GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ How Can I Get This Sound?

Posted by: JVM Sep 21 2009, 08:02 AM

Hi guys, I'm doing an alternate take kind of "remix" on a song and I'd really like to add a nice sounding slide or bluesy guitar with a sound similar to John Lennon's Old Dirt Road, what a great sound!

Any tips on how to achieve this? I love that silky smoothness.

Humbuckers in neck position, heavy compressor and a quite small room reverb will do, I guess.

Thanks for the advice. I have a strat, so no humbuckers to be had. It also seems like there's a really slight wah in there, or maybe it's just slide hmmm. I'ma adjust my tremolo to go down only and put some new strings on before I make the recording, in a couple days I guess.

Staffy is right on this one. I would add to experiment a bit with Vox modeling for that clean tone.

Sounds like a slap back delay in there to me.

Lennon loved a light flange effect for vocal doubling. Not sure he used it elsewhere, but you could try that or a rotary speaker effect if you have something like that in your bag of tricks.

If I record through my amp I may be in luck, I have a mesa with el84s that has a great clean channel, not exactly voxy, but pretty similar. I may end up just doing it with the toneport though, we'll see.

Here's what I've been working on. Im kind of fishing for ideas in these takes so let me know what you like or don't. Need to work on that guitar sound more I think, but it does sound nice now.
