Definetly a good way of getting good sounds, but the main proble with this is that the majority of the tones you can copy with this method had already been mixed and mastered, so they propably won't fit really well into another track. The other problem is that you don't get the same dynamics (or any dynamics at all).

I'm going to grab some demo mp3's of philx and pete thorn etc so it's pretty much guitar into amp into cab into interface (and then ruined with youtube compressions laugh.gif )

That's correct and many Young guitar players forget about what they are really listening to. Guitars in mastered recordings are "pomped" with some multiband compressors and even full recordings have some extreme mid-range cut off. Even if You make Your tone similar to Your idol recording You might be dissapointed after You'll be done with whole song mastering (to much cut off in guitars while whole mix need it)

I'm also a young guitar player, and I'm an avid beliver of tube amps and microphones biggrin.gif
Btw, the dynamics are also very important when recording. Without proper dynamics, the tone comes from the amp(simulation) and the effects,
while tube amps capture every nuance of your playing, thus bringing out the tone from your fingers.
