When I was about 6-7 years old I listened to a norwegian band called D.D.E. aswell as Øystein Sunde. I can't remember how long it lasted, but probably a few months.
Around 7-9 perhaps I listened to a fantastic norwegian band called Trang Fødsel. I listened to them quite a while but eventually stopped.
Around 9-10 I listened to stuff like Bloodhound Gang, The Offspring and that sort of things, my sister and dad listened to it, that's where I got it from.
The period 10-12 me and my best friend discovered techno and trance through my friends big brother. We were absolutely obsessed with it because we thought it was so incredibly amazing. We listened to it all the time, we bought stereos and these kind of lights you see in clubs, flashing with colors and everything. We never talked about anything else. I remember I used to put on the "disco lights" and listen to music for hours. Good times, good times, even though I can't stand trance/techno today.
Around the age 12 me and all my friends started skateboarding. Of course that led to all the music on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. Lots of great music there. I specifically liked Millencolin.
Later that year the norwegian championship in skateboarding was held here in our town. They played Iron Maiden's Run to The Hills there, and after hearing it I was speechless. I instantly fell in love with it(same happened to a guy that I didn't know at the time, wich today is the drummer in my band).
12-15 = Iron Maiden. I met my drummer through another friend of mine, all of us loved Maiden so we decided to make a band. We were all heavily influenced by Iron Maiden, so the music we made was pointing in the direction of the first Maiden albums.
We also liked Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, but not nearly as much as we worshipped Iron Maiden.
15-16 = In Flames, Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom for a short time, then Opeth. Discovering Opeth was great, just great.
We started to like growling vocals and a heavier music the past year wich led to black metal at the age of 16. Discovering black metal was just a coinsidence. One of the local music shops were closing, so they had 50% off everything. The drummer of my band
just happened to buy Darkthrone's three fantastic classics: A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Under A Funeral Moon and Transilvanian Hunger,
only because he thought the album covers looked cool! We listened to A Blaze In The Northern Sky and was amazed of how different this was from everything else we had ever heard. It was pure magic!
The age 16-17 was just pure black metal all the way, maybe a little thrash and death aswell.
When I was 17, around christmas, my dad bought me some Jimi Hendrix CD's. This was what made me break out of this whole extreme metal bubble. A bit later my dad bought two Stevie Ray Vaughn albums and a Johnny Winter album. That was when I started to like blues.
From last christmas and till today I have discovered a huge amout of bands and artists, many through GMC. I think I can almost say that I like
everything. I'd love to make a list, but, dude... no way.
This broad taste of music have influenced my playing
alot in all kind of different directions.
I also started to listen to the bands that I listened to as a kid.
I think it's very important to listen to as much different things as possible or else the music you make will sound exactly the same as the style you're listening to. I know alot of people that
only listen to metal, or
only rock, or
only rap, because they don't think that it's cool to listen to other genres. I don't know how many times people have said to me: "WHAT!? Are you listening to that xxx crap??"
Break the barrier and listen to as much different music possible!
