you can get a free Trial version. Just click on any "Guitar Pro Tab" link on any lesson and it displays a link were to download GP trial version for free.

I use a program called Tux Guitar, it reads guitar pro tabs but its completley free! its just kinda hard to find a good spot to download

Nice pointer to that program! Here's a link for those interested ( according to the site it can import and export Guitar Pro 3, 4, and 5 file format ) :

i kno, i love it when my guitar pro expired i had to get somethin to play the tabs i wrote and wanted to hear, its a nice little program that works just as well if not better

This is great! Thanks for the tip Sergeant_Ant & exorcyze.
I know a lot of students who can not afford to to buy Guitar Pro, and this seems to be a good alternative (atleast to read GP files). And I see it's avalible for both Windows, Linux and Mac.

You can check out the free trial or buy for $59USD. I purchased and also purchased a copy of the CD for another $7 that way I can install on any computer I want. Here is the link.
