Some of you might hate this type of stuff. I'm actually not a Black metal fan, but this band really stands out. Their latest album is just EPIC!

Hey, I didn't notice they had a new album. I'm not a Black Metal fan either, but I really enjoy Dimmu Borgir. I like this song. I'll have to buy this CD now !

This album is a lot better than their former two albums
I like it a lot, but my favorite is still Enthrone Darkness Triumphant

yes, I agree. Latest two albums were kind of repetitive, but this one is just fun to listen to.

Havent listened to black in a long time! I agree with you, its a great album! First song I ever learned was a Dimmu song

First time I've watched the vid all the way through, I'm glad I did as I enjoyed it. I thought the blond woman was an angry Sharon Osbourne at first

I really liked Death Cult Armageddon a lot actually...

When my band played in London recently, Dimmu were playing a venue just down the road so we know where the metal heads went !!

As a fan of some of Dimmu Borgir's other albums including In Sorte Diaboli I had high hopes for this. However I'm going to have to disagree with most of the metal community and say I actually don't really like this album. I don't know what my problem with it is yet I don't know it just doesn't do it for me and I've listened to it a few times. So I'm afraid to say I'm quite disappointed with it.

I"m also not a big fan of "Black Metal" in the same way I don't usually like most "Christian Metal", I tend to like "Good Heavy Chunky Metal" Black and Christian Metal seem so tied to religious context that it's hard to separate them. They just have polar opposite choices of Deity. But Dimmu is a rare exception for me. You just gotta love this band

I love the songs I've listened to so far. I never liked Black Metal (yet) and now I wanted to try it with the new Dimmu record, but many "true" black metal fans say it is not black metal anymore (like Lian)...?

well, about what I said above, do not take me wrong.
I think you have to chose a band, a song, a melody, keeping just one question in mind: Do I like it? if yes, it doesn't matter if they are true or the worst commercial pop band in the world!
in this particular case, and talking specifically of Black Metal, there are so many points of view.
with True Black Metal, we say: bands like Mayhem, Immortal, Emperor... since they are from Scandinavia, (Norway to be precise) so, the word "True" means that they belong to the land where all it has started.
now, think about Cradle of Filth, in their beginning they really played good black metal, but they never called themselves "true" since they are from UK
now, Dimmu's last album is not Black metal, is a kind of evolution of it, with their particular trademarks and all, but they changed. this happens to all of us (not only musicians) but people.
now, to the most, all this has NO SENSE! xd! but for us, metalheads, all this details and stuff behind the music are TOO important.
and we can spent hours and days discussing about it, reading carefully lyrics, and involving into a concept, even if it just fantasy.

Not sure I completely agree with that. Black metal didn't come from Norway initially, just the Norwegian wave of black metal. And what the loyal black metalers would call true black metal I don't think has anything to do with the origin but more the sound and ideology. A lot of black metalers would call an album non-true black metal just for the production where Norwegian black metal was purposely made very unpolished and, well, to put it bluntly badly produced in all areas. Mostly so that they're music would remain underground and wouldn't appeal to a mainstream audience.

There aren't many true black metalers around these days and those who claimed to be are drifting away from it. Varg Vikernes I think remains within that mind set of doing exactly what you want to do and not thinking about what other people want. He's made this quite clear on a number of occasions. However I do think he thinks he's a bigger name then he actually is.

I do quite like a lot of black metal stuff. Gorgoroth and Immortal are probably my favourite black metal bands and I do like a lot of Emperor and early Burzum stuff. I do think the whole "kvlt black metal" stuff does get out of hand at times and one band trying to be more extreme than the next also gets a bit silly

I think you are saying that Venom or Angel witch was one of the first black metal bands so, since they are from UK, black metal did not come from Norway.
I think that could be an origin, not the movement itself. so, from my point of view, the style begins after the movement or with the movement but never before it.
I mean per example, if Heavy Metal comes from Punk, heavy metal bands started to play the style once it was created or at the same time.
now about the "true": I completely agree with you about the sound and to keep it underground, and I think I say "True" as you say Norwegian Black Metal. you surely has heard Varg or Ihsahn say: "the only true black metal comes from norway" LOL, as I said above, it has no sense!

Kind of, the name Black Metal came from Venom's album. But Bathory was also a big influence to black metal and that's Swedish as was Hellhammer who are from Switzerland. Yeah some of it is really ridiculous. I can understand it in the beginning and I do at least admire their passion for what they were doing I guess they kind of felt they made something which was theirs and theirs only. Now however I think it's a different matter and the world has definitely moved on

I'm kind of in the same position. This band just does it for me.

I know it's not the purest typical black metal such as Immortal, but that's what I like about them. They took the concept and actually evolved it successfully imo, which is not an easy thing to do with such an extreme genre.

Its often with what you put behind it. Some new "true" black metal albums here are recorded outside in the snow, specifically using lousy microphones etc. Not so they wont appeal to a mainstream audience, but you get a unique sound, rebelling against the mainstream everything-sounds-the-same-goody-two-shoes-quality, and because the ideology behind it might be more important than what others percieve as sound quality.

Gateways is really good imo, and the female vocals add even more awesomeness to the song. They have got a wicked new style going on aswell, two thumbs up
