ball as so many folks struggle with econ picking. This is a great example of ECON PICKING DONE RIGHT. The purpose of this quick lick is to get your hand some muscle memory on Econ Picking. By the end of learning this, hopefully one would have a good handle on econ picking. Clearly it worked in your case smile.gif You are using the Econ picking to great effect. This lick is VERY awkward and hard to play if you try to do it with Alt Picking. I know econ is something people avoid as it makes people feel uncomfortable when it doesn't seem to want to work. You give a great performance here and show that it's quite possible, even in a quick lick!

Also it's packed with string traverse. Yet another thing that makes some folks run for the hills. Traverse takes practice, like everything else on guitar. But it's very doable once the muscle memory is in place. The purpose of putting so much of it in one spot is to get your fingers used to doing constant string traverse, over and over, in a smooth and even way. That's exactly what you did here smile.gif In short, a very impressive take and you just ..

LEVELED UP!!!!!

YUP!!!! That's ECON PICKING!!! It feels very very odd at first. The hand does not want to pick that way in many cases, just as a matter of instinct. Once has to force it to behave. However, it's worth learning as it makes certain licks easily playable that would otherwise be just flat out hard as heck. Being able to use two down strokes or two up strokes can greatly increase the efficiency of your picking hand. Try this patter on just about any chord shape of two strings and see if you can move it around!! Nicely done!!
You just badged up to 23!! That puts you in the top tier category. Congrats!!

There are a couple extra notes in yours near the end of the pattern (the last four notes in each shape are struck once each instead of the pattern preceeding which is two strikes on the low note and one strike on the higher note. If you get a chance, give that way a whirl to see how it feels), but you got the idea. This is just about making a sort of solo lick out of a simple power chord by just picking the notes instead of strumming them. You can gain some speed by doing the traverse picking as a single motion/sweep style pick instead of picking each one distinctly, but either way works really. You've added another lick to your lick library!!!

You just...LEVELED UP!!!!!!! You remain our TOP DAWG in Quick Licks!

Nice! You got the picking pattern with the econ picking! The speed of this drill is something that can take some time to get. It's hard enough to just play the econ picking pattern. To play it with precision and speed just takes repetition. You can focus on the first position and not change the left hand finger and just play it in a loop. I use this type of econ picking all the time. It's something I had to focus on for quite some time. Once I got it down, I was able to use to create all sorts of licks.
You just ..
