Hello
I started of playing guitar without much prior reading. Consequently i decided it would be wise to read up on techniques i would be employing. Wikipedia's explaination of alternate picking states that when doing alternate picking it should be a strict up/down pattern Now i been getting to grips with that and advancing quite well etc... One tune that i always wanted to play well was Crossroads by Clapton, i practice this song using a tab and alternate picking... I came across this youtube link where the guy (later part of vid) goes through the picking hand to show his strum patterns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp0Jkf-7Iwc Why is it that this tune is done mostyl with downstrokes? Is there a particular time to use alternate picking? Whats the deal, can anybody enlighten me please F |

Down picking, alternate picking and economy picking all sounds slightly different, so should be used to achieve the sound You want in certain situation.

The economy picking (i just googled it) combined with alternate picking should make things easier Sometimes is easier to economy pick things but I think you should learn both. There are situations where you're going to need strict AP especially for faster stuff and shredding. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

As Emir said, both techniques are important. Having a good picking technique, and flow when changing strings in various situations is essential for becoming a good player, so I advise that you work on both of them. AP is more straighforward, but both can be very complex, because there are so many combinations when changing strings and direction of the pick.
