Hopefully me and a friend are going to busker downtown this weekend. Just had a few questions and was wondering if anyone could answer them.

1. Should I be worried about my stuff getting stolen? (guitar, spare amp, microphone, guitar case with cash)
2. What are some good songs everyone would like to hear?
3. I've read that busking doesn't require a license in U.S. because of freedom of speech, anyone sure?
4. All I have is a gibson, so should i borrow my mates epiphone?
5. If an African swallow is carrying a coconut at a speed of...................

thanks smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

while i haven't played "on the streets", i would generally always look after my equipment.. don't worry too much about it, but definately keep an eye out for it.. there are lots of people with very long fingers..

and ya, i think i would definately borrow the epiphone.. no reason to bring the raw meat to the lions den.. if you know what i mean..

I don't know how is in USA but here I've seen many players with some good instruments and nothing happend to them. But you should be aware in case you see some suspicious faces.
About the songs I thing some Beatles songs always are welcome and I think always keep it quiet (I mean, no metal or hard rock). Some jazz tunes would be ok too, or some blusie ones.
About the licence.....I don't know, it's about the country laws.
The option of borrowing an Epiphone would be ok because if something happend to the instrument you won't have to pay too much money since an Epiphone is cheaper than a Gibson but as I said I've seen guys playing a PRS on the street and there was no problem.

I'm luckily not a lawyer and I'm not an American either. But as far as I know you need a license from the copyright holder to perform his or her works. So either play your own stuff or public domain stuff.

And at least in Switzerland I think street music is illegal and you'd have to bother about the police rather than thieves wink.gif

Here in London you have hundreds of musicians on the street and underground stations. Every time I look in their "money box" they have many 10p coins which all together could be £5 in total for 3-4 hours playing. They always look freezing cold and I think it's just not worth it. Only once I saw a blind guy who whistle with his mouth (no real instrument) and his box was full of money smile.gif Doesn't really matter what you play. You can play anything.

I'm sure they'll clear the box after every song so it looks like they haven't gotten any money so far biggrin.gif

Well maybe they do that I don't know. I have read an interview recently with Moby. The guy sold about 50.000.000 records worldwide. One evening he went to the London's Covent Garden (big square with many musicians busking). Journalists asked how many hours he has been there. He said for 6 hours he made £10. haha I couldn't believe it

it is not illegal,

it doesnt even fall under freedom of speech...

in san francisco where i live, you have 100's of people play music...i think depending on where you play though, you might need permission like if you were playing infront of a supermarket or diner

I would definitely get an entry level guitar. It's bit difficult to feel much sympathy for dudes with expensive guitar and designer outfits smile.gif

In Toronto, Canada, one can get license to perform within Metro stations. I understand it doesn't cost very much, they just want to make sure performers are good enough.

My fav. songs are Yesterday and All Along the Watchtower. Any pop songs that you feel confident would be good.
Good luck!

1. Try to keep your stuff near you smile.gif After all you are playing on the street and there may be some "thief" around but its highly unlikely that someone would try to steal from a street musician.
2. Classic rock like Beatles , Rolling Stones , Kansas etc etc is always good to hear...Generally songs that have lyrics , who is going to sing ??
3. I don't really know how it works in US but I heard you need a licence for that in other cities...I guess they want to control who plays there and how well (since street musicians are kinda "famous" for some cities)....
4. If you feel that way and will be more secure , why not...Generally people you are going to entertain won't know which guitar is better or which one is more expensive.

Have fun and tell us how it went! smile.gif

laugh.gif I loved the opening to that movie, I've only seen it once, and it was around the time the movie came out so it was a year or two ago... but yes I want to see it again too.
