I posted this one before but am posting it again for those who missed it.
Most of the covers of Louie Louie have missed the mark in my opinion because no one seems to know the lyrics. Being the age that I am, I remember the original recording by Richard Berry & the Pharaohs from 1958. This was a West Coast regional hit when I was in my sophomore year in high school in Los Angeles, California. The original song is about the days of sailing ships and of a homesick young Jamaican sailor in a far distant port. He tells Louis the bartender about his girl back home and how his ship will sail with the tide to return to Jamaica. A sweet romantic tale, "Louie, Louie, me got to go." The original Louie Louie beat is a Cha Cha Cha beat played backwards. This vid was shot September 17, 2012 at the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake, California. I've wanted to do this Caribbean style arrangement for some years but never had the people who could play it until recently. This crew understood completely what I wanted to do and ran with it. Love the groove and orchestrations! There was this post running in the practice room in which African styles were debated - would this fit the bill as inspiration maybe?

There is a definite African influence in Caribbean music, it crosses into Jamaican, Bahamian, Cuban, Puerto Rican. We tried for that flavor. It sure gets people on the dance floor! Here's an earlier sound recording version done in 2010 with different musicians...I play all the guitar parts. You can hear how the live version evolved from this. Here's the original 1957 recording by Richard Berry & the Pharaohs. This was the version that I heard as a high school kid. You can hear the Cha Cha beat in reverse in the bass vocal.

Well Cosmin...the original was done back in the Doo Wop '50s, I posted it for reference...it did inspire me...and...my philosophy on doing cover versions is: If you can't bring something new to a song, then don't bother covering it.
