This is the 11th day without guitar so far, the reason for that is that one day I did weight lifting and alot of bending and vibrato in standard E tuning, I'm used to standard/open D/C tuning atm. I did not warm up properly and I havent done any of these things for months. I have only played acoustic with lower tuning the past couple of months, not much bending there.
It might be something called repetetive strain disorder, a mild one in this case.

The day after this I felt a little stiff in my fretting arm, so I decided to take a day off. The next day I started to feel slight pain from my elbow to my hands. It wasnt really much pain, but it was uncomfortable.
It remained the same for about 6 days, no better no worse. Then the 7th and 8th day it got better and after that till today it seems to have healed very fast, though its still not at 100%.

I just came home from the doctor, he have played guitar himself so he knew what it was all about, very nice guy btw. I said that I didnt think this was very serious because after all I stopped using my arm before I even felt pain and I havent used it for 11 days and it seems to be almost 100% healed now. He said that some people have to stop playing for life and that it started out the way it did with me, but I'm not stupid, I will of course take it chill and not play untill I'm a 100%.

The doctor suggested that I started to play very slow and easy for like 5 minutes a day, and also jogging, because it gets the blood stream flowing. Stretching aswell of course. No need for any medication aslong as I do this and take it piano.
I'm pretty sure I will be fine, but it might take two more weeks or something. Damn, one month without playing, madness!

The three first days I went crazy, but you know, they say that if you are trying to quit smoking, all you need to do is not smoke for three days. I dont smoke, but damn, the fourth day I didnt feel like playing at all for some reason, I guess it works.

I remember reading somewhere that one time Kris couldnt play for 6 months because of a injury ohmy.gif
I'd love to hear GMC'ers experience about these things, what should I do, what shouldnt I do? What did you do? Will I be fine?

I'll be back soon, I'm off for a quick jog. Thanks.

(Damn it sucks only typing with one hand)

Robin thats terrible m8 sad.gif sorry to hear that.

Luckily enough I`ve never suffered from an injury like this, possibly come close a few times, I had an ache in my left arm from the elbow to the wrist once but after a couple of days it had gone away, I just make sure I do a bit of warm up everytime I play now.
Get better soon m8

Thanks, I will.

I do not feel any pain at all now though, just sometimes a slight tickle in one spot on my arm. Tomorrow I will start working on playing guitar, but only smaaall doses the first week.

I’m going through something similar… I started feeling pain in my left hand 3-4 weeks afo and it kept getting worse and worse. I decided to stop guitar for a week and if it wasn’t better by then I’d see a doctor. Then it got worse, the tendon on the back of my knuckle separated and was going off to the side of my knuckle instead of over the top. I saw two doctors, the first had no idea. The hand specialist said I have a torn flexor in my left hand, 6 weeks in a cast might heal it, if that doesn’t then I will need surgery. 3 days after I got my left hand in a cast, my right hand started bothering me and now I have the same problem in that hand. I’m going back to the doctor today to see if they can figure out what’s wrong with me and why my hands are falling apart. I’m one week into the cast, and haven’t played guitar in more than 3 weeks. It’s been tough, but it’s more important to get back to 100% before I think about playing again.

I also thought that I had a RMI before I went to the doctor, but now think it might be something more serious, since it is in both hands.

Good luck with your injury, make sure you get back to 100% before you start up again! It sounds like you’ll be fine, just take it easy for a while. You don’t want to re injure yourself.

Keep us updated.

I am very sorry to hear that. I'm glad I'm so lucky that my injury isnt that serious. Mine havent gotten worse, only better, specially the last 4 days, its almost healed but I need to build my strength slowly.

How did you get your injury? Guitarplaying?

Good luck man. Even if it takes a year to get well, be patient!

My advice is to seek professional help - we don't know enough to help you. You are very wise to not play when it hurts - that would be very dangerous.

I know you went to a doctor - but I really suggest that you go to chiropractor or similar. Doctors usually can't do much more than recommend pills (etc) for these kind of things. You need someone who can treat your arm and feel the injury.

I'm glad you are starting to feel better.

Actually, my injuries came on without doing anything at all. Which is why it's so frustrating. My next appointment is in an hour, so I'll have an update this afternoon.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Sorry to hear about this Robin and Bedlam and hope that you both recover fully and quickly. I think Kris is 100% correct about getting professional rather then lay advice for something like this. What we can offer though are our thoughts and wishes to you both.

Cheers,
Tony

Quoted for truth.

I don't really have a lot else to say, but since I quoted Kris talking about chiropractors, I have to tell a personal story so you can see how useful they can be. When I was 10 years, I got really injured when playing footbal, and I went to the hospital, all kinds of experts looked at me, and they were like "nothing is broken, rest for a while and it'll be fine". It didn't become fine just like that, so after a while I went to a chiropractor, and they said that my hip joint was half way out of where the joint should be. ((I don't know what it's called in english, in swedish it's called "ur led") So, I got a lot better after that, and if it hadn't been for that, I don't know if I would even be able to walk now. So yeah, go to an expert!

Sorry to hear about your physical problems guys, I hope you get better soon!

I've been missing out on playing the guitar myself as I hurt my neck and it's radiating into my left arm. Hurts like hell to move my left arm or neck. I had to cancel my first guitar lesson today due to the injury. I look forward to my weekly lesson very much and to have to cancel it because I'm in so much pain hurts even more.

Bad thing about this whole deal is that I went to the DR about this today(2nd visit in two mnonths abaout the same problem) and I got an idiot for a DR. Well he wasn't even a DR he was a Phyicians assistant and was totally clueless. When I made the appointment they didn't tell me it was with the PA, this was the first and last time I'm going to that office. The guy didn't even check me out all he did was ask me some questions that didn't even pertain to this problem and then he was walking out of the office saying "well you have a follow up appointment on this date" I said hey what about my neck, he said "what about it"?? I said what are you going to do about it, he said "nothing, I'm not going to make a big deal about something that will go away eventually". DOH! Can you believe a so called medical professional treating a patient that way? I was so pissed off I told him that he was an idiot and a moron and that I'm never goign there again, what a total waste of my time!

im sorry to hear that man, i hope you recover fast so you get back on the road. Remember that you can still improve musically with Andrew's lessons wink.gif.

You know, as mean or bad as this sounds, sometimes id wish i could get a minor injury so i couldnt play for like 1 week, that way i could dedicate all that to theory because ive always wanted to get really good at it, problem is, if i can play, i wont study theory./...

In college I broke my left wrist playing baseball and couldn't play for 8 weeks. I was so distressed that I re-strung my guitar so could play lefty, Hendrix style. Now I play righty and a little lefty, so if there's an ambidextrous guitar out there with two necks opposite each other, please send me the link. That would be cool to play!

I have actually tried some one-handed playing, only using the right hand with hammer ons and pull offs. Works great with open tuning.

Sorry to hear about your neck, I hope you make a fast recovery.

Update:

My hand specialist says my right hand is ok, not screwed up like the left one. It's just been overused and needs some rest. I'd go into detail, but it sucks typing with one hand.

So, in 5 weeks I get this cast off and see if I need surgery.

My membership renewal is up in 2 weeks, so I guess I won't be renewing until I know that I don't need surgery or until I am completely recovered from surgery. Anyone know if I can still participate in the forums?

Until then, I'll will be working on my right-hand tapping wink.gif

My advice is to seek professional help - we don't know enough to help you. You are very wise to not play when it hurts - that would be very dangerous.

I know you went to a doctor - but I really suggest that you go to chiropractor or similar. Doctors usually can't do much more than recommend pills (etc) for these kind of things. You need someone who can treat your arm and feel the injury.

I'm gonna go to a physical therapist asap, and today I started taking the pills the doctor gave me. I suppose this is more serious than I expected.

Btw Kris, I remember reading somewhere that one time you couldnt play for 6 months. How did it happen, and did you get 100% well after 6 months? I dont mind waiting 6 months aslong as I know that I will get 100% well.

One thing really sucks though, in exactly one month my band is recording a demo. Guess we just need to cancel it.
