GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ I'm Too Old To Be A Rock Star

Posted by: purple hayes Jun 15 2010, 05:07 PM

I turned 40 last week. mellow.gif

This Sunday at church, our regular acoustic guitar player (probably in his 50's) was out, so they brought in someone new. New guy was probably in his early 20's.

After church service was over and we went to pick up our guitars, the new young guitar player was immediately surrounded by cute young girls that wanted to talk to him.

That never happens to us older guys. It anything, it's out wives telling us to hurry up and get our gear packed.

Great story mate. Who needs to be a rock star anyway!... Oh well... it's never too late laugh.gif hehe wink.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Jun 15 2010, 05:37 PM

Its never to late. Show em who is the boss next time! smile.gif))

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 15 2010, 05:51 PM

It's the same in my band. All the guys are older than 50 or even 60, and after and during a gig the young girls are just looking at the young rhythm guitar player...luckily that's me ph34r.gif
Seriously, I also think you're never too old to be a rock star...but I think you can't really expect 20 year old girls to admire a 40 year old rock star...except your name is Jon Bon Jovi. Try to impress girls your age or a little younger than you are, it works well for my bandmates.

Funny story but I can see this being true smile.gif Maybe you need to hang more with younger guys ? tongue.gif laugh.gif

we human beings tend to look for good genes,

but we also like wisdom smile.gif

Posted by: Fre Jun 15 2010, 06:40 PM

Great story indeed, but sorry for you.
But there are so many 'old' rock stars, for example Maiden.
They just rock your socks off! I have no doubt you can still be a rock star too!

Wow! How could You guessed that Keil, R U a mind-reader or something??? laugh.gif
In fact I have a story from the last gig we did, a lady at age 65+ attended my former girlfriend and said:
"Who's that little ugly man over there playing ??? " She answered: "-Thats the father of my children!"
The lady then got embaressed and were apologizing to me the rest of the evening. But what really hurted me
was that she seems to be turned on by the bass-player instead. (see photo) I suddenly realized that I'm not able
to get any woman 10 years younger than myself, not even TWENTY years OLDER!!!! So what to do? I dont gonna give this up,
I will be a greater star than Jagger & Richards together, and then I will have girls twice as young as theirs as well as twice as
good-looking !!!!!

EDIT: Uploaded the photo in the right format....

Btw. here is how I looked on stage..... (I didnt know that I look THAT wild, Fred Flinta and I are look-a-likes!!! )

Our bass player sound like Barry White when he talks. I wouldn't stand a chance against him. laugh.gif

This is very true. Often two very different roads lead to each of them. There are many great studio musicians/artists etc out there that are not that famous and yet play/create awesome music.

I don't know how to respond to this without putting my foot in my mouth so I'll just smile smile.gif laugh.gif

But I will say I don't think age matters when it comes to "Rock" As Fre pointed out Maiden is still going strong, Mick and company can still put on a great show even though they are social security age. It's all a state of mind and rock is forever young!!!

I have to slightly disagree somewhat, I am the same age as the replacement guitarist in this story - And I never got any girl because I could play guitar! laugh.gif

I think it depends what you play, learning Dream Theater and Necrophagist riffs got me no women in high school or in the years after for that matter! laugh.gif

Posted by: ruben_mcn Jun 16 2010, 05:06 PM

But if you where playn "More than word"s or "Wild World" .. you would have got all the women in highschool XD

Posted by: Adrian Figallo Jun 16 2010, 05:25 PM

any VH song would do the trick too smile.gif

I hear ya. I frequent another board that is geared for finding band members and quite often the ads go something like this " looking for instrument x player(s) - must be 17 - 22 years old...". unsure.gif

haha. It makes sense tho. Hanging out with people who could be your parents just isn't cool - and being in a band is supposed to be cool laugh.gif

Well, Slash is just a couple of years younger than me, but already got a pacemaker due to his way of living. And I bet I would do a lot better than him with all his girls.... laugh.gif So like I said before, You can never get too old to rock - just behave like You were 19 again on stage. If You got a problem with this, just remember Your first date in the backseat of Your parents car.... biggrin.gif

You're wrong with this one! I really like being in a band with guys who all could be my father, it's all dependent on how cool the people are. Plus I get the attention from the young girls...but I've already said that tongue.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 16 2010, 09:21 PM

Really great thread! Tons of funny stuff. They say your are only as old as you feel, but seeing all the young gals flock to the young player probably made ya feel a bit older. Don't let it get you down, true talent is ageless.

Posted by: Staffy Jun 16 2010, 10:28 PM

I dunno what to do with those young babes anyway - I could probably come up with something fairly easy though.... But in my age, You really want a WOMAN, not a girl, like Ms.Pfeiffer for instance. Anyway, I want to share some metamorphosises with You guy's that I learned when I was in the twenties: (women and russians may be excused)

A woman in her 20'ths is like a Swedish babe - blond, stupid and useless.
A woman in her 30'ths is like an Italian car - fast, expensive and thirsty.
A woman in her 40'ths is like a Mercedes - reliable, comfortable and effective.
A woman above 50 is like Russia - everyone knows where it is, but noone wants to get there......

There are many reasons why people want to become rock stars. Some do it for the money, some for the fame, some for girls, or attention, or just to have people around them. I believe it is better to find out what you really want, and not worry about getting there. If you are good, and act properly with people around you it will happen. If you aren't, well good luck smile.gif

Hah, what a great thread! biggrin.gif

I dont think there is such a thing as being too old to be a rock star. I think it's all about how you present yourself. smile.gif

I think Ivan gave best answer. Someone will be famous someone not, but it's not the goal, it shouldn't be.
We're all lucky having this wonderful hobby called "playing the guitar" smile.gif

Well said. You just can't force anything and being famous doesn't depend on the musician himself rather how his music influences other people. But we should have some ambition and faith in what we do (and general goal to be best at it) or we may not even get the chance at "fame"...
