Apr 28 2009, 07:07 PM	Learning Rock Star Posts: 502 Joined: 6-February 09 From: israel	i was jamming today trying to learn technical difficulties(with little success i might add) so i started browsing youtube looking at one little kid after another playing it. that it hit me that lots of people can play it and if i practice enough time i can to, and i thought to myself if i were to ask Paul Gilbert right now what is he more proud of, being able to play technical difficulties or writing it, im sure it would be the latter. anyways im sure every one here is past the playing just to be able to play better and impress other people(of the other sex mainly) and we all aim to be great guitar players and musicians and we all including me should start treating speed as a tool and not as a final goal. i feel like i am obsessing over my speed(or lack of it) to much and forgot why i even picked up the guitar. as a tool to write songs and to play and to express myself not to enter a never ending rat race in which somebody will always be faster and better than me. i hope it will be an inspiration for you all just as its been for me. Someones goal is maybe different from other, but enjoyment in music is something that we all share. Becoming good at instrument can be an obsession, and I don't mean like a negative thing, many great players were obsessed by guitar and guitar playing/practicing, and the results are sure visible. So it is important to stay honest with yourself and music you love, and just try to be happy playing the guitar. Everything else will come in time. But it's only one tool, there are so many other techniques that can bring the guitar to life and all these techniques just come with time, patience and dedication. Plus - you're right. Being able to play something like Technical Difficulties is an achievement, but being able to write something like Technical Difficulties is so much more rewarding. As a musician, speed should be used as a tool whereas the goal should be to express yourself and make music. Just like alot of other tools, speed (mainly the AP warp speeds most players like to achieve) can be a semi-goal of your playing, or a tool you'd like to update once in a while. With greater recourses, more effect pedals, more diffrent techniques, more diffrent guitars, more licks, more diffrent tunings, more theory knowledge and higher achieveble speeds, you increase your arsenal of tools. Once you have "the tool" of speed (having mastered the speed you'de like) you must learn to use it wisely so it adds to the musical experience you want to move others with and to express yourself with, instead playing fast to impress people. Said otherwise : you should use speed to make music, not make music to use speed. It is perfectly possible to make good music without using 16th notes at all, but it is also possible to pick very fast, and that it will not at all sound musical.
