I'm working on a lesson with legato and Alt picking.
I'm finding the there are parts where I don't necessarily need to pick the note when I change string but I need to on the same string if the direction of the notes change. Is this the root to bad technique or is it a case of pick where you have to? Here is the part of the lick showing where I pick -------------------- My SoundCloud

You could play this exercises without picking any note, and it would be ok. You can also pick the notes that you marked. Both ways would sound and feel different so I think that you should master the two possibilities.

I find the quality of the note decreases dramatically when I'm relying on the slide at that particular point, I'll practice maybe using more pressure and see if that helps

It is not a bad technique at all! It is one possible way to play such a lick, the question is: how do you want it to sound. You can play it picking every single note and here you can even chose between alternate picking or economy picking, you can use hammer ons/pull offs every now and then, you can use slides, you can not pick a single note and play everything legato... it is only a question of how you want it to sound like. All those techniques are good ones, there is no bad choice, they all will result in different sounds, thats it.
