The title says it all; just list all the different styles of music that you've listened to over the years and how they have had affects on your present tastes. Here's my musical history:

Pretty much up to the time I was eleven I had no bands that I listened to. Luckily though,(actually pretty unlucky) most of the people that I was around listened to rap and hiphop. After a year of listening to rap, I kind of got into Slipknot, Korn, and some other nu-metal bands. I soon got out of this stage, and thankfully started listening to some good music. It was around this time that I got into classic rock ( Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc) and some blues (SRV and Hindrix). This music still didn't quite meet the mark with me though, and soon I was searching for something different. That's when I picked up a Metallica CD about a year ago. I havn't looked back. While I still highly enjoy blues, classic rock, and even a little modern rock, metal has become my absolute favorite genre of music. I kind of got stuck on Metallica for a while, but I'm definitely branching out.

Well, that's it. Any one else care to share their story? smile.gif

Started with Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath, moved on to all the possible subgenres of metal, from Folk Metal to Death Metal. Ive also got into Blues, Jazz, Classical, Opera, Cultural, Instrumental and pretty much everything except country, and rap, those two just dont go with me well.

Well, when i was a kid i used to "hate" music, i always said i didnt like music everytime i asked what kind of music i liked. Then i listened to The Offspring which is a punk band, it became my favorite band and music right away, obviously. I stayed like that for quite a while, i never went on the search for more, then like 4 years ago i started to get into "Reggaeton", just cause it was what everybody listened to and what was played at parties. I even wanted to be a rapper with a friend. Then like 2 years ago (yeah that soon, makes me kinda angry sometimes) i started getting into Guns N Roses, Metallica, Megadeth, Rhapsody, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Metal, Classical music, etc. And yeah, i acquired all that in that small amount of time. And well, here i am now, with the same musical tastes and preferences as of lately, and im sticking with that because i know, that thats the good music.

I probably wouldnt have ever picked up a guitar if it wasent for Metallica ,thats how big of an impact they had on me.Honestly i still listen to the same bands i did ten years ago like Pantera,Megadeth,Alice in Chains, stuff like that .Music today just doesnt come out like it did in the 90's for me.Thrash is my biggest inspiration also other forms of rock, grunge, alterative, stuff like that.I donot care at all for rap and it never has moved me in any way musicaly.Country isnt a big one for me either however i do have respect for it and also after watching Murris country lesson i really want to mix that type of playing into my metal blink.gif biggrin.gif

I used to listen to Aqua, Vengaboys and rap like Xzibit when I was about 10 *shudders*.

Fortunately that phase went and I now listen to jazz, blues, classic rock, hard rock ... descent music.

When I was about 6-7 years old I listened to a norwegian band called D.D.E. aswell as Øystein Sunde. I can't remember how long it lasted, but probably a few months.

Around 7-9 perhaps I listened to a fantastic norwegian band called Trang Fødsel. I listened to them quite a while but eventually stopped.

Around 9-10 I listened to stuff like Bloodhound Gang, The Offspring and that sort of things, my sister and dad listened to it, that's where I got it from.

The period 10-12 me and my best friend discovered techno and trance through my friends big brother. We were absolutely obsessed with it because we thought it was so incredibly amazing. We listened to it all the time, we bought stereos and these kind of lights you see in clubs, flashing with colors and everything. We never talked about anything else. I remember I used to put on the "disco lights" and listen to music for hours. Good times, good times, even though I can't stand trance/techno today.

Around the age 12 me and all my friends started skateboarding. Of course that led to all the music on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. Lots of great music there. I specifically liked Millencolin.

Later that year the norwegian championship in skateboarding was held here in our town. They played Iron Maiden's Run to The Hills there, and after hearing it I was speechless. I instantly fell in love with it(same happened to a guy that I didn't know at the time, wich today is the drummer in my band).

12-15 = Iron Maiden. I met my drummer through another friend of mine, all of us loved Maiden so we decided to make a band. We were all heavily influenced by Iron Maiden, so the music we made was pointing in the direction of the first Maiden albums.
We also liked Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, but not nearly as much as we worshipped Iron Maiden.

15-16 = In Flames, Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom for a short time, then Opeth. Discovering Opeth was great, just great.

We started to like growling vocals and a heavier music the past year wich led to black metal at the age of 16. Discovering black metal was just a coinsidence. One of the local music shops were closing, so they had 50% off everything. The drummer of my band just happened to buy Darkthrone's three fantastic classics: A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Under A Funeral Moon and Transilvanian Hunger, only because he thought the album covers looked cool! We listened to A Blaze In The Northern Sky and was amazed of how different this was from everything else we had ever heard. It was pure magic!

The age 16-17 was just pure black metal all the way, maybe a little thrash and death aswell.

When I was 17, around christmas, my dad bought me some Jimi Hendrix CD's. This was what made me break out of this whole extreme metal bubble. A bit later my dad bought two Stevie Ray Vaughn albums and a Johnny Winter album. That was when I started to like blues.

From last christmas and till today I have discovered a huge amout of bands and artists, many through GMC. I think I can almost say that I like everything. I'd love to make a list, but, dude... no way.
This broad taste of music have influenced my playing alot in all kind of different directions.
I also started to listen to the bands that I listened to as a kid.

I think it's very important to listen to as much different things as possible or else the music you make will sound exactly the same as the style you're listening to. I know alot of people that only listen to metal, or only rock, or only rap, because they don't think that it's cool to listen to other genres. I don't know how many times people have said to me: "WHAT!? Are you listening to that xxx crap??"
Break the barrier and listen to as much different music possible!

Edit: Maybe a bit too many details that people don't care about tongue.gif sorry

At first, I only got into songs that were in movies. Thats a lot of genres if you think about it.

I got into movie scores ala Back to the Future and Indiana Jones.

I got into theme songs and songs they played in movies like "Johnny B Good" in Back to the Future, "Dont lose your way" from Land Before Time, "Fight The Power" in Do the Right thing, and pretty much the whole soundtrack to Forrest Gump.

Eventually, I found my way to liking Papa Roach, Linkin Park, ect. until one day when my guitar teacher told me to listen to the music that influenced the music I listened to. That "homework assignment" changed my life forever. I put on some Black Sabbath and thought it was from another world. I threw away the nu-metal and emo punk and made room for Zeppelin and Maiden Cd's. And now my tastes are going into two very strange directions.

On one hand, I'm really starting to dig folk music and jazz arrangements.

On the other hand, I'm really getting into mash ups, turntablism, and DJ music (ever since I saw 'Cut Chemist' perform a scratch duet with R2-D2).

Lol I'm only 16 and I've already got a pretty diverse and big musical history lol.

Age 5 to 13: My family loves country music so they played it on the radio all the time and I loved it, especially Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Brooks n' Dunn, and Garth Brooks. At one point, I could name any given country song that came on the radio at any time. Even though today my tastes in music are way different, those artists are still my favorite from the country genre, I can't stand most new country like Rascal Flatts.

Age 10 to 13: I liked country still but also listened to rap because I thought it was "cool." Listened to artists like Ludacris, Nelly, etc. However unlike country, looking back, I can say every single rap artist sucked.

Age 13: Big day. I was at a summer camp in Flat Rock, NC. We were riding back from a ski trip and Linkin Park's "Somewhere I Belong" came on the radio. Everyone in the van was screaming their head off trying to sing it and I thought it was just soooooooooooooooooooo awesome how it was so much more "free" and "open" than what I had been previously listening to. As soon as I got home a week later, I got Meteora and listened to Somewhere I Belong like 750 times, over, and over, and over, and over, and over, it was like a hobby, but I didn't listen to any other songs on the album. Then I listened to Breaking the Habit, I thought it was cool, so I listened to the rest of the album, loved it, went out and bought the rest of their albums, Hybrid Theory, Live in Texas, etc. For about a year all I did was listen to Linkin Park, that is it, I knew every song they had word for word. Then my dad noticed my new interest in "semi-rock" as he called it. So he showed me some of the stuff that he listened to as a teenager like Guns n' Roses, ACDC, KISS, Aerosmith, etc. And I thought it was awesome, so I started to like progressive rock/hair metal. This was the point when I began to notice the flashy guitar solos and dreamt about playing like Slash, Ace Frehley, etc. I also liked bands like Greenday, Shinedown, etc.

Age 14: Got a guitar for my birthday (October). Wasn't serious for about 8 months, for some reason, it was more fun to listen to music and just imagine myself playing it. After 8 months I could play a couple chords and that is it. Then I found Ultimate-Guitar.com and I was like "Wow I can learn to play any song I want to." So I just learned random intros and basic songs like American Idiot, When September Ends, Crazytrain, other 80's hair metal stuff and stuff like ACDC. Well those solos really started to make me mad because I couldn't play them so I went on quest into further guitar study. Learned some theory concepts...then got sucked into World of Warcraft and Runescape for 1.5 years. During my addiction to those games I loved to listen to Jimi Hendrix, he was one of my favorite.

Age 15, about March: I broke my MMORPG addiction and picked up the guitar again. Joined GMC, thought it was cool and all, but didn't grasp it's potential until about 2 months ago. Anyway earlier this January I heard Metallica and LOVED it. Like Somewhere I Belong two years before, I listened to Master of Puppets like 800 times non-stop. Then I listened to other stuff by them, got every single album, learned a couple of their songs. Then one day I hear about this rival band Megadeth...listen to them, forget Metallica, absolutely love Marty Friedman's style, listend to Holy Wars and Hangar 18 900 times then heard about Marty's earlier band, Cacophony. Listen to it, got sucked into the neo-classical genre, absolutely love it now. I heard about the inventor of neo-classical, Yngwie Malmsteen, listened to him, loved it. I heard about his influence, Niccolo Paganini, which is classical music, so I was a bit wary at first, but got the 24 Caprices, loved it, and thus further expanding my musical genres. Lately I've been listening to a ton of blues, jazz, classical, neo-classical, and metal...yep, thats about it. I got carried away a bit but whatever lol.

Rap? my case is even worst, I started with pop sad.gif

When I was 10 I had no idea about music, and a female friend of mine introduced me to the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys, and well, I liked it lol, don't even know why.
after that it was rap for a couple of years, than it was bands like Nickelback, Stained, Slipknot, ETC. and after that it was In Flames, Children Of Bodom, Dream Theater and Symphony X, and finally my guitar teacher back then introduced me to Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, and the rest is history smile.gif

biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

As for my musical tastes well they have always been varied. I've had my 80's glam metal phase as a kid, a hip hop phase as a teenager, and well my 20's have been a mix of everything from Frank Sinatra to Rob Zombie. About the only constants were bands like Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, GNR, Johnny Cash, The Tragically Hip and Metallica. I also had celtic music around me as a child so I've always had a love for it. Celtic punk is a new one for me though but it has quickly become a favourite.

Since I've picked up the guitar at age 28 my tastes in music have changed a bit but I think the biggest difference is how I listen to music. It's like I have new ears. I concentrate more now on the technical aspects of songs. Like the guitar techniques, or the song composition. I have a greater appreciation now for music. I'm listening to more metal and blues but also a lot of 90's alternative. It's been 2 yrs since I picked up the guitar and I've learned to love music more in that short time then in the 28 yrs prior.

I started to listen to metallica when i was like 10 years old, but the thing that convinced me to pick up the guitar was when i saw Yngwie Malmsteen on a children program called "Alrram est" it was so funny! He sat in a chair with all his jewellery, talking to a kind of crazy muppet and playing a crazy guitar solo at the same time..

these days i mostly listen to jazz and fusion, and some dream theater biggrin.gif

Yeah, it has; and to think, I don't even really like the Metallica cd that I started off with( the Black Album)
Love all of their other old stuff though.
