This is a thread I started to let people post there ideal practice rutine. Feel free to be as detailed as you want. I think that if we read everyone else's strategies, we'll be able to further improve our own to make our practices more effecient.

Mines pretty simple for the most part. I play whatever, mostly GMC lessons. And i just play them over and over again with the instructors, and backing tracks. Not really setting a time for it. And i just keep on going formn 1 lesson to the next both working on different techniques. BUT, when i really need to improve on something like i just found out i can play 16th note triplets really fast like 160 to 180 bpm. Well now for the past 2 days ive just been doing speed licks like non-stop and finding speed songs. And practicing them over and over again. So then in a about a month or something. Ill have some clean speed licks going on and really fast to. So to make my scedchule simple. I work on everything, until i find osmething that needs some dramatic owrk then i focus on that directly. Now you guys might think my schedule is not good, but it keeps me motivated not playing the same boring thing about a billions times for 2 weeks straight. And In doing my schedule wiht some hardcore 5 to 10 hour days for the most part. I went from playing some bush (glycerine) 3 months ago. To now currently learning and cleaning up Paul Gilbert (Scarified) In the 3 months time I think thats damn good!!

Hello everyone,
I actually am trying to improve my practice time as well.I find one key thing is fir example=if you want to learn a lesson on here dont stop playing it or switch to a new one till you have got it down.I'm not big on finger excerises that sound like crap,i feel like if your wanting to warm your finger's up you still need to play something useful.Using a metronome or a drum machine is good for practice. One of my favorite wway's to practice is to jam along with a cd.

I am currently following John Petrucci's Rock Discipline exercises and warm ups. After that I focus on sweeps and tapping after which I try, key word try, to learn a song or part of it.

I'm right in the middle between where slow stuff is easy and the solos are too fast. It's an awkward stage and it's been quite frustrating to be honest.

Wow... that sounds a lot like puberty wink.gif

Yes I've heard, but not watched.

You can find Petrucci on YouTube. Just search Rock Discipline. It's broken into 12 pieces.

So first.. i usually practice around 63 hours a day.. I have to timewarp to do it, but thats another story.
okay heres a typical summers day in the life of me. no working day
Wake ( umm when ever i like sleeping in though 10:30)
eat( small mammels, live is the best way to go about it, small mammels are great for the hands, okay theres a joke that AIB will get and maybe some other people smile.gif )
i start practice just by doing scales all the way up the fretboard simple blues scales to get my hands warm. i then start by playing segments from steve vais 1 hour workout which is very simple stuff such as 1-2-3-4 all the way down the strings and then all the way up the fretboard until im playing e as my first note again (12th fret) I then to tremilo's and tapping, simple 1 tap 4 pull of 1 or 1 tap 4 pulloff 2.
WITH A METRENOME! after i feel like ive given my left hand a work i go on and work on picking and sweeps. Speed picking is my fav cause im a rythem player in a deathmetal band ( lots of speed picking) so i basically speed pick one little riff until my right arm feels like falling off just 0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-3-0-0-0-0-4-0-0-0-0-2 as fast as possible switching it up and around of course) smile.gif
Lunch- MORE FOOD yay
Start with another couple of blues scales to get warm again and then on to the fun part. set the metronome and just jam smile.gif creative aspect, this is where riffs are created and solos begun, i just work with effects and my amp and jam around the fretbord. After this ill work on a song, weather its my bands stuff bodom, nile, blind guardian what ever ill try and learn 1 full song ( not that ill remember it ) Then i take a GMC break YAY. post on the fourms go on chat look at a few lessions, all that jazz. Then i will search for stuff to practice online. sry gmc although there are great lessions here i still enjoy pracitcing lessions by my favorite guitarists (vai, jon, satch, Opeth, petrucci are what im liken right now AIB showed them to me)

From here i do what ever, look up guitars, play keys, play bass, play drums or whatever tickles my fancy, if im not done with guitar yet ill keep practicing little things like stretches and scales and riffs and hand exersizes or picking exersizes. If i am done Guitarin for the day ill usually go play sum guitar hero II or just go wander and be a creature of darkness.

Hope that gives you a little insight into my practise day, its not really detailed into what i practice and i know its very crude but for me i find it effective. All my little breaks are filled with listening to music or talkin to ppl bout music. IT NEVER ENDS. on working days i concentrate on exersizes for increasing stamina ( playing a 5 songs set straight really hurts! ( new discovery smile.gif )

My basic practice day is just waking up, grabbing the guitar, fooling around a bit untill I feel comfortabtle, then some metronome practice for like at least 30 mins, then I take a break and try to play some song or whatever, after a while I'll do some more metronome stuff, then I just fool around and improvise, and some more metronome etc. And every time I get tired in my hands I just turon on an episode of futurama, and after that I'm fit for more practicing biggrin.gif So it's not very organized, but it works for me.. rolleyes.gif

well. im 14 so i have school. i practice technique 5 hours a day. and i start with a half hour warm up (from rock discipline) string skipping streches etc. then i go on to a chromatic exercise for an hour or so (also rock discipline), move on to some three finger excercises 45 minutes each exercise ( speed kills ) i have 3. then some sweep\ economy picking for an hour. and legato for about 15 minutes.

thats about it for techinique. i usually improvise/learn something new/ practice some solo for half an hour. and another half an hour theory practice: memorizing the scales, major scales and their relative minor scales, chord structures , stuff like that.

smikey: that was on youtube...

I dont have a practice rutine/schedule. I try to practice every day, all day, or 3 hours minimum. I try to practice a technique wich a wanna learn/master etc. Sometimes i learn songs which is very fun, and Some very cool solos to incorporate into my playing.

I dont have a schedule really. Recently I have been making alot of songs, some of them I find very hard. And I need to practice them alot so I can record them. I also practice on Rude Mood by SRV atm, and some rather simple sweeping patterns I've made myself. And of course I improvise alot smile.gif
But other times I only practice GMC lessons. Sort of depends.
