Just saw this; http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/genera...sed_record.html
It was very popular when I was a kid, more expensive than cassette but better sounding. Sometime around 2000's I think it made a comeback which didn't last very long. It's still available though and buying used sound systems, albums make it very affordable. I have a cousin (his band is very famous here) who enjoys also a student older than me who has 3 systems (work, home and summer house). I don't have a sound system at home but enjoy listening when I visit them. Its sound more pleasing to me than CD I bet there are many people who hasn't listened vinyl recently This post has been edited by Mertay: Apr 21 2014, 07:12 PM |

I have no opinion on what's a better medium to listen to. I just have it. I also have cassettes, CDs, mp3s and almost every listening medium there is. I collect music. I listen to music. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

That is a small sample of the vinyl I have.
If I ever decided to sell my vinyl and CDs it would be like walking into a small record store. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

I still have about 2000 lps on vinyl and around the same number of singles/eps. I sold and gave away most of my record collection though when we moved to Spain. I've given some of the rare stuff to my daughter as presents over the years - so she has things like a signed copy of the 10'' Mudhoney/Sonic Youth 'Touch me I'm sick', Nirvana's 'Bleach' signed original on Subpop, a signed Joy Division's first album in the embossed sleeve (she's in to New Wave/Punk and grunge so that's what I give her)...
I prefer vinyl to CDs particularly when the hifi is up to snuff - our turntable is a Michell Engineering Orbe here so is pretty good. I still use the Cocteau Twin's 'Victorialand' album to show how good vinyl can sound. When I first started mastering soem of my first lessons were how to master and use a lathe for vinyl. A bit like Ken though I also have other media; lots of cassette tapes, 1000s of CDs, some dats and some r2r. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. My dad had a lot of vinyls when I was a kid, but essentially I grew up with CDs, but I do like the sound of vinyl more I think, but I can't quite say why.

Just a small part of my 'Music' collection. Like Ken said, I'm a fan of listening to music and have a large collection in many different formats! A thing 'o beauty there Jonesy! ... Do you guys (Sensible, Tony) just sit in front of your stereo staring at the speakers and reading liner notes? Same as Neil - I read them on a first listen but then rarely look at them again unless it's the notes or libretto for a classical piece or opera and then I may read it more often and in the case of a libretto sometimes use it to follow the piece. Also, artwork from Warp, 4 AD and the like I pay more abiding attention to than the run of the mill stuff. Neil's lp shelving is great - storage is always a big problem with vinyl... -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. okay... so I just went and bought a new turntable and the 1976 uk pressing of 2112 by Rush, Ive always thought that would be an album worth listening to on vinyl, also the pic of them on the back cover is kinda 'groovy' !
Im curious, the folks here that buy vinyl, what are your preferred sources, amazon, ebay? here in the UK we have 'record fairs' every so often where there are a lot of second hand albums for sale. I havent been to one since I was a teenager and I would buy bootleg cassettes of gigs I dunno if these fairs are any good these days but there is one near me next month so Im gonna go along and maybe grab some cool albums.... or get ripped off cause Im a bit of a noob! -------------------- You say 'minor pentatonic ' like it's a bad thing |

No 'preferred' sources but we're lucky here. There's still record stores. The best is Amoeba Records in Hollywood. The pics don't show much vinyl but they have a ton of it + DVDs, CDs, 45's, video cassettes, cassette tapes, laser discs - you name it. And the shop is packed 7 days a week all friggin day ... https://www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en&pb...ed=0CIYBEKIqMBA
There are two small shops I go to walking distance from my place that sell vinyl and we also have 'record fairs'. I don't buy much vinyl at all anymore. A handful a year and usually only things that are super rare/odd and can't be found (reasonably priced) in any other medium, if at all. I doubt you'll get ripped off. Check for scratches and warping and realistically don't pay too much more for __________ vinyl album than you would for a new CD or complete download via itunes. Unless it's a first or 2nd pressing from the year of release it shouldn't be 'expensive' (rare and collectible items not withstanding). Ive not seen anything close to that over here! even pre-internet days I would need to travel through to Edinburgh to find a store that was in the ballpark of that place I was digging through my old vinyl collection last night, I seem to have a few rarities in there, nothing crazy expensive but a few picture discs and banned / limited covers, stuff like that. kinda cool Im looking forward to the record fair next month, hopefully the prices are a bit bit better than on Amazon just now. The new Mastodon album from Amazon on CD is £7.95..... on vinyl it's £23.33! -------------------- You say 'minor pentatonic ' like it's a bad thing |

As Todd mentioned, vinyl is having a mini boom right now. When a current or new band presses vinyl it does so because vinyl is the new 'merch'. They know they can get people to pay for it. We'll see how long that lasts - ? -------------------- - Ken Lasaine
