Emotional Solo In Eb Minor Options

Hiya guys. This is a solo I built recently and it'd be nice to get more feedback!



This solo was born mostly during jamming: I had found some cool licks and this solo is an attempt to put them together (I wrote the backing track in a couple of minutes for this solo). I have been focusing on my vibrato and I hope it shows in my playing. I tried to combine cool vibrato lines and fast runs with some (slightly) bluesy licks I've come up with, hopefully resulting in a kind of "floating" feel in the solo.

I had some issues with timing here, I'm working on it. It's surprisingly difficult to play over a track that doesn't have a strong rhythmic feel.

I know the audio quality isn't that good, partly because the backing track is a Guitar Pro file () but mostly it's because I shot this video with a cheap pocket camera. I'll get a video camera as soon as I get more money! (meaning probably next summer)

I'm working on landing on strong notes, but it's difficult for me.

Great job man I liked it Reminds me of the stuff that Marcus plays especially the tapping lick at 0.22 (sounds really like winding roads solo)

it sounds very good
if you could develope a theme that the listener could get involved with, it will bring them into the music
example-the bend and phrase around 26 seconds try to add this at the end of the solo

Ah man, thanks to everyone for all the awesome feedback!

I've been considering of building a tiny small-time studio in my room, that way I could record stuff and actually affect the audio quality.

This solo doesn't have that much of a theme, except for the basic ideas that it revolves around - but they are more technical than melodic. If I someday create a song out of this, I'll endeavour to give it a more solid approach!

From your REC takes I got the impression that you were a beginner player, just like me, but now I see this You've been doing some REC takes of lessons far under your limit You can shred like hell Very nice alternate picking technique man, I'm jealous! And the backing track contains some very good arpegiated chords (even in GP5 ) as well, nice job dude!

One thing that strucks me, but not necesarily as bad, is your right hand thumb. It's bend backwards! My thumb is bend the otherway around, you might want to see whether that would work better

All in all, really, really great performance man! You've got the cool balance between shred and melody

Kaznie, thank you for putting your time here. Also, I'm overwhelmed by this positive reception my video has gotten here.

About the thumb thing: I tried it out after reading your post concerning it, and it worked! I still haven't completely gotten used to it, but my control's already much better. So a HUGE thank you for helping me fix this thing. Only thing is, now I have to learn to switch between the positions, otherwise my pinch harmonics are dead.

About REC takes... well, yes and no. I have always been more developed in some areas than the others. Some parts of my playing have been underdeveloped, working as a "bottle cap" and stopping me from playing advanced stuff. Now at GMC I've pretty much fixed most of that stuff, allowing me to do some crazy things. I'm still not happy with my speed (since I'm only able to play certain kinds of patterns at high speeds), but at the moment I find it more important to improve my chordal work, phrasing and vibrato than my speed. If my speed's a 7 out of 10, they are somewhere around 3 or 4.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot another big thing: I practice more seriously nowadays, so my development's faster.

Hi Kristian,

This video is great ! I know I'm a bit late to comment on it....

One thing that I'm very pleased to see is that you've got the makings of a really good vibrato.. your fingers are strong and you seem to be in control of the string. The only thing I would maybe suggest is slowing the vibrato down as it's a little too quick and makes it sound shaky. You'll find this easy to do as you already have good, strong finger control.

You have a good point about the backing track... as it's a free sounding track with no drums etc, it can be difficult to establish a theme. If I was playing over this, I'd probably do a lot of lazy sounding, behind the beat bends and legato... very Marty Friedman style. This would give the listener the impression that the player is in control of their abilities and almost holding back the 'special surprises' until they're ready to be played ! I know this is only a fun practice video so we don't need to be too serious here.. but when playing slow melodic pieces like this, try to avoid putting flash licks at the beginning. You can always build up to dramatic playing.. but's it's hard to do it the other way around if you've played all the sexy licks at the beginning of the piece All the licks you did play were great.. it's just the placement of them that I would approach differently in the future.
