Don't ask me why I'm watching this video laugh.gif ok I'll tell you, I'm transcribing the solo as part of my ear training with Gab. And I'll be honest with you, I was 9 years old, and I was a fan for a few weeks, I had all the clothing rolleyes.gif

You can watch the video until about 1:54 or you can click here to go straight to the solo >>> https://youtu.be/mEhkM3X_teQ?t=114

The question is, have you ever seen a Strat with those pickups and more to the point, why are there two pickup selector switches?

Widerange humbuckers, both on strat and tele in the video.

I actually have a lot of experience with that tele's newer mexican made version. The wide-range was developed to compete with the traditional humbuckers and since this happened in the 70's its likely Fender is promoting them through this band.

The originals magnets aren't been made anymore so todays widerange HB's aren't considered as good as the vintage but I still like them. The name sort of describes its sound compared to a traditional PAF but its flatter and string separation to me is better.

My guess is the extra switch makes series-parallel rather than split but hard to say. This guitar can be considered experimental for that era.

The neck pkup on the Strat isn't a 'wide-range'. The pole pieces are all in one row. Check out the clip at 1:56. Probably a Gibson HB(?).
Why two selector switches ... who knows. It's a totally customized, late 60s or early 70s Strat.

The 'Rollers were huge here too!

Correct, I also noticed the single at the bridge. Today many would consider a higher output PU there but my guess is the player probably aimed for an acoustic guitar-like sound by blending that single bridge with the HB's. I'm guessing that might be the purpose of the second switch.

At 9 years old I was a fan, until I was 9 and a 1/2 laugh.gif I've never really thought of them as more than a novelty band but looking at that documentary they did make an impact.

My guess is a PAF in the neck. Quite a common addition in the early 70's.
As for the switching? Series, Parallel, Coil Splits? Could be any number of options!

I don't think they played on their records so who knows what it may have sounded like - ?
Looks cool though.
