Ok GMC players the final mix is ready First I'd like to thank to all the participants. We have some interesting solos here and a variety of styles. I hope you don't mind if I get a little hard on you, but I will try to keep things as much as possible and real. Let's begin:
1. CRAZYFRET Nice effort. I like the minimalistic approach you did, but not exactly the way you did it . I also liked the sound, it is very concrete and nice crunchy color. Timing needs to be somewhat better, and also it would be better if you played some kind of phrase here and there to add some theme to your solo. But the solo can pass as a funky repetitive solo and that I appreciate. Keep practicing those bends also, make them more stable, and watch out how you end your solos. Ending a solo on the root note requires some interesting melody before that has some connection with the overall theme of the solo in order to sound excellent. But nevertheless, I think you are getting there. Keep rockin' 2. JOEY Hmm, this sure was interesting, a repetitive solo that follows the E7 blues progression with reverb. Nice idea and relatively decently played. I think I know what your thought were on this one, you wanted something that goes along with the groove, and you did it. What I don't like is it sounds little muddy and sloppy. I would put there less reverb and a touch of chorus to really pump the atmosphere but that''s just my taste. Probably the biggest problem I've got listening ti your solo is that it is not a solo for me, it is more like rhythmic riff for the backing guitar. But don't be fooled - it is a good and groovy one 3. FATBOT Wow,man, whats up with that distortion You really add some interesting effects on top, but in my opinion a little too much. dist and a flange must be a little lower for recording in order to sound good regardless of genre. Solo is good, you have an interesting aggressive style there and some good exercises in your fingers. But you must learn to connect those exercises better and make a good melody solo out of it. Again technique is great - but better phrasing and a sense for a melody needed. No worries it will all come in time. Glad to see that you are a good perspective player with a style in a making too. 4. SMELLS Very nice smells indeed I like the sound and the solo too. It sounds bluesy, I can see that you are influenced by the blues Nice thinking and rhythmic phrasing. The vibrato needs to be more in the groove, and some of your notes are little muddy. Remember - it is always better to be precise than fast And I think you are aware of that. Also the solo follows some logic, and it keeps the listener interested, but a little something is missing, maybe too much separation on the last theme, it seems to me like it is glued on but that's just me. All in all very well. 5. COFFEMAN I smell some another brick in the wall solo? Just kidding it reminds me on on it a little but hey that's a good thing. I like that intro feel, those mini licks that fits together very nice. It is not easy to put bunch of licks together and sound good and you did it. BUT in the second part somewhere in the middle the licks came out little unconnected and muddy. What was that? Also you definately need some serious bending practice, that bend in the lick near the end is very sloppy for me. Other than that it is great, you got in the groove, recorded some fine licks and it all sounds like a solo in the end.Nicely done man. 6. USAMAN Looks like someone has been practicing some pentatonic ha? I like it man, but will you fix that buzzing distortion please Sure the dist is great, but it really needs to sound more concrete. If you don't have a good equipment don't worry - just roll off some of the dist or even play clean and you will surely get a better recording as well. The solo itself is nice, little major lick at the start, then the classic workouts, then some 16th notes, nicely done - but you have to be more precise. Try connecting those exercises better, and find a way to make your solo have an overall theme and logical progression from point A to point B. Also when finishing a phrase, make sure to put your root note with some more style, not just in a lets-get-back-too-root-in-8th-notes way. More practicing on those bends as well. Overall nice use of pentatonics and decent sounding solo. 7. JVM And our first clean braveheart A proof that a clean solo can sound interesting as well and more quality then a dist one. Nicely played, you kept it simple - i like that, interesting theme and a very good clean sound. Almost all the notes came out good and that is I think the most important thing of all Also you played little with a minor as well as pentatonic, not going far way, one position maybe two - I say that is good enough and interesting enough. Occasional uses of slides, nice "sheep" vibratos and some bluesy intervals makes this solo very good in my book. Nice style 8. ILUHA Nice sound Iluha, decently defined. I like those hammerons and pulloffs, they really add a bit of bluesy flavor to the solo. I like that you tried to make a logical progression in the solo, for example intro-theme-conclusion. You have done it wisely my friend, but what's up with those 8th triplets at the end? They sound too sloppy, must fix that. Practice and you'll do them right though, no worries. Also adding some vibrato here and there would be nice. all in all you have a decent understanding of how solo needs to sound like and that is a good thing. All these thoughts are my own and are subjective. I must say that this is my opinion and looking for yours too. Feel free to correct me if you think I've made a mistake somewhere and fell free to give your own comments. Oh, and keep rockin'! PS See you an a New blues collab! Off course everything written in my comments was written in best intention to help the members! I've tried to keep my comments as on the uploads board - more advices on errors and how to fix them and not too much compliments. And since this is my first collab, I'm still learning and off course open to all suggestions and comments. It will get better in time. Also I will gladly help any of the participants if they have some specific questions about their technique and playing. Thanks Ivan, I can actually play that last legato speed run quite cleanly, I just get excited when I record and mess up, also why I don't do much vibrato, which normally I got a good vibrato but when I record, I can't move my finger right, I guess I just need more recording experience My guess is that too man. When I wrote sloppy, I didn't meant that you don't know how to play it, I meant that it sounded sloppy on the recording for me. I personally think that you can play this one with a little bit of effort, since it is not a difficult passage. As for recording, try to record yourself as much as you can. If you don't like the result, try again and so on. With recording the main thing is to not get yourself tensed up and nervous. After a while of repetitive playing it is better to relax and play something else for a while then to push, because mistakes are quite often then. Little tip - you can glue on the parts of the solo that are not very good played. Off course it is better to play them at once, but if for some reason you can't manage it, just glue it on. You have an understanding about solo structure, so my guess is that you would do it properly. Hey Ivan, what do you think I can do to give my solo a little more structure and flow? I think a large thing I need to work on is rhythm - I seem to be stuck in an 8th note thing and I very rarely pull out a triplet or 16th note thing, even if I'm more than capable of playing that fast. Any tips? Hm, the solution can be in different places really. Based on your solo here, I see you have a good rhythm FEEL. It is just a matter of practice in the rhythm section. There's a lot of rhythm exercises, and most of them are focused on your right hand technique, for example the alternate picking. Must practice that, I suggest Muris or Kris lessons on alt picking. Work with some legato patterns as well. If you've already done that and for example know considerable number of runs but don't know how to throw them in a solo while playing, then maybe the problem is elsewhere - have you learned your scales good? Knowing where the notes are at any given time can be pretty demanding but very rewarding since you can than work your way on the fretboard much more easily. Little advice, if you can do the 16th note triplets for example, take a simple progression, and record over it. Then listen to it (or upload here if you can), and analyze it. I can't stress out enough the importance of you hearing your solos and playing from the speakers while you are not playing the guitar. When we play we don't actually hear ourself that good, as we are concentrated on playing more. 1. Just about any exercise with a metronome will for sure improve your timing in a long run. Continue to practice at this rate and you will soon do some interesting solo passages. It is important that you feel the groove and know where to put your notes, and I think you know that - it's just a matter of your determination and will for practice before you can do a great soloing.
2. Phrase and lick development (Well, try some of Muris's solo lessons, maybe they can be demanding at fast tempo, but don't worry, try to analyze what he does, and learn those licks from tabs or GP so you can make your own combinations of similar licks. Learning licks is interesting and fun). WHen you learn them, come back and maybe try the new blues collab or upload some soloing on the upload board so we can hear it. 3.
