GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Tremolo Systems

Hey guys, I just have 1 question.
I'm thinking of buying a 2nd hand guitar, the one im looking at is a strat style. It has a standard tremolo system and i just want to know if doing a light vibrato or whammy harmonics with the bar would get the guitar out of tune or damage it.
cheers

You can't damage guitar with using tremolo! smile.gif

Going out of tune? Yes - if you don't have locking nuts which are very rare on Strats!

I'm not sure! I don't think so.

But you know if it's a standard Fender tremolo than you won't be able to do big lifts with it. I mean it's not like Floyd or Edge tremolo. Those are created to do crazy stuff on it but the Fender tremolos have a small range of moving.

If you set it up right you will be able to get light expression vibrato out of it, but forget divebombs and the like, they are just not designed for it, although some people have had success setting them up for this, I never have.

Ok - Andrew confirmed my thoughts! I am not a big expert on Fenders but i knew their tremolos are "weak"! smile.gif

You won't damage it (if used the way you described). That's for sure!
If you have trouble with the guitar going out of tune, you could put a little graphite on the nut (where the string lies), that will help the strings to not get stuck. That works fine for me, so imo you don't need a locking nut smile.gif
