Hey, looking forward to it. My goals are to learn to compose and record and really just want to get better at everything. I think my weaknesses are my timing and technique as well as being able to play what I hear. For strengths I think I have good finger speed a good base in theory (self taught so I could be wrong biggrin.gif ) and I'm persistant I'll keep at it till I get it right. I don't know if I really have any favorite guitar players I get inspired by so many different people and bands. Dimebag Darrell was a big influence but I like so many different kinds of music that its hard to pinpoint anybody specific other than anybody who can play a good groove, or something technical.
Thanks

That sounds great!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif Ok so I think I got it.

A, E, Bm, E, A ,E ,Bm, E, A, E, A, Dm, A, E, A, Dm, A.
Key: A major

I chose A major because it began on A and ended on A and because of the F#, G#, and C#, but I'm not sure how the Dm fits in but A major seemed the most fitting to me?????

Thanks,
Chris

You are correct it is A major and D minor is a part of it if we are using D melodic minor V will be A triad or A7 chord! You almost got it right try to listen carefully and I am sure you will get it! 99% there! smile.gif

I don't follow. I thought I knew how to harmonize a scale but I guess I don't know what you mean by this, and is a dom7 chord made up of 1,3,5,b7. So A7 would be A,C#,E,G? Most of the theory I know is stuff I tried to learn myself from reading articles and stuff so I may get a little lost here and there, it makes sense to me hopefully it was right biggrin.gif

And is this it did I have it mixed up?

A,E,Dm,E
A,E,Dm,E
A,Bm,A,Dm
A,Bm,A,Dm
A

Check it out!
The chord progression is:
A - C#mi - Bmi - E
A - Bmi - C#mi - Dmi
That's all it was! smile.gif The only difference was Dmi which came from D melodic minor
If we would harmonize the scale we will get:
Dmi/maj7 - Emi7 - Fmaj7#5 - G7 - A7 - B#mi7b5 - C#mi7b5

Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

Ok, so the Dm was just "borrowed" and has no effect on the overall key? But is still related through the A7 in D harmonic minor. How do you know when a chord is just borrowed from another scale or key, instead of causing it to modulate, or have a more direct effect on what key the piece is in? And since I bombed on this test, what's next. I look forward to the next challenge!

Hey, I was also working on your "In the style of Keith Richards" collab and came up with this. Is this ok? I have a few more days to work on something else. I wanted to get your opinion before I put it in the collab thread. I love playing bluesy stuff and I just finished my first collab with Gabe and now I'm hooked and I didn't want miss this one.

Thanks

Well in order to understand the keys you need to understand how to harmonize the scale and learn circle of fifth would you like me to explain you how it works?
Dmi is related to A7 if we are thinking of it as D melodic or harmonic minor!

So let me show you a harmonization first!
Here is how you can harmonize major scale!
Maj7 - Mi7 - Mi7 - Maj7 - 7 - Mi7 - Half diminished (mi7b5)

Using this method I would like you to harmonize two scales:
G major and A major
Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

Well you are almost correct but you forgot sharps and flats
Are you familiar with the circle of fifth?

Crap....I'm not sure what I was thinking. I don't have all the keys memorized but I do know those two.

Gmaj7, Amin7, Bmin7, Cmaj7, D7, Emin7, F#m7b5
Amaj7, Bmin7, C#min7, Dmaj7, E7, F#min7, G#m7b5

I know a little of the circle of fifths. I'm not sure I could draw it 100%, but it tells the key signatures and how many sharps and flats for each key by starting at C and moving clockwise in fifths, adding one sharp as it goes. Counter clockwise it goes in fourths adding one flat as it goes, but I can't remember the pattern of which sharp and flat it adds. And also shows the relative minor for a major key?

I'm sorry man, I promise it's not from lack of effort. I spent quite a bit of time isolating each chord on a loop, looking for the bass note. I come up with something different everytime it seems like. For the bass notes is this close I am unsure about a couple but felt good about some? A,D,E,D,A,D,C?,D,A,D,F?,D,C? Thanks.

I went through and still don't seem to be able to pick out just the bass note but I put together all the notes that I could find in each chord to try to figure out the chord, and bass note. Soooooooo, I'm gonna guess the bass notes are the same and just repeat 2 and a half more times. But since I was picking out everything I'm gonna take a guess at the whole thing.
Dm7, Gmaj7, Cmaj7, Bm7
Dm, G, C, Bm
Dm7, Gmaj7, Cmaj7, Bm7
Dm, G
The 7th chords didn't seem to fit the 2nd and fourth time, but I'm having trouble trusting my ears at this point smile.gif

I found this in the rec room and have since spent the past few day reading and catching up on all the technology that I have apparently been missing. I'm not very good with computers really and it took me 3 days to figure out to turn the monitor on button on in reaper biggrin.gif then I had to figure out noisegates, and vst's, Impulse responses, the order of things, impulse loaders, panning different cabinets. Holly cow when I started, you just needed an amp. I'm on overload now, with all the free software out there, it's like walking into a music store and they tell you you can have whatever you want.......almost....I can't wait to do some more collabs now and get some tips on mixing and tone. You must think I have been living under a rock. tongue.gif So any way this progression was especially fun and in reaper it was easier for me to mix and isolate.......Hopefully I got this one right.

It is awesome that you are learning how to use the software!!! It will definitely help you to become a better player if you record yourself! smile.gif It might hard at first but as soon as you will get it everything will be very easy!!!!

Hey alex, here is my guess of the day tongue.gif Are the bass notes D, F, G, C, D, F, G, C? Is there a common mistake that you can notice that I am making, I wish I could figure out how I'm going wrong. Hey, it's almost like chord progression hangman tongue.gif Are the bass notes??????????? D, A#, G, F??????? Do you have any idea what I could be doing wrong? Is there a way to figure out why I can't pic out the right notes or is it just a matter of practice? When I am trying to figure them out I isolate a section on a loop and try to play a not with it that fits, then a chord. Should I try to listen then shut the music of and try to find it on the guitar? How do you do it?

Hey, it's almost like chord progression hangman tongue.gif Are the bass notes??????????? D, A#, G, F??????? Do you have any idea what I could be doing wrong? Is there a way to figure out why I can't pic out the right notes or is it just a matter of practice? When I am trying to figure them out I isolate a section on a loop and try to play a not with it that fits, then a chord. Should I try to listen then shut the music of and try to find it on the guitar? How do you do it?

What we can do if you can make a short video of you transcribing? or you can just explain it step by step in the thread by writing! This way I will get an exact idea on how to help you!
I know you have a good ear and it shouldn't be a hard fix!

I kow you have a good ear and it shouldn't be a hard fix!

I took this as quite a compliment coming from you. I have so much respect for all of the instructors that I really appreciate things like this. Also before I get into my rant about why I hate my computer and couldn't post a video today I want to say that I watched some of your videos and "All about the rain" is an amazing song. Can't tell you how much I like that song and the video story concept going from that to "trouble maker" and "search", also great songs.
Anyway. I have been having an issue with my webcam conflicting with reaper because it has a microphone in it and my settings, but I had it working finally today......UNTIL.......I sat down to record myself transcribing something. I am gonna keep working on it, but hopefully a description will be ok for now. I start by loading the progression into reaper and looping one chord or section at a time, and then try to find what I think might be the root note. When I think I have it I try a major and minor chords to see if they fit. If they sound ok I hit individual notes of the chord to make sure all the notes of the chord I'm working with sound ok. If all else fails I try to look for individual notes one at a time and write them down, and see what chord they make. Then I move on to the next section or chord. When I've gone through the whole thing I go back and try to play it. Oh and usually I add in some cursing and swearing randomly here and there just for effect biggrin.gif
Thanks

Thank you very much! I am honored and very happy that you like my music! smile.gif
It sounds to me that you are doing everything right! Video will help more though, but we have something to work with
I would like you to get the roots first of each chord!
When you feel that you got it try to play it and see if it sounds like the track!
Let's try to do first 3 chords for now!
It seems to me that you have the same issue as me when I started transcribing I know what you are going through and also know how to fix it! smile.gif
So let's do first 3 chords roots only!

If I change my settings I can get my webcam and reaper to play nice, but I end up with noticable latency. If I record a video with a little bit of timing issue will you still be able to see what you need better?
Did you write all the parts for your album or do you have a band that you play with?

Latency if totally fine! I will be able to understand what's going on! smile.gif
I hired some guys to play on the record but different musicians for each track!
How does transcribing coming along? Do you have any questions?

I really thought I kept hearing an A# in that second chord. And this time I was gonna guess D,F,G. BUUUUUUUT, I was just thinking about it and consulted the circle of fifths looking for the key with A# because that would also have F#, G#, and D#. that just doesn't fit because I was also hearing a D and an F. And then It hit me Bb rolleyes.gif . Soooo are the first three root notes D, Bb, G????? Next time I will record myself.

You are almost got it! The first 3 notes are D - G - C Let's figure out the chords now!
Try to find the correct chords

All that sounded good! I thought I was onto something. I tried to record video today, but ran into the issue of while I have the track looping over one section my audio records in over and over in a loop as well. I'm begining to think that actually playing the guitar is the easiest part of this. laugh.gif Are the chords....Dm7, Gm7, and Csus2? I rememer the first chord being Dm7, the second chord I was hearing the notes G,F,Bb,D, which would be gm7? And the third chord I was hearing C, G, and D which would be Csus2? Also this is what I have been working on for the collab I was wondering if I could get your opinion so far. It still needs a little work. Thanks.

The first chord is correct the rest is wrong
Let me ask you a few more questions:
-What are you using to tune your guitar?
-Are you playing along with the track?
-Is you guitar plugged in when you are doing it?
We will try a different approach! I will post a new chord progression for you tomorrow and will explain what we will be doing! smile.gif
I think I have a perfect solution that will help you with transcriptions in no time!

Great job on collab! I love your solo! Very very nice!
Would you mind posting it to the collab thread so it will be more organized?

I really happy you like my take on the collab. Your comments mean alot!! smile.gif I will post it over there as soon as I finish tweaking it I've got a few more days to make it as perfect as I can wink.gif
I tune my guitar with this

It's fairly old I guess, maybe it needs a new battery. I also have a nice tuner app on my mp3 player, but I haven't used it as much because I didn't know how accurate an app might be. Maybe I'll put a new battery in my korg tuner and compare the two? I play along with the track but I loop sections and work on one chord at a time. I plug my guitar in directly to my computer and play through my DAW (which is reaper). I haven't had as much time each day as I would like to work on this, I think this is something that I should be doing everyday. I will get on top of it and get back to more regular practice. I am taking this very seriously! I've put off learning this for too long. I have no doubt you'll figure out how to help me smile.gif

I think this will work just fine! smile.gif You have a nice tuner try changing a battery it might do something! I am not really sure to be honest!
Here is a new progression to transcribe! It has only 4 chords
This should be much easier I think the reason you had some trouble with the last one is because of picking so we will start adding it slowly!
 Chords.mp3 ( 467.67K ) : 129

I would like you to start with a bass first! smile.gif

This one did feel much easier. I almost thought I knew what chord to try with much less searching. But I also thought I had the other ones wink.gif Are the bass notes C, G, A, E? I played along with this for a while because I really liked the progression so it will be really bad if I got it wrong smile.gif

I think picking was messing everything up!

Welcome to Recording mentoring
I have a few questions before we will start:

- What recording software do you use? (if any)
- What type of DAW do you have? (if any)
- What are your favorite styles?
- What would you like to learn?* (Record your own music, make backing tracks, record guitar, mix, master, arrange?)
* We will cover all topics but I would like to see what your priorities are!

Thanks!!!!!!! I am so excited that I got this one!!!!!!! biggrin.gif Maybe I was looping too large of a section and that's why the picking was throwing me off. As we move forward should I concentrate on just the first sound and try to remember it and not play over a loop?
As for the recording I am recording into reaper, I am using a bunch of different amp simulators and effects that I have downloaded. I am still sorting through them all to see which ones I like and what does what. My favorite styles of music is probably rock and metal, but I really like a lilttle bit of everything. Recording my own stuff will probably be on the stoner rock/sludge metal side of things. I think what I would really like to learn is how to record a song. I have had lots of ideas I have just never been able to put them all together to make a song, a backing track, or anything more than a riff.
Thanks smile.gif

I do. I have a program called hammerhead. It helped me discover my hidden talent for creating fantastic techno dance beats rolleyes.gif I'm not so good with creating regular drum beats with it yet smile.gif Here is a screen shot of that if you are not familiar. It was a free program I found.

I also have a program called mulab which came with a tone of cool soft synths and a bunch of nice sounding drum kits. And I have a midi keyboard to play them and record them with. I can get it to sound a bit more rock/human this way tongue.gif Here is a screen shot of that.

Also, I try to look at everything I do here like online classes like GMC university smile.gif and I am willing to work on as much "homework" as you are willing to give me, so what ever you ask me to do with the recording/transcribing/improve I'll do!!!!!!! A little at a time all at once, I'm ready!

Ok cool! So let's start creating! smile.gif
The way we will be doing it:
I would like to start with a drums! Nothing to complicated no crazy beats or anything like that start with a straight beat!
can you make a drum track like that? For drum I am using EZ drummer it is a very good program it runs on VST and AU google it and let me know what do you think! smile.gif
Here is a kinda drum chart of what I would like you to do
Kick - Snare - Kick - Kick - Snare you can have a high hat going in any way you would like (8th or 16th notes)
Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything!

Perfect! I am glad you got EZ drummer it is a very useful software and you can do so much with it!
Composition is very fun! smile.gif
Each song has a structure that you need to decide on before you will do anything
Here is abbreviation that is used for it to make it easier to understand
Verse = A
Chorus = B
Bridge = C
Solo = Solo and a part you would like it to be played over
for example if you would like to have a solo over the verse do that - Solo A
I would like you to create a structure also let's figure out verse chord progression!

You did an amazing job on transcribing!! Congrats! You are getting better at it already!!! Keep it up!
I will be giving you new things to transcribe once a week and you will be an amazing transcriber in no time! wink.gif

Yes very fun. All of this has been fun! How about a structure like A,B,Solo C,A,B,SOLO C,B? And what about a chord progression, something sad sounding like Am, Dm, Am, Em? Or maybe an Asus2 in there somewhere? When I did my drum track I put kick and snare on the same track, and the hi hat on a seperate track. Should the kick and snare be on seperate tracks also for mixing later? Thanks!!!

I like the chord progression but would suggest to stay with a more common structure
A - B - A - B - C - Solo - B?
We will get to the chords after the drum track is created! For now let's concentrate on drums:)
On EZ Drummer you have already prepared drum tracks that you can just drop on the track
Here is a step by step on how you can do that! smile.gif
1) Open Ez drummer and select drum kit you would like to use

2) Click Open grooves - choose the style - choose the meter - chose the type

3)Drag your loop to the track

4) After that you have the first section done now you can copy and paste it so you will have beat for the full lenght of your track

Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything! smile.gif

WOW! That is easier. The hardest part is deciding what to use!! smile.gif That structure is good. I had a feeling you might want me to stick with something more common. smile.gif What do you think of this drum track. I wasn't sure how long to make it for now, but it is 12 measures and the pattern is 4 measures copied once with a 4 measure fill.

I guess I was confused, I thought we were just doing the verse, then I read back. I would actually like to use different parts throughout. I will figure out some different parts and get them up! smile.gif

Sounds great! I am looking forward to hear what you will come up with! smile.gif

Hey man, what do you think of this one? It is at 70 bpm 9 measures for each verse 9 measures for each chorus and 6 for the bridge/solo.
And arranged in the A,B,A,B,BRIDGE/SOLO,B arrangement we decided on. smile.gif

Very interesting beat! I like it a lot! So let's figure out the chord progression!
Start with the verse and chorus!

Ok, hope I did this right and did not get ahead of myself. This is what I came up with. smile.gif Although the verse I'm playing octaves with an open E string and I'm not really sure how to name them, But they go G,F#,A,B. Chorus is A5,G5,F#5, Am, Em, Am, Dm, Am, Em. And the bridge is blank (I know I got that part right tongue.gif ). Thanks. Looking forward to your comments. smile.gif

Man that sounds cool! I like it a lot! I would suggest to make stops more noticeable so there is no extra sounds! Do that and we will move to the next part! smile.gif Great job!

Thank you, I'm really glad you like it. biggrin.gif I tightened it up a little and fixed the stops. I also tuned my guitar, you would think that I would remember to do that by now. rolleyes.gif I think there are still a couple small things that could be better, but how perfect should each part be at this point? I hear so much more when I don't have distortion and reverb to hide behind. smile.gif

It sounded very good! I think it's time to add some bass! Do you have a software to program it or own a bass guitar?

Unfortunetly I do not have a bass guitar YET!. But I do have some synths to program it, I don't really like them as much as a real bass. Hopefully they will do for now. I will see if I can find some I like the sound of better by the time you reply. smile.gif It's amazing how quickly a track goes from a drum beat to starting to sound like something, just by adding 1 guitar track, at least to me.

I wrote all this yesterday and while I was looking at soundfonts for my sampler today I discovered that the low E on a 4 string bass is E1, I was thinking it was lower than that for some reason. I have one of my guitars tuned in fifths and goes down to F1. Will that work filling in the bass, or should I try the synths or soundfonts?

You can use synths as a bass it will work just fine! smile.gif There are some very realistic sounding synths! Try it out first and if it doesn't work I will explain how you can try using guitar as a bass it is not gonna sound as good as the real one or a synth but you can get pretty close!

The bass was a lot tougher than I thought. I had a hard time coming up with something that I thought was interesting but still simple enough for the tune. I experimented with different synths and even some orchestra type things, but settled on some soundfonts loaded into my sampler run through amplitube. What do you think?

It sounds very good I like the part maybe you can EQ and compress it a little more
Try to raise the bass and mid frequencies a little bit and you will hear the difference!

How does this one sound? I swapped the compressor in the amplitube patch for a reaper compressor and eq.

You did great the only mistake is that chords are 7th not minors! So I think you are ready to rock this progression!
I would like you to use this positions of E minor pentatonic

And record a little solo over the progression!
The chords are:
E7 - A7 - E7 - B7

I'm not sure it's very good but I don't think if I played around too much more it would be improvised either.

You did a really good job! I think you can start using different octaves now and try to develop your solo! The best trick is to play a phrase and than reply in a higher register! Try it out! Let me know if it makes sense smile.gif If you would like I can explain octave term and how to use it in more details!

Hey Alex, how is everything? I have been working at this, but it is tough. I don't think I have ever tried to play the same thing at different ocatves in the same position. Usually I move somewhere to keep the pattern the same. I have to really stop and think about what I am doing. I have almost got something, but it is far from improvised biggrin.gif.
I got a bass question for you too. If I have an arrangement with downtuned guitars, are there any tricks for adding bass without the guitar and bass competing. And also are there any beginner theory to adding a bass track. Like should the bass just use certain chord tones in rhythm with the kick, or something like that? Thanks.

It is totally fine! It takes time to get it right! smile.gif But you are on the right track! I would love to hear what you came up with!
Usually the bass is playing root notes of the chords you can choose the groove that will go smoothly with the drums!
I will ask Bogdan about it cause knows more about bass as I do and may be able to suggest some tricks and theory ideas!
Will update you soon!

Great thanks. How familiar are you with classical music forms, like sonata? I have this part of a song I have been working on and every arrangement I have tried just doesn't feel right, and today I thought about turning it into a sonata. That's very cool. When I was in high school I was not aware that you could go to school for guitar. In fact classical music and was partly the reason and inspiration for starting to play guitar again after so many years. This song below and the idea of composing a symphony somday inspired me to take up music again. I don't listen to a lot of classical music but it still fasinates me. I have the rhythm guitar and drums written for the exposition. Next time I have a chance to work on it I will post is it with some tabs or chord progressions. Hopefully I understand this section and have my modulations and things ok.

Composing symphony type songs is pretty much the se as writing any other song it's all depends on arrangement you will me to understand how the voicings and intervals work I can help you with that if you would like

Hey Alex! I would like to learn anything and everything, so this would be great. Here is my improv, although I don't think it's really improvised. smile.gif I really had to write it out and practice it. It is not perfect, and has some issues, but it really got my fingers twisted up. What kind of monitors do you use, and how does the mix sound? Just to let you know my mentoring program will be closed from January 1st so the assignment I will give you will be really simple
I would like you to compose the whole solo for the same backing track!
Start with a simple melody and develop it towards the middle and then bring it back to the melody again!
