I personally don't do this, although many people swear by it.

To me, any difference in sustain in negligible - however if you are experiencing a lot of breakage at the saddles then this method is worth looking into as it decreases the angle of the string as it reaches the saddles.

One advantage some argue is that the string holder stops forcing the body as tension is decreased. Though I've never seen it, I read that in time that part starts to move (as an alternate solution to wraparound is its advised not to lower it too much).

What I noticed on a friends guitar was the high freq.s responce slightly decreased (sweeter sound or muddy if the guitar isn't already bright)) while the string felt a bit looser. But I did like resting my hands on the strings a lot as I'm not used to the gap of the bridges design.
