I'm glad you posted this Muris because it reminds me of things that I have been thinking about recently. I have two sons, one is 7 and the other one is 5. I don't want them necessarily to grow up in the "computer age". Meaning that I want them to experience other things in life like fishing, camping, outdoors stuff etc. You know, kind of like what it was like for me before the Internet was even created.

I know that I can't totally prevent it and I don't necessarily want to do that either. But, I also don't want them to become addicted to Internet and new technology so much either. I know that they will experience Internet and all of that stuff, but I sure would rather them say to me "hey Dad, how about we go for a bike ride or play catch or something like that rather than "hey dad, let's play this new video game that I just bought" - you know.

What do you think? How can I teach them to balance their life so that they want to do things other than play on computer? It sure would be nice to see kids these days do all of the things that I and my father did before all of this technology. It seems to be a lot harder these days to get them interested in some of those things rather than Internet and video games.

What do you all think about this?

Well Jeff, im 18 and i as you can see im a regular internet user- but i also get out alot socialising and also doing lots of activities with a club (flying, shotting, gliding and outdoorsy stuff) and also i play an instrument....i forget which one though...

Thing is- back when Dad had lots of time to spend with us we'd play outside, he'd watch us ride our bikes up and down the street (i say us - i have a 21 year old brother) and generally we'd play alot outside.

Then came the computer...

With changing work commitments my dad would spend less time with us- though he did introduce me to that club ^^ and gave me lifts twice a week to get there. Between times my brothers ( thats right i also have a younger brother who is 13 now) and i would take turns playing computer- my dad didnt really take us out anymore and the people who were most affected by it were my two brothers.

I did play the computer now and again, but for my brothers it was all they had. Soon we all had a computer in our rooms, then several years later they both got hooked on internet gaming, like seriously hooked. Though my older brother (having lived a life before gaming) has social skills and a nice girlfriend, i'm really concerned about my little brother- gaming is his life. He revolves his day around when he can play World of Warcraft- he wakes up, eats, plays WOW, goes to school, gets home, plays WOW, eats, plays WOW, sleeps- thats his typical day (and weekend just subtract the school part).

IMO the best you can do as a father is introduce your children to different aspects of life- never force though. I would have loved the chance to play guitar as a younger kid, but my parents weren't the kind of people who would spend money on something i might not enjoy. There are literally thousands of things you could get out there and do with your kids, write them down and get out there and do them, just try and realise when you are signing them up for long term commitments (year membership with a club etc, might want to discuss it with them and find out what they really think first) and try and realise which of the things they dislike doing and dont play the "i've payed so much to allow you to..." card. Best thing you can give your kids are opportunities to find something they love.

Jeff you're a nice guy and i'm sure you've got all these things covered, just adding my 2 cents wink.gif
