Slash just posted something on Facebook that makes a lot of sense:

"After all these years, I've come to the conclusion: 80% of your sound is u, not your gear. For better or worse. Iii|; )' "

How to you guys feel about this?

Well my gear is kinda awesome and i dont sound great so for me it true ;P

Also Steve Vai told a story about this too in his masterclass.
Eddie van Halen came to Steves home, walked into his studio, picked up his guitar, plugged it into his amp, with his settings..
but he didnt sound anything like Vai.. he still totaly sounded like Eddie van Halen tongue.gif

I love that smilie Slash always uses btw Iii|; )

Slash's signature equipment...

Slash signature Les Paul "Gold Top" or BC Rich Handcrafted Mockingbird SL, and the Marshall Slash JCM 2555SL, sounds killer!

He's just saying that will only get you 20% of the way, lol.
(if your looking at the glass - half full)

but yeah it's true... feeling, techniques, rhythm and timing all come down to the player and are totally unique!

ps. I still don't plan on using a guitar which can't be tuned thou.

How to you guys feel about this?

I think it depends on the gear you already have. From there on, sure.

I definitely agree. Give me professional cooking knives and I won't necessarily make you a great meal. On the other hand, having sharp ones will make my job easier and give me a better flow. It's definitely a compromise.

It's definitely true... it's like you can dress in different clothes that give a certain flavour but the most important factor is you. The body doesn't change. smile.gif

I've also heard the story of Vai and EVH, and the lead guitar player in my band and I also switched equipment once to verify or falsify this (not that I'm comparing us to Vai and EVH ph34r.gif ), and we still sounded pretty much the way we sounded before... smile.gif

human gives character to gear, not vice versa. That's definitely true.
