If you're playing something that requires both hands make drastic position changes the popular crutch is to use that type of band to mute extra vibration on other strings.

Some folks will debate whether or not you should do it. I liked it when I was learning a couple of techniques because it let me hear different string noise that I was still making. Once that was eliminated, I took off the mute and worked on eliminating the rest of the string noise. Well, mostly eliminated. Certainly I still need more practice but the "this sounds completely terrible" part was over smile.gif

I haven't put the band back on yet but I've been tempted once or twice, just to hear it.

I saw someone tied a sock around the neck. That looked... cool. You can only top that with underwear!

The use them to mute unnecessary string vibration when doing some tapping/two handed techniques etc...Its a nice trick, but working on muting technique (on your own) is very important.

As everyone said, it's used in those situations where you cannot have any additional noise while tapping, like when recording. But live it can be useful as well.

hahaha biggrin.gif

I personally don't like to use the band on the neck but then again Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe use them.
