I managed to sprain my wrist at Karate last night, which as you all know, is not going to be beneficial to playing the guitar !
So, I wondered how many of you have hobbies, jobs or some other activity which sometimes puts you at risk of injury.. but you still do it because you either love it or you have to ?

I actually many times had to give up ideas to do some cool activities because I feared hands injury. For example 2 years ago I wanted to learn ice skating It was going great until I fell on my wrist. I couldn't play for 2 weeks I should sell my ice skates now that I think about it hehehe

I told You martial arts are risky for guitar players!:P I was in a ancient-dark age-late medieval reenactment group, and of course we battered each other with axes, spears and swords, while wearing "historically accurate" armor, which in case of for example ancient times was none (we reenact Germanic and Dacian barbarians from 2 B.C.). Isn't exactly safe, but I survived - being always concerned with ones fingers can make You a better warrior:P. Some of my friends had to go to hospital few times, and once a girl was hit in her face with a throwing axe

Ouch ! That's exactly what happened to me, I fell on my hands ! I threw a kick and at the same time my opponent kicked my supporting leg and BAM ! It was an accident, but it couldn't have been timed better from his perspective.
Ice skating does look cool though. I always used to think 'What would happen if somebody ran over your fingers ??'

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu --- Love it. Grips play a very important role in the entire game. SO the fingers get worked up a lot and get twisted and in some cases broken. Lately, i had started taping them together to minimize some risks. But injuries are a part of the game and will happen, sooner or later. And it will effect my guitar playing.
If my fingers become useless, I'll start learning drums.

I must object Cosmin!:P Katanas weren't "super swords", the way they were produced was so unique and time consuming because of the terrible quality of Iron that could be mined in Japanese-region. European swords/sabers were in fact of better quality. Sabers used in the XVI-XVII centuries in Eastern Europe should most probably claim the title of "best sword-like weapon of all times" when You take speed and power into consideration. When we are talking about swordsmanship we can also say that Europeans have noting to be ashamed and don't need to envy Japan. Check out this site, it is only the tip of an iceberg http://www.thehaca.com/
Problem with Japanese swordsmanship is that it is so "ritualized" and "home grown" that it isn't "killing art" but "waving Your swords art". Problem with our European swordsmanship is that it was almost totally forgotten, and now we have 400-600 year old books teaching how to use the sword, but it is not always easy to interpret some techniques even though the books are very "resourceful".
Anyway sorry for such long off topic:P

Playing football (soccer for my american friends ) can be dangerous cause you can fall on your hands, but the chance isn't that high. I avoid playing goalie, though I really like it. Oh, and I love getting crazy in the mosh pits at concerts, and a couple of times I fell or some guys ran into my arm and my wrist hurt really bad after that. But giving that up? No way!

I could not find thlink ,but on KPTS I watched a special on the making of a samuri sword , and it was cool a true samuri sword will sell these days for six figures and in the old days they rated them 1 2 3 4 or a 5 ( this refers to how many torso's it could cut in one swing)and in this a real samuri-sliced an arrow shoot at him in two(freakin awsome)oh ya they showed it in slow motion and he did!

Amazing feats here, people! At least I call them feats. I don't like living life on the edge; call me a wuss, I don't care. I like to stay safe because I have a fear of getting hurt - I don't like feeling pain .... Who does, sicko? But I mean I just like to do things that probably won't cause injuries. But I guess even driving a car or flying in a plane is a bet with one's life. You can't avoid stuff all the time. I got hurt a few times when I played baseball as a kid. My general hobbies are music and computers.
Just for the record, skydiving has never appealed to me! I hate heights. However, I have dreamed about going to space and orbiting the earth = spacewalking. It seems there are no heights out there. You're just there.

I'm not brilliant with heights.. but I'd rather be looking down than looking up. I get this weird sensation when I'm stood next to a really tall building. I cannot look up because it feels me with fear and makes me feel unbalanced like the sky is falling on me and the earth is falling away behind me. Does anyone else get this ?

No I haven't
But my skydive instructor has height sickness. But the thing is when your are standing in the doorway of a plane at that height she said she didn't feel the high sickness any more. Nice to know isn't? So just try it. She felt it only on more "normal" heights like standing on a 10 stairs building, that is "close" to the ground so to speak.
I know scuba divers who where diving over a riff and that suddenly goes steep down for more than 100 meter and they suffered height sickness at that time looking down

Yes, it's quite a misunderstood art. You need good upper body strength with endurance legs. Leg's are also trained to be in sync and with precision jumping. You notice most people lead with one leg as they jump, we jump and plant with both while mantaining balance with the upper body, then normally relax rolling into the shoulder to take off the impact.

Nope, lol, when I was 13, attempted to flip off a friend's one story house roof onto a tramp. After the bounce off the tramp your spos to jump and roll onto the ground, however I misjumped and just went splat! I broke my tibus leg bone doing this stuff.
I still have a love for all extreme sports!

Well I put a staple through my index finger a couple of years ago while hanging up the holiday Christmas lights. Ouch! Not sure if that qualifies as a hobby but I'd hate to see what a table saw could do to the un-attentive. My other hobby/activity is golf which really isn't very hazardous unless the rest of your foursome is really bad. And then there's motorcycling. Even though I miss my bike, I'm kind of glad I sold it cause I tend to have an over active wrist which was getting me into trouble.

I got a HUGE giggle out of this post. Having grown up in the states, in the South in particular, guns have always just sort of been around. Seems almost un-natural not to have at least one so you can go shooting with your buddies Otherwise you have to rent one at the gun range and who wants to do that?

The name of that 12 gauge cracks me up, its called the Mossberg "Persuader" I can just imagine what a TV advert would sound like, "The Persuader... for when verbal warnings aren't enough."
My choice of ammo depends on what I'm using it for. When I'm at the indoor ranges I like to use 3 inch magnum slugs and/or 00 buckshot, for two reasons:
1- To get accustomed to the MASSIVE recoil - if I can handle that I can handle anything 2- The sound concussion is so enormous everybody stops what they're doing. This is done usually in retaliation to the dude in the adjacent lane with the high caliber revolver... "Whose is bigger now bitch?! ...bahahaha!!" Yes, I'm an enormous ass. Sounds like you are riot on the range Bringing double ought buck out for target practice. Nice! If you lived closer we could go shooting! I think we should invite our GMC buddies over from Europe for "Gun Day" and cut them all loose on the range with our gear. Now that would be fun!
For those not living in the states. You don't need a license or anything to shoot guns on a range. You can shoot pretty much anything anybody hands you which is great and one of the wonderful things about the states So usually when you go shooting with buddies, you swap guns and try everything at least once.
