GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Has Grunge Killed Metal?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 18 2012, 05:04 PM

Hi there!! I found that phrase in http://%5byoutube%5do8fvYl4Hj2g%5b/youtube%5dthat I started about solos in meanstream music and I decided to start a new thread to discuss this accusation.... smile.gif

what are your thoughts??

Posted by: The Uncreator Jan 18 2012, 05:21 PM

Not even close in my opinion.

Last time I checked, Hundreds of thousands people showed up at Rock In Rio for Maiden. Wacken sells out every year, and there are so many good bands coming out right now.

Metal is well alive, and pumping out amazing music.

+1 for that post smile.gif Are there any grunge bands that survived the 90s ? There are so many good metal bands coming up from everywhere so Metal is still alive in my opinion!

nah - there are still die-hard fans of polka - you can't kill genres - you can only dethrone them from the main stream. But even then, they always resurface at some point cuz...well, metal is cool. You just can't argue that cool.gif

Was gonna say the same...Wacken sells out extremely fast every year, usually faster than Rock am Ring. And usually Metal albums climb pretty high in the charts here in Germany. Maiden, Metallica, Blind Guardian usually even make it to Number 1. But please don't start to dream about "Germany, the metal wonderland where Metal is folk music" laugh.gif We are ruled by Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyoncé and the lot...but the resistance might be larger than in the USA (for example) laugh.gif

Come on you really like the stuff from Dieter? smile.gif By the way i like your cover, it sounds really cool.

Modern Talking is okay for me on partys but do you like the other music from Bohlen (Piedro Lombardi, Andrea Berg, Mark Medlock ...). I hardly believe that smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Jan 18 2012, 10:00 PM

I don't like any of his music, to be honest laugh.gif
I made this cover for my buddy Karl, the song was number 1 Germany when he was born wink.gif

Being here in the states, I saw the abuse that Metal and Metal bands took after things got to the point where most Metal bands started looking and sounding the same (big selling/sellout bands I mean) just before grunge took over and anything you heard on the radio with a guitar was being played by a guy in a flanel shirt.

Thank God for Europe where Metal has gone to thrive and morph and fray in to infinite sub-genres and scenes (Swedish Melodic Death Metal, Finnish Black Metal, etc.). This then feeds back here to the states where hard core fans incorporate bits and pieces of that in to their own work. Not to say Europe isn't packed with crap music, as Christian says, it's way packed. But yeah, the resistance is bigger there.

The good news is that YOU CAN"T KILL METAL, you can put lipstick on it and call it glam and make it work for a living (e.g. commercial viability), you can force it underground where it forgets what the lipstick was about and goes back to leather and denim, but you just can't kill it. It's eternal smile.gif

I really dig metal.. However I have to admit that I don't get the stuff where the vocals are really just screaming in the ultra low raspy "death growl". I guess I am just getting old cuz when I hear that I can't hit the off button fast enough. Dio on the other hand... wink.gif

Cheers!

Has grunge killed metal ? No, it just diverted the attention away from metal for a short while before it died of natural causes..

Metal, on the other hand, kept going the same as it always did. Those that always loved metal never stopped listening just because the media did.

They say guitar solos went away... not for me, they didn't cool.gif People just stopped listening to the bands that played them, that's all.

Then you get to the late 2000's and the last decade and everyone's saying 'metal's coming back'.. what are they talking about ? It never went away ! biggrin.gif

I love both genres, but I don't think neither harmed each other wink.gif different audiences for each and they both have awesome elements which helped me a lot in my creative endeavors.

hey guys! these posts are really cool... I think that I agree with all of you, but the discussion turned very interesting. As Todd said I think that Europe is now the place where you can find the most awesome metal bands... and sincerely it happens to me the same than Cosmin, I love both styles!
