Evolution Of A Song

Hey guys, One of my first posts here I had posted a song idea that, as it was, I didn't care for that much, but felt the parts had potential. It was too poppy for my liking and I was searching for ideas. This is the first version of that song idea I posted months ago: OLD VERSION: https://soundcloud.com/lllspocklll/song-1-old Anyway, I reworked some parts and have since gotten with a keyboardist that helped me update the tune to this current version which is much more to my personal liking. Also have a vocalist working on vocal harmony and I can't wait to hear what he comes up with. I listened to the old version for the first time in a long time and was amazed at the evolution, so I thought I would share. To be honest, even this newer version is slightly dated in that this was used to make the final synth part, but it's pretty close. I think you should focus on becoming better and better as a riffer and song writer, because what you do is very good - I don't know if you ever saw that video in which Steve Vai said that it's always good to focus on what you are good at and develop those skills sky high, without being frustrated by the fact that you can't do other things on your instrument. About the solo - I think that you should regard it as a vocal line and try to follow the chord changes a bit more as at this point it seems a bit static. Congrats my friend! And I can't complain at all about being similar to that genre, I'm sort of going for an industrial spooky feel. If I had to draw conclusions overall, I'd kind of say, A Perfect Circle meets Rush meets Tool, which is sort of my overall mental blend. Some of those keys are actually tones I dialed in on the Line 6 HD500 and played guitar on, but then the keyboardist understood the direction and took off with it. That little 3 note spooky harmony guitar part at the end are now synth notes instead. @ Cosmin - Thanks so much for your valued input and critique! I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "riffs" other then I guess the rhythm parts? I hope to get better at leads as I am new to writing my own. And my overall plan is to eventually utilize this site and your instruction more the way it is meant to be. Right now I've been preoccupied with not only my neck problem, but also with writing originals and getting everyone on the same page as far as direction. I have the over-compulsive desire to have 6 originals so we can start playing live, opening for local acts. Once that goal has been met then I can settle down and really concentrate on the fundamentals you are teaching me. @ Vonter I just purchased Guitar Pro and need to brush up on a tutorial but the solo shouldn't be difficult to tab out once I understand the program a bit more, it being mostly bends. When I was writing that, I pieced each part together in my head and picked out what I was hearing in there. On that run, I knew I wanted it to sound that way and I knew I had heard that run before somewhere - then it dawned on me, it is a run in the solo to Love Gun by KISS, played in a different position. Mate, if your songs sound like this one, I think you have fair chances of getting your band noticed I am here and ready to help once you have the time. We can take on lead playing so that you will balance the boat a bit, eh? When I say riffs - I mean rhythm oriented playing, indeed, but a good rhythm player, has a solid base for understanding lead! Speaking of bands getting noticed, my old drummer's band is making some major waves in the area. They just released a 5 song EP produced by the guy that produced Shinedown. Here's a video of theirs, this is not my favorite song by them, however it is a good one. The drummer's brother (an awesome guitarist and our former band mate too) is my best friend and is the guy that I am now working with and is playing drums with me - we practiced all day yesterday. Anyway - Kelen Heller isn't doing anything hard at all, but write some damn catchy songs. They've opened a few shows for Guns and Roses and played with 7 Dust as well.
