Hi All,

The main reason I started to love the guitar is because of a Xbox game called Guitar Hero . I was so amused with this game that I told my girl I would love to learn to play the guitar in real life. My girl remembered that and gave me my first guitar for my Birthday. So that's the reason I picked up the guitar.


I am curious to hear for what reason you started to learn how to play the guitar? Is it some cool song you heard or are you a big fan of somebody? Have you met your goals yet? Which mistakes did you made when starting?(please be specific) and what is the coolest thing you can do on the guitar?


Please let me hear your whole story.

The love for music!
I was listening to all kind of music 5-6 hours every day and I felt very bad if I couldn't listen to music at least several hours. And then one day the idea struck me. "What is better than listening to music?... Making music!" The next day I took a friend's crappy acoustic and that's how it started :]
I've always wanted to play Piano too. And Violin. And Mandolin. And soon I'll start with the piano because I'm pretty close with the money :]

i loved the persona of being a guitarist so i bought a squire, but once I listened to Jimmy Page i decided to play for the sake of fun and bought a cheap gibson!

I just took my uncles old 25 year old nylon string guitar 9 years ago because I was bored and didn't have anything to do that day, and didn't stop playing ever since.

HI, I´m Lian, i started to play guitar when i was 15, in that time i was studing piano for 4 years . but when i played piano in my first band i feel that the piano was a little bit boring, so i pick up the guitar and i started to study very hard.

Was always hugely into music as a kid, and listened to a ton of different stuff. But what made me want to actually play was watching Slash in the video for Welcome to the Jungle.

I've got a really interesting guitar journey.

I was hearing this song "Snow Hey Oh" by RHCP all the time on the radio, but had no idea how to song was called. One day, a friend of mine started singing "Paradise City" by GNR near me, and as I music newb, I thought it was "Snow Hey Oh".

So I asked how was the song called. He replied "Paradise City". So this is what I watched when I came home:

Quite interestingly, it wasn't Slash that made me love that video. It was their rhythm guitarist Gilby Clarke who I enjoyed the most.

Then I kept on watching more GNR videos from Youtube like "Sweet Child of Mine" and such. All the people in the comments were talking about some Slash and how great he was. I didn't know who that was. So I googled him and found out he used to be the lead guitarist for GNR.

As a music newb, I thought that when you got some sheet music and 10 different guitarists, they all will play it the same way. My dad used to be a guitarist, so I asked him if that's the case. He said "no". That really interested me. I couldn't understand how can one note be played in 10 differents ways.

So I picked up the guitar.

I heard Metallica some time around 1990 i think, was 11 then, and i knew instantly that i wanted to play what i heard

I came on this site and saw how Kris and all you others were playing, and i was like "WOW" i wanna learn that too! my friend agreed, he is getting a guitar soon, So, i wanna get better than him ! hah a:D

I wanted to learn how to play All Apologies by Nirvana, so that's why I finally got my guitar. But, the main infliences to pick up the guitar must have been Opeth and Mikael Åkerfeldt and In Flames (yes, their old stuff is amazing whatever you say:o) and Jesper Strömblad.

I wanted to play the main riffs from Bleak and Artifacts of the Black rain so much, but I thought it was super hard. After jhalf a year I could play both of them.

So yeah, Kurt Kobain, Mikael Åkerfeldt and Jesper Strömblad.

A couple things made me start the guitar.

My friend and his dad played, and I wanted to jam with them so much that I picked up the guitar.

And Angus Young was another big influence

Christmas of 83', I was 10 and got Metallica's Kill Em All cassette tape. Yea tape. I new then that one day I was going to learn those songs on guitar. Unfortunately, it took me til this past year to start. Guess what the first song was I learned? Seek and Destroy.

Then I found Freelicks.net and learned Fade to Black from a guy named Kristopher Dahl. Brought me here and I love it!

Almost everyone in my family plays guitar, so I grew up around guitars. Didn't really start untill I was 13

After I saw some of my buddies play. I wanted to jump on the bandwagon and learn too.

Pretty cool to see most of you where inspired by music.

I would had expected more like: "My mom stressed me to take lessons when I was a kid" or "My daddy plays in a rockband and so most I" etc etc

pretty much when i was just listening to my music, i suddenly had this idea for me to play an instrument(i was actually leaning towards drums, because i got a perfect score on my rythm test at school)but i realized i couldnt afford drums so i went with guitar.

well actually i started playing guitar when i was about nine but found i was too lazy and uninspired to keep practicing. then after a few years passed i went to my uncle's house and he and his friends were jamming out and they asked if i wanted to learn a song. i said sure and my uncle then taught me to play the intro to "wish you were here" by pink floyd and i ended up learning it very quickly and i was impressed with myself. then he taught me some really simple powerchords and before i knew it was jamming along with the rest of them. it felt so good playing with them and just jamming out i've wanted nothing more than to get better and do it again and again and i've been playing guitar ever since.
