In this topic we're getting listed a lot of great guitarists, since not many of you know them all it's always interesting to check the list. So you'll expand your knowledge of guitarplayers which could only turn out in a positif way.
Ok.... I will start
Luca Turilli
Les Paul - inventer of the electric guitar pickup and the solid body guitar. He invented pretty much every analog effect + multi track recording.
Chet Atkins - just a master of the guitar
Pete Townsend - Great show, the real master when it comes to smashing guitars and destroying amps + drumsets at the same time
The Edge - amazing when it comes to bowing/sustaining and delay riffs.
Allan Holdsworth - pretty selfexplainatory if you've ever heard him.
Jimi Hendrix - the inventer of rock. Put his guitar on fire and played on it. Great guitarist and composer, considering how new the electric guitar actually was.
George Lynch - Pretty famous for his dissonant riffs and use of tritonus in metal pretty smoking technique as well.
Ron Thal (AKA Bumblefoot) selfexplainatory, his guitar is a combination of a bumblebee, a foot and a guitar... he's also a great guitarist and has played with Guns and Roses per example.
Eric Clapton no need for explaination
Christophe Godin - the remaker of songs, plays Highway to hell in jazz, sweeps the chordprogression of little wing and sings at the same time... just sick.
Kirk Hammet (spelling?) Guitarist of metallica
Guthrie Govan This man, musician, guitarist... is like all of the others mentioned combined...
Paul Gilbert master of alternate picking and string skipping arpeggios. Has played with mr. BIG and Racer X
Joe Satriani Teacher of Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett and many more. Also a great guitarist, he started the wave of instrumental guitar music, popularized it. (is that even a word?) Would probably be most famous for organizing the G3 tours and his smoking legato technique.
Steve Vai amazing instrumental guitar player. a must see, must listen. Would easily be recognized because he sounds like zappa, just faster and cleaner. Could also be described like talking, his playing sounds like a conversation. Has also played with Frank Zappa.
Frank Zappa - the man, the legend, the myth..
Andy Timmons - Guitarist from Danger Danger and has also persued a solo carreer. Great technique and phrasing, a lot of people consider his tone to be one of the best ever.
Jeff Beck recognized for his "feeling" he has "it". Very high rated guitar player.
Jason Becker - probably the saddest story of all time in the guitar world.. This man had a natural talent to play guitar, he had the musicality and a natural dexterity in his fingers. He also practised an insane amount.. He then got ill and was told he'd only live a couple of years. He does however still live, and he composes music on a laptop. He can't play anymore though, but check out his work with Marty Friedman in Cocophony
Randy Roads - one of the first to bring classical influenses to the rock music. Played with Ozzy in the early days. Died young, unfortunately...
Yngwie Malmsteen The swedish sweeping, neoclassical metal monster.
Mattias IA Eklundh a pretty crazy guy, he is probably most famous for his work with harmonics. Something everyone should check out.
OFC. Kristofer, Muris, Emir, Jose, Ivan, Ian, Marcus, Gabriel, Trond, Davic etc. from our beloved GMC.
I don't have time for more atm. But the list is long.
Brett Garsed-One of the best players out there!Jazz,rock,fusion-he plays out notes that acutaly sound good and has a rock players dynamic touch
Chad Coggin-An american friend of mine who if he wanted to be would be guitarist that ALL pros would look up too and say how the hell does he play that way!does all styles but his rock voice is like George Lynch in his prime with FAR better rock chops, vibrato, harmonics, ect, ect
Don't forget
Kyle Gass (& Jack Black) , Famous for making hard rock/heavy solos on acoustic guitars (and goofy songs)
As well as John Sykes, former guitarist of Whitesnake

Jimi Hendrix isn't on that list, but I suppose he's a bit to obvious. Same goes for John McLaughlin, but he's also pretty obvious I guess.
Good lord
I'll update the list tomorrow when I'm back home.
Siggum: Oh, I'm sorry, I just watched the original list and thought he had added everything mentioned already, my bad
Also:
John Haughm (Agalloch)
and
Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford (Genesis)
Mick Thompson and Jim Root. Amzing guitarists. Also, I don't know if this has been said, Synster Gates and Zacky Vengance. All of them are insane.
AND WHY IS DIMEBAG DARREL NOT ON THE LIST!!!!!!!!!
Michael Lee Firkins \m/
+1 for Michael Lee Firkins and Jim Root. No for Zacky vengeance Synyster gates and dimebag. Dimebag is very well known, and the other two just suck.
I don't really understand why people add their personal favourites, isn't this supposed to be about great guitarists that have done something very innovative or are just outstanding? I mean, come on, John Haughm? He's an amazing songwriter, yes, but he is definetly not a guitarist everyone should know.
Shawn Lane
I'm a little surprised that only one person has suggested Jimmy Page.... one of the greatest ever and certainly a huge influence on many guitarists.
I'd also like to suggest, along with Mr. Page
Tony Iommi
Tom Morello
Mark Tremonti
Brian May
Carlos Santana
Mark Knopfler
Johnny Winter
Nuno Bettencourt
Jerry Cantrell
Billy Gibbons
Bo Diddley
I updated till all posts before my previous post.
And it must indeed like fsgjdv says be guitarists you should know but I dont know that much guitarists so I supose they're famous if you guys tell me they're famous ...
Think that Devin Townsend should be on the list as well.

Tony Macalpine

The category seems a little unclear ... we start with "guitarists you should know", then "famous guitarists", to "great guitarists", then "guitar wonders". Anyway, the guitarists on this list were either famous, added a new style or are guitarists you should know:
Peter Green
T-Bone Walker
Muddy Waters
Glen Buxton (Guitarist with Alice Cooper)
Ry Cooder
Dick Dale
Rory Gallagher
Don Felder (The Eagles)
Steve Cropper
Paul Kossof (Guitarist with Free)
Mickey Baker
Buddy Guy
Mike Bloomfield
Martin Barre (Guitarist with Jethro Tull)
Steve Stevens (Guitarist with Billy Idol)
Mick Box (Uriah Heep)
Billy Gibbons....
Where is Michael Romeo? And Mathew Bellamey (sp?) also Devin Townsend and Emmpu from Nightwish. AAAAAND DIMEBAG!1!1:)
Emmpu Nightwish can be thankfull they have a great key player to do the neoclassical thing when needed!Good band, liked them a lot with their old singer Tarja
Peter Frampton needs to be added big time.
Edit: Just remembered Jake E. Lee, Warren DeMartini, and Nuno Bettencourt need to be added.
Brutal, a double post.
Guys I agree to add only famous guitarists to the list. Please don't add any others.
Maybe someone could say which aren't that famous etc ... (I don't know the half of them xD)
Aight guys, I'll update the list but first I would like to know the names of guitarists who aren't allowed to have a place in the list.
Dude, Blues Saraceno - He's sorta famous. He's an incredible player.... Not many good videos of him, but here's a good example...

And he is defenitly a guitarist you should know
Updated the list and also the introductiontext.
EDIT: changed again
Alex Lifeson from the band Rush and Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins.
hi there...i cant believe no ones mentioned the great Gary Moore!!
2 modern guitarists that are taking the "classic" sound of their genre and doing something new and exciting:
