O yeah, that video is Steve Vai competition, not Eric Johson. This post has been edited by Ryan: Sep 17 2007, 07:38 AM -------------------- “Obey the principles without being bound by them.”

Circle picking refers to the motion of the pick relative to a single string. When I pick a string the plectrum moves in a straight line back and forth. In circle picking it should go through a little circle centered on the string. Circle picking is supposed to be faster then 'normal' picking can't say if it is though as it's not a technique I've ever tried.

When I think about it, I've used this technique for a while already, when speedpicking. Depends a little on what I play. I didnt think about it untill now.

It looks just like Alternate Picking!! Its pretty much the same, just that you move the pick a little back and forth. Thats how I understood it atleast |

Eric tried to explain playing from the thumb instead from the wrist.
It's still regular alternate picking without moving whole hand a lot over bridge. I prefer from the wrist tho. Oh,and yes,I haven't seen Eric plays this "circle" stuff much often either. -------------------- Youtube

I just noticed i use this Techinque naturally. I thought everybody did it like this. I use my thumb instead of my wrist. I just cant control the wrist, but damn. Tahts pretty cool i use teh Circle Technqiue. But then again i better start workign on using my wrist 2. I think anyways. I mean i look. and im using my thumb moving it back and forth, but when going up and down the string my wrist moves. Nothign like pavels htough. But yeah im pretty sure i use the circle techinque. If i do. then i must admit, You have more control over things. I believe I do, cus what i just tried doing, was I held my wrist with my left hand, and then i picked normally, and it made no differecne, if my wrist was locked down from moving, i cousl still pick the exact same. Hmm Yeah, many use it instead of playing from wrist. Just take what you feel most comfortable with, and that's it. -------------------- Youtube

Am i missing out on anything? Think so,yeah It's impossible to play many rhythm chops with moving only from thumb, same with skipping as you said. Try to focus on wrist from now,and use thumb just a bit here and there,my suggestion. -------------------- Youtube
