First check out Daniels new lesson, "http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metallica-Battery-Rhythm/", and then post a reply to today's topic.

Which band other than Metallica, effectively uses a low, clean, possibly even an acoustic guitar, in the beginning and drives directly into a heavy riff the best? Or starts with the heavy riff and drops into the clean guitar.

Blind Guardian uses this approach sometimes. For example in songs Time What Is Time (great song) and to lesser degree in Quest for Tanelorn, there are more of these. Also Iron Maiden in songs like Fear of the Dark:)

Deep Purple's in "Child in Time" has dramatic changes in dynamics. smile.gif Modern bands that use these changes are SOAD and Arch Enemy.

I remember watching the Dave Navarro instructional instructional video where he states that there should be a "more drastic change" between intro and the song + between other parts as well. Generally I think that approach is really good.
Example is song RHCP - Aeroplane which has soft intro with blasting verse part.
