Presents.

Yes my friends, Christmas time is nearing us again. I loathe to even speak of christmas before thanksgiving, considering I hate the fact that as soon as the pumpkin patches for halloween are gone, tree lots spring up and all the department stores decorate with lights and trees and I suppose I'm just a grinch until after thanksgiving has passed. But in this case, I've realized how much stuff I want this year. And how greedy I am this year, compared to the last few years where I hardly wanted anything. So lets see what GMC wants for Christmas slash whatever holiday you do or do not celebrate this winter (I don't see why, even if you don't celebrate anything, you should not want things anyway )! A few things on my list:

SOME kind of SLR camera, I've been meaning to get a new one ever since my regular digital's screen busted a few months ago, so I haven't been taking pictures since, which sucks.

I need a good microphone for mic'ing my amp.

I also need some good software for making my own backing tracks. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I wish I got everything I asked for, except for the fact that my grandmother spent $10,000 dollars on me last year but that was also because I had to have 3 surgerys around that time too. It was actually over the period of 2 months.

My wife and I now a days give each other a token present and instead concentrate attention on our little one.

She would like and in no particular order:

A puppy (Agreed but not found the right one yet);
A kitten (one of her cats is pregnant and she wants to keep one of the kittens);
A Polly Pocket Treehouse Hotel;
A Rumble in the Jungle board game;
A Nintendo DS;
An Ipod shuffle.

She's still adding to the list though but she accepts with good grace that she might not get all that she wants.
She's also donated a lot of her old toys to Santa to redistribute to other children .

ps my wife's idea of a token present this year is an IPod with docking bay and external speakers . Guess mine will still be a book .

I hope I will get that hanger my eldest (7 yrs) has been working on in the woodwork lesson like forever...

...and I hope I'll get to see the terror in the kids eyes one more year when I step in dressed as santa. That will be gift enough for me.

That's worth thinking about too, not nice to be caught with dubious pictures at home or at work etc.

May I recommend, a chocolate lab. The one I have is so amazing, I love him so much! Playful, gentle, guardian. It really has all the qualities you could want in a pet. He's dumb as a brick, but my other dog makes up for that!

Totally agree Animosity - sadly only ones that came up recently were gone long before we got there, despite costing 500Euros each! My wife has had Labs (usually black) since she was little.

Keep being offered Rottweiler, Pit Bulls and German Sheppard puppies . Definite 'no' to those.

Aye, they can grow up to be vicious dogs. I'm not saying they are bad dogs, they are more bought for protection, not necessarily one you want your little girl around though. Maybe when she gets older.

Pit Bulls, I don't trust them. I once stayed at a friends home whom had a friend who had a pit bull. I was scared of the dog and it was scared of me for some reason that probably only the dog knew. I never was afraid of a dog before but this one was, not threatening really but... it didn't respond well.. don't know how to describe it. My ex gf had a dog that was a cross breed who was kind of the same when she got cancer (the dog that is), that came to a point when the dog acted irrational and was unpredictible.

...short story - I, me and my ex gf actually, was "dog-sitting" for 4-5 weeks once, a german shepard who was a nervous wreck. (most of the time locked up alone in an apartment and for the rest of the time yelled at).
We took it out for long walks, tried to unleach it but it ran away and was gone for hours and hours. It really needed a lot of work (and love) this one, pissed himself all the time and lied on the floor trembling for the upcoming punishment (which was not for me but I guess the owners had some method). Other times just being nervours, running around in the apartment withput a plan.

All we could do was sit and wait for it to get hungry and return home. And a day later it managed to slip out the door when we got a visitor who opened and stepped inside so the same story repeated itself.
Next time I took it out to the woods. Released the dog and let him run for a while. Then I called it back. Just started at me. Called again, got nothing.
I'm no dog-knower at all, never read a book or anything and wasn't even interested in owning a dog though my ex had one at her parents. Thought to myself, what would be the wort thing that could happen to this dog right here right now. To be driven from the pack, where I was supposed to be the alfa male... which I assumably wasn't since my pack (the dog) didn't listen to me. And be aware this was after some time of problems with wet floors, runaways and more and more and more. I picked up a hand full of pines, called for the dog to come, got nothing, started to yell at the dog to go away and threw a pine at him. Now at least I got it's attention. Startled at first, more pines flying and the dog started to approach me. I held out the leach, got nothing. Threw more pines, he was trying to approach but I threw more. Had to show who was boss and that he wasn't welcome. I think we got to a point where I became leader and I noticed he was not going to attempt to approach anymore, of fear of the pines flying and not feeling welcome.
Fine, now I was in charge, my flock had distanced itself from me and was for the moment feeling he had no belonging.
I held out the leech and viola... he came, sticked his head into it and followed me to the car without stretching and fighting the leech one bit. And I tell you, from that moment I could take the leech of at anytime, he would never run off. And if he ever went to far, he'd come when I called. And I was happy to see this dogs life changed from being a wreck into a strong stand up dog. The following weeks until the real owners returned we had a great time with lots of play, cuddle, exercise and practice.
The day they came to pick their dog up I felt very sad and it stung a bit to see him greet them so happily - I thought to myself what the heck does he do that for, they will only ruin you again.

Two weeks later me and the ex went to their home and I was greeted by the dog, then he pissed the floor and went hiding beding the fridge. A week later they asked us if we wanted him. We thought about it but we said no. Living in an apartment and her dog was at her parents house because we didn't have time to come home once or twice a day to walk it and serve lunch so we knew it would be fair to the animal. Better maybe but not good enough, so relatively speaking it would have been better but not up to the standards we'd like. We had manage dog-sitting during the summer when we were free, but with work to go to, no.
Shortly after I heard they put the dog away. Nothing wrong with it really, just badly treated (not enough love and care, too little exercise, yelled at a lot by tired owndes) so it didn't feel fair.

A bunch of BS to most of you maybe, I just wanted to share an episode where I feel I failed. Not that I never fail but this caused another life to end so this still nibbles my mind though it's been 15 years or so

Great story MickeM,
my wife uses the 'dog whispering' method of training and much of what you did is the same. Sort of about seeing the dog as part of a wolf pack and you as the alpha like you said and then getting and keeping control/dominance.

Bit like your story - we've been offered a Dalmation that behaves like the German Shepard in your's. We've said no as we don't think our other animals (cats and rabbits) would cope well with a nervous dog. So we're still looking...

I used to watch his show (before I killed my TV). Now my dog is considered by all to be an exceptional dog, very well trained, but still very social, loves everybody, lots of personality. But if he is 100 yards away and chasing a rabbbit and I say "sit", he plops down, I trained him.

I don't see eye to eye totally with the dog whisperer. And as I said, have had great success. I agree with a lot of it. But where I differ, is that I feel the dog does not always haven to submit to you. There are times when I require obedience, no arguing. But at other times I won't, he gets his way, or at least he is allowed to try and negotiate with me to get his way. But then after awhile I might say "that's it BoBo, you listen now, no more arguing!" And he will do what I say then.

This is how I differ from the dog Whisperer. I established that I am the boss. But I won't all the time act bossy. The dog whisperer is bossy all the time, always maintains the relationship. Now what I have done takes a lot more time, and effort. I will admit that. So maybe his method is better for most people. I don't have kids or anything, so I could put that effort into my dog.


edit: I will give an example. When BoBo wants treats, he has some pretty entertaining ways of trying to get them. He will bark at me. Or get a squeaky toy and squeak it at me, or shake a stuffed animal at me, or grab my pillow. He makes me laugh, and he knows when I laugh, he has got me. Ok, this can go on a bit. But then it reaches the point where I am not giving him any more treats, and I will say "NO MORE, or you sit on the step". Or "one more, but if you bother me again you sit on the step". And then he probably will push his luck, and I make him sit on the step for a few seconds, and say "ok, you can get off, but if you dare ask again, you are going to be on that step!". And then he leaves me alone.

The dog whisper would never do that. But as you see, it requires effort. But dogs always want more, so you have to have a way of getting them to accept that they don't get anymore. The dog whisperer is right about most everything, he understands dogs of course. They always want more. They have to know who is in charge. And maybe with a different breed, I might have to do things his way. But I would never get a dog like that, I picked BoBo very carefully, tested him and his litter mates, pick him because he tested well, I knew what I was getting.

Well, in the past 4-5 months, i bought a new amp, an XBOX 360, New ATI Graphics Card, crap load of CD's and DVD's, so i dont know what to ask for.

I think im going to ask for a Trace-Light table, which are those tables to you see with a lamp underneath them that projects light through a table for you to draw on, i really need one, get shadows out of my way, and a better lighting system for models and mannequins.

I probably just get money, then go buy more CD's, and then more CD's, and you know what?

Well, although I have tried modeling gizmo`s before and didnt really get on with them I decided that I wanted to give it another go, so my wife has bought me a POD XT Live for crimboid, alas it is sitting in our cupboard and I`m not allowed to give it a try till Christmas

Apart from that I havnt got any other huge wants for christmas, apart from the winning lottery numbers for a triple rollover week pls, that`d be nice

Take her out clubbing until late Smells. When you get back home send her off to bed and whilst she's asleep put up the Xmas decorations, spray some fake snow about and change the calenders to 25th December. In the morning when she wakes just tell her that she over slept and missed out on a few weeks. She won't realise until after lunch and by that time you'll have got it unpackaged and plugged in .
